So this is the first of a mini series of basic information about many different ciphers that may or may not be used in the journal. As you guys know, this cipher is used to decode Blendin's letter. Before I get onto how to use the cipher, I've got a little bit of information about it.

In my experience, the Vigenere Cipher is the most complex code type. Named after Blaise de Vigenère, this complex mode of encryption was born in the 16th century. This cipher is really just a variant of the Caesar Cipher (see Caesar 101). A keyword is needed when cracking this code.

Now, how to use it. Here is the decoder-

Step 1-Go to the very top row, moving to the first letter of the keyword

Step 1-
Go to the very top row, moving to the first letter of the keyword.

Step 2-
Move down from that letter until you hit the first letter of the cryptogram.

Step 3-
Look to the leftmost column. This is the decoded letter.

Hopefully that's explained well enough. I've never been great at teaching things to people..  Anyways, I'll be decoding some more journal pages sometime today. Later, GreyJay13.
