~Chapter One - The Sealing of Fate~

Fifteen Years Later…

******RAINE’S POV******

“Raine, honey, can you run to the grocery store and pick up some eggs and milk?” The high-pitched voice of my mother broke me out of my reverie, and I spun around to look at the cream door of my room.

My mother stood leaning against the doorframe, wearing a pair of crisp, white three-quarter pants and a sky-blue turtleneck. Her short auburn hair was tied back at the nape of her neck into a short, stubby ponytail, and her youthful, unblemished face was free of any makeup.

I put down the t-shirt I was currently folding and nodded. “Oh, um, yeah. I need to drop into the library anyway and get another book.”

She smiled. “Already? You just borrowed four books on Tuesday.”

I laughed. “Never underestimate my reading abilities, Mother."

She handed me a twenty. “Okay, well, go. Be back for dinner, okay? We’re having lasagna and Greek salad, so you don’t wanna miss out.”

I leant forward and kissed her soft cheek. “I’ll be back in an hour or two, Mom. Don’t worry."

She smiled and brushed my hair back. “Okay, hon. Hurry back.”

I picked up my satchel bag and swung it over my shoulder, before brushing my curly brown hair off my shoulder and checking my reflection in the mirror one last time.

I wasn’t popular by any means, but I still wanted to look nice for whatever I might face.

“Hey, before you leave, I’ve been meaning to ask you,” my mother said, running slowly behind me.

I turned around with a raised eyebrow. “Yeah?”

“Did you call that boy back who asked for you earlier? He was cute.

“He’s a jock, Mom. I don’t do jocks.”

“When that nice young man asked you out a couple of weeks ago, you turned him down, too, because—and I quote—‘You don’t do rich boys, either.”

I shrugged. “I’ll know when my right type comes along.”

She gave me a worrisome look. “I worry for you, Raine. You never show any interest in boys… ever. It’s always books and studies.”

“Don’t worry, Mom. Nothing’s wrong, and I know plenty of girls like that. I just haven’t found a boy yet who isn’t a complete douchebag and also isn’t an astronomy geek. Don’t worry about it.”

She smiled, and sighed dramatically. “Alright, fine. I suppose it’s better than you liking too many boys.”

“Can I leave now?” I asked, hesitating in my front doorway.

She waved me off. “Go ahead. Have fun at the library!”

Like the true loser I was, I called over my shoulder, “I always do!"

“I love you,” she told me as I opened the car door.

I looked up at my mom with a genuine smile. “Love you, too, Mom."

I hopped in the familiar black car and started it, driving out of the parking lot and reversing out. I gave Mom a wave as I accelerated down the street, until she was out of sight.

Little did I know that may be the last time I ever saw my mother.

As I drove my phone began to ring, and I saw it was my best friend, Daisy.

I rejected the call as I was all about driver safety.

Little did I know that that may very well be the last opportunity I would ever get to speak to my best friend.

As I drove by, tapping the beat of the song I was listening to on the steering wheel, so many things passed me by that I would never get a second chance to look at—maybe ever again.

I pulled into the crowded mall parking-lot and found a spot, driving in easily and shutting off the engine, retrieving the key from the ignition.

I hopped out and looked around.

As I made my way into the mall, and the electric doors closed behind me, I looked around.

At the time, I never realized that the sound of those doors closing could very well be the sound of my life being sealed off, almost as if by fate.
