The school day had come and gone and Kassidy dreaded going home. Her father was always either drunk as a skunk, or high as a kite. Whether drunk or high, he was still very abusive. Kassidy approached the house with fear and dread.

It looked like a haunted house. The neighborhood kids were scared of the place. They heard screams, crying, and loud noises coming from the inside that house. They thought that house was haunted by ghosts! But, it wasn't haunted by ghosts, it was haunted by nightmares, abuse, and tears of fear...As she opened the front door her heart raced, it felted like her poor heart would just give out and stop beating.

The house was totally quiet, the only thing she could hear was the sound of her own feet walking across the floor. Maybe he isn't home... Kassidy checked every room in the house to make sure she was in no danger and then walked to the kitchen to check there.

She peeked her head into the room to find no one in sight. she sighed in relief, so she was safe, at least for now... She slowly walked over to the cupboard, opened it up and took out a box of crackers.

He'll never miss these... she thought as she poured crackers out onto the table. she didn't use dishes because he had sold those years ago, but even before, she didn't use dishes because she was afraid of him finding out she had eaten food, that was only his and his only to eat. They hardly had anything in there house anymore because he sold just about everything they owned to buy himself drugs and alcohol. Even their own furniture and beds.

When Kassidy wasn't working she would do homework and wait for her father to come in, if he even did come home. She didn't get to eat at school today, Kayla pushed past Kassidy in the lunchroom, making her drop the tray in the process. Kassidy sometimes wondered if anyone even cared if she lived or died, and honestly, she was starting to think the world wouldn't be much different if she died.

The only one that would even care would be Dawn...But, one day she too, would forget Kassidy even existed. Kassidy's life wasn't as happy as her classmates' lives. She had the only source of income between her and her father. Everyone knew he was a druggie and alcoholic.

Everyone knew he wouldn't work anyway, so, every job he applied for, his application was immediately trashed. Kassidy's income wasn't great she worked part-time 3 days and full time every weekend just trying to earn enough to pay the bills and keep dad happy.

Sometimes he would find the money she had been saving up to use on bills to buy hundreds of pounds of drugs. She sometimes saved enough to get an occasional nice breakfast while walking to school. The only time she ate, other than school, was when someone messed up on an order at work. Kassidy worked at a very popular Italian eatery called "Silent Garden."

Many of the the popular kids worked there. Including a brunette beauty named Bella who despised how Kayla and her boyfriend treated people, especially Kassidy, on more than one occasion, Bella stood up for her while she coward in the corner.

Kassidy respected Bella. But, they didn't have any classes together this year... Bella also didn't like how their boss, Patty, the owner and manager of "Silent Garden," treated Kassidy. Kassidy was glad she had someone at school and work to stand up for her.

She didn't have that at home and she never would. Kassidy had finished off the last of her crackers and picked up the box to put it away when the door slammed. She hurried to put the box away before he caught her. She could hear her father foot steps coming closer... Suddenly, the stench of alcohol filled the air. She slowly turned around to see her father standing in the door way, beer in hand.

"Eating my food again, huh?" Kassidy's heart stood still... she hoped he wouldn't beat her... again. "You been told thousands of time... you eat at school..." "Yes... I know dad...but," I've warned you too many times! It's time you learn to listen to me!" "Dad, I know you don't have to..." "YES, I DO! BECAUSE YOU KNOW BETTER!"He grabbed her by the arms shaking her violently, as he screamed in her face.
