Chapter Nine:

"You're finished for the day."

The words I have been wanting to hear for the last hour.

"Tomorrow, Tristan will be in and you'll be workin' with him as well," Billy continues. "It's a busy day tomorrow, so no booze for you tonight."

My eyes narrow. "Don't tell me what to do; I can drink all I want and no one is to tell me otherwise. I'll be here tomorrow, same time, so don't worry your balding head."

He stares back at me with an unreadable expression. Deciding not to press me any further, he grumbles a goodbye at Cole before walking through the back exit.

"I'm meeting my girl at McDonalds for dinner, you wanna come?" Cole walks up beside me, his phone in his hand.

"You askin' me out on a date with you and your chica?"

He gives me an over exaggerated eye roll.

"Not a date, idiot." Cole mumbles. "I'm going to Macca's for dinner, my girl so happens to be waiting there for me, and seeing as you haven't eaten since lunch, I'm being a friendly work mate and asking if you wanna come with me." Quickly, he adds, "a yes or no answer would be great."

I ignore his impatience. "Doesn't Ariella work there?"

He shrugs. "Yeah, but I think she has tonight off because she's working at the Supermarket."

I hope he's right.

"Let's go then."

I follow Cole as he walks to the front of the bar, where a DJ is setting up his gear and customers begin to mingle around the tables. An older woman in a black strapless dress briefly catches my eye; I send her a secret wink as she begins to sway to a low tempo beat. Instantly, she pushes her breasts forward, a silent invitation.

Women are just too easy in this town.

I quickly step outside before she can decide to stagger over towards me in her hot pink Pumps.

Cole chuckles beside me as we walk towards Macca's.

"I love to admire a good lookin' girl, but you take it to a whole new level my friend."

"If a girl's got a hot body, I'm goin' to look," I respond apathetically.

"Ever come across a gal who doesn't appreciate you ogling her boobs?"

"Can't say that I have." I smirk boastfully.

"And I thought I had a huge ego..."

A kid on a plastic scooter rolls past us, and so I let the conversation end. The roughly 12 foot tall McDonalds sign flashes yellow in the distance as the sun begins to set.

"So,  you ever goin' to tell me your name?" Cole breaks the silence.

"Kade."

"Kade No-Last-Name," he drones, "interesting."

We finally step through the double doors, and my eyes instantly find the front counter. I expect to see Ariella standing behind the cash register, her Macca's cap hiding her fiery hair. I mentally kick myself at the thought.

"There's my girl." Cole suddenly points to a booth facing the back window. "You go order, I'll get in line in a sec."

He scurries off before I have time to respond. I watch as he lifts a short girl into his arms; people watch them curiously from their seats, but Cole doesn't seem to notice. As I get in line to order, Cole kisses his girl on the cheek and then sits down at their booth; his girlfriend now in my line of vision. With her coal black hair casacading down her torso in slender curls and the light olive tone of her skin, I notice that she's the type of girl I would hook up with without a second thought.
