Previously, in Chapter 45:

A couple hours later we put Sam to bed and I show Daryl the bedroom he can have. He sets his stuff down beside the dresser. It's the first time we've been alone since he got here.

I stand awkwardly in the doorway. Not wanting to leave him but wanting to give him space because I know he's tired.

"I didn't know it was you," he murmurs.

I stare at him, confused. "What do you mean?"

"When I shot you, I didn't know. Your hair and your make-up was different. I didn't recognize you at all. And you were with that guy, and I saw the way you looked at him. I've never seen you look at anyone like that," he explains.

"Is that why you saved Luke? Is that why you brought him to the hospital too?" I ask.

He doesn't say anything for a moment. "Do you love him?"

"No."

"You looked at him like you did so I saved him. I didn't want to come back and ruin that for you, but I had to see my son." He takes a step closer to me. I can see the lines on his lips. The whiskers on his face.

"Well, I don't love him so you didn't ruin anything. You fixed everything by coming back," I whisper.

He looks up at the ceiling and then back at me. "I, uh, I need to thank you for taking care of Sam. He's not your responsibility so thank you."

I laugh nervously. He's so close to me. I forget how to breathe. "I tried to dump him off a few times but he always found me."

He smiles and then his face becomes serious. "Macy, there's something I gotta say."

My heart stops. "Okay, then."

He looks nervous. I don't think I've ever seen him nervous before. "I was gone for a long time and I had a lot of time to think," he pauses, his eyes locking onto mine. "I missed you every second I was gone. I missed you more than I ever thought I would, and," he pauses again as he takes a deep breath, "and I want to try with you. I'm done pretendin' like I don't have feelings for you."

It takes me a moment to process what he's saying. I replay his words over and over again in my head. I still don't think I heard him right. I can't think of anything to say. I don't know how to respond.

He kisses me. Presses his lips softly against mine. I expect it to be one of those kisses that takes my breath away, but it's the complete opposite. Instead of taking, it breathes life back into me. Fills my lungs with every single breath of air I've ever lost.

My world starts spinning when he cups my jaw with his hand. I feel weightless. Like I'm floating higher and higher. Like I'm on some sort of drug.

I'm dreaming. This is all too good to be true so I must be dreaming.

I pull away, opening my eyes. He's still in front of me. His pale eyes are wide as he stares at me with a look in his eyes I've never seen before. We don't say anything. The only sound is our breathing.

"You kissed me," I murmur.

He smirks. "Glad you noticed."

"So by try, you mean you want a relationship with me?" I question.

He nods. "If that's what you want."

"It's all I've ever wanted," I say.
