Lovely was back in her box. Her left arm was aching from where the guard had shot her. Lovely looked down at the spot, which was nothing more than a bruise.

She was still wearing the pretty red dress from before, but it was ripped where the experimentalist had grabbed her. Lovely wrapped her arms around her knees and huddled in the corner.

Lovely didn’t know how long she sat in her box. The experimentalists didn’t bother to feed her- she didn’t need food- and only came in once to attach electrodes and IVs to various body parts. Lovely didn’t care if they forgot about her entirely. Lovely was through with life.

The titanium door flew open with a bang and the brown haired experimentalist stormed in. his usually impassive face was full of rage and Lovely was grateful that she could not hear what he was shouting at her. Lovely starred at him during his tirade and only when he paused for breath did she shake her head, he forgotten that he remodeled her box after the museum incident.

He starred at her with mild confusion and rage written across his face. When it finally dawned on him, he opened her box.

Lovely crawled out and stood, her eyes meeting his. Standing was made difficult; however, by the many wires and tubes running from her body. Lovely stood silently as her looked her over.

“You tried to escape.”

It was not a question, but she answered it as such, “Yes.”

“It did not go well.”

Lovely flushed which with her meant that her entire white face turned a dark blue. She was ashamed that she was unable to defeat an experimentalist and a human guard. She could understand loosing to one of her own kind, but a human? Unforgivable.

Lovely nodded and he continued, “We have decided to proceed with our experiment, albeit more cautiously. You will be under 24-7 surveillance and have stunner chips implanted in your arm. Other than that everything will proceed according to plan.”

“A plan that I do not know and probably should given that it requires my cooperation.”

“Not necessarily, and at any rate why should I tell you anything? Especially given what just happened. Just think how the populous would react to an alien among them.”

Then it dawned on Lovely, “I’m not the only one you’ve sent out.”

He smiled, “Yes, but you will be the first humanoid.”

Lovely lowered her gaze and began pacing the room. “You’ve even developed human habits and tendencies. You should have no problem blending in.”

This time Lovely smiled. It was not an angelic smile one would expect from something as pretty as Lovely; it was however demonic and seductive. “What if I accidentally forget to act like a human?”

He sighed, clearly unimpressed with her façade. “That depends.”

“On what does it depend?” she asked.

“It depends on what you do: if you try to escape then you will most likely be killed and brought back here for an autopsy. If it is something less severe you will be stunned and returned here for rehabilitation.”

“Rehabilitation?”

“Yes.”

“Alright then. What must I do?” asked Lovely.

Lovely spent the next few days taking lessons from a number of experimentalists. She found them tedious and a waste of time, but no matter how much she insisted her teachers droned on about useless human history, mathematics and the like.

Finally Lovely was allowed outside of the lad facility. As the doors slid opened she shielded her eyes from the glare of sunlight. Lovely took deep breathes of fresh air, savoring the scents of freshness under laid by the smells of car exhausts.

“Welcome to Philadelphia’s suburbs. Do you like them?” said the brown haired experimentalist.

“Polluted.” muttered Lovely.

“Excuse me?”

“The air,” said Lovely, turning to face him, “It’s polluted- unclean.”

“We are working on that,” he said grimacing, “But how do you like it?”

“I can survive here; if that’s what you’re asking.”

“Perfect. You’ll be living here until I see fit to bring you back.”

“I get to leave now?”

“No. But soon enough.” He turned the man guarding Lovely, “Bring it back inside when it’s ready.”

As the experimentalist walked away, Lovely took one last look at the suburban Philadelphia, drinking in everything she saw. Lovely subconsciously categorized it all. Turning to the guard she pointed to the door and began walking back.

Before the doors closed on her she took one last look at what would soon be her habitat. Sighing she shook her head and continued back to her room.

When they reached the door the guard removed his helmet and looked down at Lovely. He opened his mouth as if wanting to speek, then closed it again.

“You can talk to me ,you know that.” Lovely looked back at him taking in the microscopic beads of sweat on his forehead and the slight stubble on his chin.

“No.” he said, then closed Lovely’s door.

Resting her head against the cool metal, Lovely began to whisper to the man who had doubtless stayed outside her door. She began by telling him her name and continued with how she’d met Mercy- Grace.
