What is the astral plane?

This idea goes all the way back to Plato and Aristotle, who reasoned that there is a quintessence or fifth element of nature that is above earth, fire, air, and water. This fifth element became a mysterious or astral thing, which is defined as coming from the stars. Remember that the ancients believed that the stars were on a celestial sphere or spheres where the stars and planets roamed. This astral plane of existence became the realm of angels, spirits or other supernatural beings because they needed an out-of-world place to exist.

The astral plane has become popular because of the idea of astral projection and travel, which involves out-of-body experiences. The only way that this can happen is if ones astral body is separate from ones physical body. This sounds like a soul to me, and to a lot of people, that's what it is.

The ancients believed that our astral body exists in between Heaven and Earth in a world of light that's connected to the sphere of the stars and planets. In other words, it's an intermediate body. What's so strange about this is that even Paul, the apostle, thought that there was an astral plane, and that Jesus went there. This is because the ancient world believed in mysticism, a way to deal with transcendental or spiritual phenomenon. In other words, a mystic is one who deals or manipulates the hidden world, which the astral plane is part of.

A person who wants to astral project must separate his or her astral body from their physical body. As you could imagine, this isn't easy. It involves mediation and entering a hypnotic state and using the mind to separate the soul form the body. Supposedly, your soul or astral body is linked to your physical body by means of a silver cord, an invisible force that gives one a way back for your soul to find your body. This silver cord must not be broken or bad things will happen.

As it turns out there are several web sites that are dedicated to showing people how to astral project, but some people warn that there are dangers involved in doing this. However, it is known that it's much harder to make your soul project than it is to return to your body. You body will return at the first signs of trouble, so your astral body won't get hurt. Also, your body won't get possessed while your soul is out roaming in the astral plane. You should avoid dark sprits while astral traveling. They're evil. Some could be demons, so avoid them. The bottom line is that you can't die while you off in astral land. Remember that astral projection is no more dangerous than sleeping.

Some of the supposed benefits of astral projection include healing, especially healing spiritual problems. The most obvious benefit is having spiritual peace and exploring new vistas of consciousness. Because your astral body or soul can go just about anywhere, you don't have to worry about time or distance.

I'm not sure this astral projection idea is legitimate, but there seems to be a lot of web sites devoted to the practice. So, I say 'what ever turns you on.' What the heck! You might even have fun.
