Selfless (1)

All freshmen and transferees may proceed to the Audio Visual Room now. Please refer to your school map or approach student ushers.

Drew’s voice kept booming inside the gymnasium.

Yup, he’s the one speaking through those loud speakers. Ang aga niya kasing pumasok. Ayan tuloy, na-assign siya ng teachers na magsalita for the incoming freshmen and transferees.

At dahil isa din akong early bird, na-assign din akong mag-usher. May uniform pa nga e.

Marami-rami na ding lumalapit sa ‘kin kung sa’n daw ang Audio Visual Room.

“Ate...” says this girl in braids while looking at my improvised nameplate pinned on my polo shirt. “…Paige?”

“Yes, may I help you?” I said and then smiled politely. She seems to be a freshman.

“Saan po yung Audio Visual Room?” She shyly asked.

“Freshman?”

“Opo.”

“Ah. You see that first door there?” I started pointing at the pure white door. The girl just nodded. “That’s the AVR. Ask mo na lang yung mga teachers doon for accompaniment sa loob. May table dun next to the door, you can ask them for assistance.”

“But I’m looking po for the Audio Visual Room.” She said confusingly.

“Ah. AVR is for Audio Visual Room, dear. Abbreviation.”

“Oh.” She chuckled. “Thank you po, Ate Paige. Newbie eh.”

“No worries. Pleasure to help. Have a fun school year!” I cheerfully said, and then the girl ran off.

Nakakamiss tuloy maging gano’n nung first year pa ‘ko – approaching students dahil ‘di mo masyado ma-gets yung school map. And now, sophomore na ako.

“Umm, Paige?” Said a boy who was wearing a plain white shirt and jeans. His eyes were gray. Wow, gray eyes. First time I’ve ever seen in my whole life.

Before I’ve gone daydreaming about those eyes, I politely said again and smiled, “Yes, may I help you?”

“Yes, you may. I’m a bit lost. Do you know where’s the Audio Visual Room?”

Wow, English-speaking si Kuya.

“You’re a transferee, I guess?”

“Yup.”

“Do you see that first white door?” I said as I pointed it again.

“Of course, I’m not even blind.”

Pilosopo. Turn off. Ganda pa naman nung eyes. Sayang. But then, I controlled my temper. Pikon din kasi ako.

I offered him my most polite smile with matching sarcasm and said, “That’s the AVR.”

But then he tried to ask, “Pa’no naging AVR yun?”

Shems. Akala ko mano-nosebleed ako kay Kuya, nagta-Tagalog pala!

“Abbreviation.” I said calmly.

“How come?” Inosenteng pasabi niya.

Ugh. Nakakaubos ng pasensya ha. He seems to be enjoying his own little “show.” What the.

“Siguro, wala kang common sense.” I said bluntly. Nakakainis na kaya.

“I’ll report this to your Guidance Counselor. I didn’t know such students like you have to be so rude. What a shame to Einstein Academy.”

I was about to open my mouth to say something but then he walked away. Gah! Nakakainis.

I heard him singing some lines from a song loudly, “Why you gotta be so ruuude? Don’t you know I’m human, too?” Then he chuckled.

What a freak! I hope he’ll have some fun school year!

It’s about 8:00 in the morning na din. Almost time na for the general orientation (freshmen and tranferees oriented).

Same speeches and talks pa din sa orientation. Wala pa din nagbago. Puro rules and regulations, what-to-do and what’s-not-to-do and etc.

“The list of the students for each section are in the Info Board. Be back by tomorrow morning, 7:00. Regular schedule na tayo, starting tomorrow.” And then everyone grunted. Maaga na naman kasing gigising.

Pero buti maaga nang kaming na-dismiss ngayon. Yipee!

“Yo.” Called Drew.

“Bro. McDonald’s tayo please. I’m soooo hungry!” I said, clutching on my stomach.

“Okay.”

I was about to pull Drew away from the crowd but then the speaker announced…

“Student ushers, the Guidance Counselor wants to talk to you. Especially Ms. Paige Lopez.”

NOOOOOO. I’m freaking hungry and that stupid boy would butt in. Freak. Nagsumbong talaga. So childish. Major turn off. Ugh.

“Bakit ka pinatawag?” Asked Drew.

“Talk to you later. Wait mo na lang ako pleaaase?”

“Sure. Maaga pa naman e. Sa guardhouse na lang kita hintayin?”

“Okaaay. Thanks, bro.”

He walked away na as I walk my way to the counselor’s office.

I’m. so. freaking. dead.
