“Mother, I’m fine.” I said to her when she started spouting off about hearing I was in the accident. “I wasn’t in the accident.”

“Then why on Earth are you in the hospital?” Her posh voice came through the speaker.

“Because Mother, my mate was in the accident and she needed medical attention.” I explained, waiting to hear the bout of questions she was ready to spout off.

“Your,” Mother began and stopped for a moment. “Your mate?”

“Yes, Mother. My Mate. She’s beautiful, Mother. And you will never guess who her mother is, Claire from the Farmers Faction.” I said to her with a hint of excitement in my voice.

“I just, I thought I had more time with you.” Mother choked and she began crying. “Your mate is just going to take you away from me, and I love you my baby.”

“Mother, I’m 19 years old. I haven’t been a baby in a very long time.” I chuckled looking in on my mate and her family. “Plus, I’m lucky. Shes a great girl, I can already tell.”

“I thought Claire had two sons?” Mother said to me.

“Nope, one boy and one girl. But I think we’re going to spend some time here in recovery she hurt her jaw pretty bad and her eardrums are shot.” I explained, enjoying watching Elsie smile.

“What!? She got shot!? Is she part of the resistance?! Did you start mate healing? Have you marked her?” Mother began to panic, and before I could even explain or answer questions. “That’s it! I’m coming down there to meet her and make sure you two are okay.”

And she hung up, that’s not unusual for my mother. My father’s out of town right now anyway, so I can understand her obsessiveness over me right now. She was a great Queen and Luna to our kingdom, but honestly she was always a better mother. My father on the other hand was normally the opposite. Mom is tall like me with chestnut hair and golden eyes, she was slender and honestly doesn’t even look like she’s 30 though shes much older. Her wolf has kept her young for a really long time, just as my wolf will probably do the same for me once I hit a maturity age. But I stood in the hallway for a moment, enjoying the view of them. Andres must have said something funny, because I heard Claire and Elsie giggle. Her giggle is wonderful, like music to my ears. I look down at my phone and my mother is 10 minuites out. I better warn them.

“Hey, sorry to interrupt, but my Mother is on her way.” I said to them opening the sliding glass door in the Intensive Care Unit.

“Well, this will be fun.” Claire said and Elsie turned around and smiled at me.

Elsie began moving her hands, I really need to mark her so I can hear her.

I looked at Elsie until she stopped moving her hands and I looked up at Claire for a translation.

“Elsie said she’s excited to meet your mother and that she hopes shes just as warm as you are.” Claire translated for me.

“Just curious, how do you know sign language? It’s not a common language to learn in school.” I asked Elsie, leaning against the door frame.

Elsie began moving her hands again. And though I have absolutely no idea what she was saying, I was captivated with how she moved her hands. And I looked up to Claire when she stopped.

“It was common for my Aunt to come and visit us, she is deaf and I wanted to talk with her when she was in my portion of the farm, so I learned from a book I requested from the trucks.” Claire translated and then looked up at me. “My sister is the Lady Maria, I am pretty sure she still attends court with my mother and Lunar services with the high court. She went deaf when she stood next to a building during a raid from rogues when we were just kids. So she learned young.”
