It was a late night and Jamie had just showered and was almost asleep when there was a knock on the door at midnight. At first he was hesitant to get out of bed but when the knocking was persistent, he got up to answer the door. He threw on a tshirt and turned his hallway light on
"I'm coming!" he yelled
When he opened the door he was stunned. There stood Eddie Janko. His former partner and best friend. She looked terrible. Her hair was long and matted, and even in the partial darkness he could see the bruises on her face. She looked like she had been crying. He wanted to hug her, and tell her everything was okay- but apart of him was angry at her for leaving him
"Eddie? What are you doing here? Is that really you?" He asked her
"I'm sorry, I had nowhere to go!" she said wiping a tear away
"Please Jamie... I know you probably hate me, you have every reason too... just please. For one night" she begged
"please. If not for me.... for him" she said as she was also holding a small child which surprised him
"alright" Jamie said
"you two can have the couch" he said
"I'll bring you a blanket and pillow. Hang on" he said
Jamie was still in shock. Was this really Eddie? Was this a prank? He knew he had to hear the whole story after they all rested for the night.
"two blankets and a pillow" Jamie said
"thank you" she said
"I know I hurt you, and I promise to explain" she said
"just get some sleep alright?" Jamie said
"bathrooms down the hall on the left" he said
Jamie tried to sleep but he couldn't. He stared at the clock and watched every minute go by... then every hour until his alarm went off at six thirty. He made sure to turn it off and he got changed quietly. He saw Eddie and her son still asleep on the couch. He wrote a quick note for her and then grabbed a bagel on the way out. The note read
"Eddie, I had to leave early this morning. I will be back around six, we can talk then. My numbers the same and I'm still at the 12. Feel free to use the shower and eat whatever you want. Keep the doors locked. Stay safe. Be home soon"

Jamie went in for role call and his mind was still fuzzy.
"you alright?" Dylan asked
Dylan had been Jamie's new partner a little over a year since Eddie had left. They were okay together... they were both good veteran cops and had each others backs, but it wasn't anything compared to his partnership with Eddie.
"yea, just got no sleep last night" Jamie said
"how come?" Dylan asked
"remember my old partner? Eddie?" Jamie asked
"yea the one who up and disappeared?" he asked
"yea, she came home last night at midnight. With a child" Jamie said
"woah, is it yours?" Dylan asked
"no, no... we never slept together. We were work partners only. She did have this boyfriend though. Barry. On the outside he looked perfect. Handsome, charming and funny. But even when she was here he broke up with her at first because he hated how much she talked about me and work" Jamie said
"I always hated him, but I had to pretend to like him. For her sake... but I know he's why she left. She also was covered in bruises" Jamie said
"damn, thats a lot to take in" Dylan said
"Did she tell you the story or not?" he asked
"no. I told her to sleep last night and I left her a note saying we'd talk later" Jamie said

Eddie woke up with a headache. Her back hurt from being on the couch but also from being beaten by her ex, Barry.
"ahhh" she said as she tried to sit up
"ma-ma" her baby said
"yep, ma-ma's up sweetheart" Eddie said
Eddie picked up her child, which she named Joe after Jamie's brother. She had fallen pregnant with Barry as soon as he had forced her to move. She thought he would change for Joe, but instead he got worse. Even when she was pregnant he never hit her but the screaming and throwing things never stopped. Eddie walked around Jamie's apartment carrying Joe. His apartment hadn't changed since the last time she had been there. She made herself some toast snd cut some small pieces up to feed Joe.
She also made herself some coffee as well and poured Joe some juice. After breakfast she went out to her car and grabbed Joe's high chair and play pen from her trunk and set it up outside of the bathroom. She took a shower and as the water warmed up she stripped off her clothes and looked at herself in the mirror. She bit her lip as she held back tears.
How had her life come to this? How had she gone from being a young, tough badass female who had just become a cop to becoming someone's punching bag? She had been a cop for maybe four years before she had met Barry. She knew the red flags were there early on the first time he broke up with her for talking about Jamie and work too much, but since she hadn't had a serious relationship before that... she decided to give him another chance. Three months later was when he hit her for the first time. She had wanted to hang with Jamie and the guys at the bar and Barry refused to let her go. She made an excuse to Jamie as why she couldn't come and the next day she covered the bruise with make up and never told Jamie the truth. Later that evening Barry apologized and took Eddie out to dinner and told her how much he loved her.
Eddie got in the shower and warm water felt good on her sore muscles. After the shower she got a clean towel and found one of Jamie's 'NYPD' tshirt's and a pair of grey sweatpants. She got changed and dried her hair. Joe was still happily playing the pen outside the door. She saw on her phone where she had missed calls and texts from Barry.
"30 missed calls from Barry Cooper"
"25 text messages from Barry Cooper"
