The distinctive taste of chai stayed on my tongue as I left the cafe. The coffee I had gotten for Lauren had cooled significantly. The chilled air bit against any exposed skin, and as my ears turned pink, I could not feel the pain. Only the hurt of rejecting Will gnawed at my heart. He was endearing, sweet, and much better than the person I was currently engaged to, a bland man to whom I had been engaged through a series of family relations and arrangements. But I had made a promise, and that must be honoured. My engagement can't be thrown away into flames as easily as the huge stack of paperwork, after all. Paperwork was boring, repetitive, only good for pleasing others and what they wanted. The chai I had today was a new experience. Sweet, filled with many unique flavours and a variety of spices and never bland.

If I was a different person, had different responsibilities, a different job, and I could choose between paperwork or chai, I would choose chai.
