Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets is my favorite book in the series. If I went by how good it was alone, it’d be a solid nine. The story is still as entertaining as the other Harry Potter stories. But it’s the novel that showed the cracks in a seemingly perfect world.

This book is essential because of so many things. It’s the book that sets the stage for events in later novels. It also shows the motivations and prejudices of darker wizards and witches and gives insight into why Voldemort terrorized so many people. Even though Voldemort himself wasn’t around, the prejudices remained. They were there before him, and they stayed after he’d disappeared.

Without this book, the Wizarding world would be two-dimensional and dull. The world is more intriguing this way, making readers want to keep exploring despite its problems.

The first book tells us that Harry has slytherin qualities whereas this book shows us. It introduces the horcruxes in the form of Tom Riddle's diary and also shows how to destroy them without having anyone realize it. It also introduces us to Tom Riddle in a proper way and not just Voldemort. And if you squint you can see signs of Harry Potter being a horcrux. It also introduces us to the Weasleys, whom is the best family in the Wizarding World and gives Harry proper father and mother-figures. It also introduces the reason of the war: prejudice against muggleborns.

All in all, while Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets usually flies under the radar for a lot of people when considering which book or movie is their favorite, it actually serves as the stepping off point for most of the major themes in the books.
