Almost

Almost.

I hear it approach.
Gallops getting louder as it gets closer and closer to me.
The majestic existence, foreseen and left to be.
It neighs, whining with its growing passion.

Separation.
The one thing to come between us.
We knew it would happen, just not this far into this.
Now she's caught up with our race.
The finish line nowhere in sight.
So we succumb, after the last ounce of our energy is dropped.
We have run this race, fell and got up.
We have fought this war, gruesome and astounding.
We tried.
We failed.

Never enough.

Like sand through my fingers.
It all crumbled at our feet.
Our time and efforts, ashes.
Burned by distance, by the trust slipping from our grasp.
The castle, that was our haven coming apart.
The pieces we kept picking
Panicking and putting them back together.
Gave one last groan, caved in.
It was all we know, all we had.

So I watch you,
Each step away feels like torment.
Each less audible.
Further and further away, with a frown.
We saw it coming.
We tried our best.

It was never enough.
