Chapter 15

When You Fall, You Fly

=Maka’s P.O.V=

I watched as the sun rose over the horizon, creating a soft glow. The darkened sky began slowly changing into a mixture of shades. Reds and pinks scattered the heavens, dancing and shifting like a kaleidoscope held towards light. The rain had thankfully stopped, lifting my mood just the slightest. Hugging my knees to my chest, I stared out across the small, crumbling shacks and buildings. I had climbed up onto the roof shortly after Soul had fallen asleep. It wasn't an easy task to untangle myself from him but I managed to leave the comfortable warmth of his body without waking him.

Sighing, I rested my chin atop my knees and studied the forest just beyond the village. There was something hiding in-between those trees. Something utterly horrible and terrifying. A beast. A monster that had torn apart a whole town. I shivered as a thought crossed my mind. But wasn't a monster still a person? Dark creatures don’t just manifest out of thin air. They were people once. People who had met grim fates and strayed down blackened paths.

It might be watching me now. It could possibly be conjuring foul thoughts about ripping people apart and stealing their souls. Creating destruction on mass scales. But maybe, just maybe, it had a small voice in the back of its conscious, desperately trying to break through the barrier of sins that had been cast around it. What if it was lonely? So incredibly lonely that it felt the only way to escape that feeling was to burry all emotions and only focus on ghastly things.

A shiver passed through me, causing me to curl body up into a tighter ball. My inner doubts threatened to swamp me under their weight, pulling me further towards my cowardly weakness. Clenching my fists, I squeezed my eyes shut tightly and reminded myself that I could do this.

But there was always that possibility that I could fall.

Silently, Soul and I made our way through the village. We were hoping to pick up any pieces of information we could get. An old woman with a large scar running down her left eye had told us as much as she could before bursting into tears. Her daughter had been taken from her. Cringing, I tried to shake away the images that came to mind. The face of the woman in hysterics would haunt me for a very long time. The way she had clutched my hand tightly in hers, begging me to bring her only daughter back, would never leave my memories.

“This is such a drag,” Soul sighed beside me, bringing me out of my thoughts and back to reality.

“I agree, it’s not exactly an ideal mission but at least were helping,” I replied, glancing at the first row of trees that led into the forest.

This creature, this thing, was lurking just behind those branches. Hidden in the dense over growth of the plantation. Waiting for someone to stop its madness.
