The next morning she was woken up by Demetri and when she turned around and pushed herself on her elbows, she couldn't help but notice the way his gaze roamed her collarbones and the almost invisible traces of disappointment on his face. She smiled, feeling more awake than ever and pulled the sheets from her body with a resolute gesture.

She slipped her feet in her ridiculous slippers and walked straight past the vampire and to the desk, grabbing the carefully placed jewellery box from it. "If you wouldn't have disappeared the way you did, I would have asked you to put it on me last night, but then again, you did disappear, so now you have to put it on me this moment."

She handed him the box and walked into the bathroom, where the only mirror was, hearing his footsteps following soon after. She watched his reflection in the mirror, the way he moved behind her, the distance between them barely existing. The necklace was already in his hands and she moved her messy hair away, exposing the entirety of her neck to him. Her skin broke out in tiny goosebumps when his cold fingers brushed against the nape of her neck as he clasped the lock, the baby hairs on the back of her scalp standing on end. Once again she wished her body wouldn't betray her that way, but then again, she was still human.

She looked at their reflections in the mirror. He was wearing his Guard's clothes, ancient and dark, she was draped in a cream pink nightgown, leaving everything above her cleavage exposed. His eyes were the colour of deep burgundy, hers were an odd kind of blue, like the sea after a storm. He was standing tall and straight, she barely reached his shoulder if she watched her posture. His features were sharp and well-defined, hers were softer and round. On his chest he wore the Volturi's crest, on hers she wore his necklace.

They seemed to be contrasting in every possible way, but she couldn't help but think the sight of two of them together had something magical as well. It was that thought exactly that snapped her out of her trance. What was she thinking? She'd only known the guy for a mere three days. She wanted to give herself a slap across the face, or splash some cold water in it.

"It suits you well," Demetri said, effectively snapping her out of her thoughts. His burgundy eyes travelled from the pendant, over her bare neck, ending by her eyes.

"I love it," she said honestly, her fingers covering the cool pendant. "Thank you very much."

"If you want to, I can show you around the city today," he said.

She turned around, her back facing the mirror, trying to ignore the way she was almost pressed up against him. "That would be awesome."

She was walking next to Demetri, or rather, trying to keep up with him without constantly bumping in the masses. It was like the people here didn't see her at all, all of them slamming into her from different sides. Maybe it was because people were too busy staring at Demetri that they didn't notice the girl walking behind him, she couldn't exactly blame them. Even in his modern-day clothing, he looked like a model.

She noticed him looking over his shoulder for the umpteenth time, and she offered him an apologetic smile. Next thing she knew, he grabbed her hand and pulled her close, his coldness a welcome change from the heat that hanged in the air. She let out a soft squeal of surprise, watching his lips twist in an amused smirk.

"You've got to stand your ground, alright? Even if you're about as small as a gnome," Demetri said, chuckling.

She ignored the way her heart fluttered in her chest as he intertwined their fingers, only nodding at his words. He was so sure in his steps, it was a confidence she lacked. So instead of staring at him like all the people around them were doing, she watched the cute little buildings facing the road. Although the people had changed, the buildings still had the same ancient architecture as the castle, something she loved.
