ROME & JULY Book II

MEDICAL MISSION PART 2

JULY

I did not know that he will be here. When he passed by me kanina, na shock ako. Hindi niya ako nakita. I was going to hide sana kaso saan naman ako magtatago? Bakit ba kasi hindi ko tinignan kung sino ang mga opisyal na nandito. When he noticed me, it was already too late. And he was as shocked as I was.

Mas guapo siya ngayon. He gained a little muscle, hindi naman weight. He is kinda darker this time. When he walked, he still limps. I looked at his finger, tama nga ang BatCom nila, single pa siya. Wala pang asawa. Hindi pa siya nag aasawa. How old is he now? Thirty two. He looked at my finger pero my left hand was inside my pocket. He did not see my ring. He turned away when they started to brief us about the medical mission. Nag breakfast muna kami and then picture taking. He stood behind me. I could smell his perfume. He has not changed it. At one point, He put his hand on my shoulder. Gusto kong tanggalin pero napaka childish naman July pag ginawa mo yun. I let him put that hand on my shoulder. 

During lunch, the senior officers were teasing us already pati yung mga senior doctors. One doctor said, "Okay lang yan,  July, maiintindihan ni Oliver yan." He looked at me when he heard the name of Oliver. After that lumayo siya sa akin. Hindi na siya lumapit pa sa akin.

During the mission I would see him in his phone talking to someone. mukha siyang iritado. Minsan sinigawan pa niya yung kausap niya. Tropa siguro. Pero knowing him, mabait siya sa tropa. Whoever that is, mukhang hindi siya pabooritong tao ni Rome.

Night time pagkatapos ng medical mission, pinakain pa kami ng Batallion ng dinner sa restaurant na. Four lang silang officers na sumama. Yung Bat Com nila, Si Rome na Ex-O. Yung dalawang Lieutenants.  I was sitting at the farthest corner when he came to sit beside me. I looked at him and he smiled at me. Malungkot siya.

"Hi July. Or is it, Doctor July na?"

"July will do."

"Bakit Cruz pa din ang apelyido mo? You did not change it?"

"Nope. Cruz lang."

"Aaaahhh okay. How are you?"

"Okay lang naman."

"How many children do you have now?"

"Wala pa. Busy sa school. I just passed the medical board."

"Ah. Congratulations."

"Thank you. "

" How are your parents?"

"Okay naman sila."

"Doctor Cruz."

"Yes Major Katipunan."

"Wala lang. I never thought we will see each other again."

"Oo nga no? Are you married?"

"Hindi pa."

"Hindi pa? Meaning you're getting married already?"

"Yeah in a month. Mahirap pala. She thinks I am not cooperating."

"Baka naman kasi hindi ka cooperative."

"I give her the budget. I have work, Sana alam niya na with the work that I have, she has to understand. Minsan, gusto ko na din gumive up. Pero, nandiyan na eh."

"Sure ka ba na ikakasal ka? Kasi kung magsalita ka parang kasal ng ibang tao. Hahaha"

"Pagod lang siguro ako. Where do you live in Manila?"

"With my parents...."

"You and your husband? Oliver?"

"Hahahahaha oo, Oliver and I live at my parents."

"Hmmm. Ganun."

"Imbitahan mo naman ako sa kasal mo."

"Bakit pag inimbita kita, pupunta ka ba?"

"Baka."

"See, hindi ka sigurado."

"Oo nga no?"

Looooooong silence

Then he said something na hindi ko maintindihan.

"Huh? PArdon me?"

"Sabi ko, I missed you."

I looked at him. Gusto ko maiyak. Miss din kita Rome. Miss na miss.  I bit my lower lip and I tried to smile kaso naiiyak ako. I looked at him agaian. He was just looking at me.

"Kaso, di na pwede."

"Oo nga. Di na pwede."

I bowed my head to try to hide the tears that are about to fall. I looked away. He looked away too. Lionel Richie and Diana Ross continued to sing our song and we are seated just a couple of inches apart, wanting to touch each other. Probably hug each other, but we can not anymore. Bawal na.

"Will you be in staying in Manila?"

"Oo dun lang naman ako eh. Hindi naman ako umalis."

"Hmmmm."

Silence again.

"July..."

"Yes, Rome?"

"I now this is late.... Pero I need to tell you this."

"Ano yun?"

"I'm sorry. I am so sorry. And I still love you."

And he stood up and left me. I stood up and went up to my room, and I spent the night crying. Crying of lost love and lost chances."
