After writing 2 Anne and Gilbert's romance's I thought I might give the adorabæle Jerry and Dianna a story of their own. This is a 7 chapter short story, hope you enjoy!  -rsc

Diana Barry sat on the hard wooden bench staring out of the window. She hadn't uttered a word to her travel companions since embarking on their journey across the country. How could she have. After all that had transpired the night below.

"Mama" a soft voice beckoned her attention away from the window to the little blond child who was attempting to walk across the train itself as it shook. Reaching out her arms she pulled the child to the bench to stare at the passing trees. The child began slapping the window softly causing her to let out a small laugh. Her companion was almost shocked to hear it, that had not been a sound that he had often heard these days. Flipping to the next page of the newspaper he focused his eyes down at the words, but couldn't help but listen to his wife and child beside him. How had it come to this, where his own wife could not meet his eye.

"We are almost there chérie" Diana whispered ticking the child to let out a boisterous laugh. Placing the child down on the ground the nanny took her and Dinna took the time to beaten her skirt and secure her hat on her head. "You needn't worry, I won't embarrass you in front of my family, just as I wish for the same. We shall remain civil as we are staying here, and we shall settle the matter when we return home" Diana whispered under her breath knowing full well he would listen.

"Yes, dear" is all the man could muster before they pulled into Avonlea station. Stepping out holding her small pouch, her breath caught at the sight of Anne, Gilbert and her family awaiting her arrival. Her eyes teared at the sight of her dearest friend. "Anne"  She hadn't expected to let her emotions get the best of her, but after all that had occurred, Anne's familiar face gave Dianna the feeling that all would be well now that they had arrived.

"You look beautiful my dearest" Anne smiled after letting her go "but, Diana why are you crying?" Anne and Gilbert shared a confused look, to which the dark-haired girl shook her head quickly and smiled. "It's so good to see you" she smiled before going to greet her parents. The sight of a fully grown Mini May, caused Diana to gasp. Her devious little sister was looking more mature and beautiful as the days went by.

"Let me see my grandchild" Mrs Barry giggled taking the little baby in her arms. Diana took the arm of her husband as they followed the family to the carriage. Unfortunately, Anne and Guibert were expected at Green Gables but invited Diana for tea at their new little cottage. Dianna's heart twinged at the sight of their relationship, that was something she desperately ached for. It was always strange having her husband stay in her childhood bedroom with her but after many visits in the past, she was now used to it.

"Anything else misses?" the housemaid asked by the door, Diana shook her head and smiled before muttering thank you. They were expected to go down for dinner in a moment but had time to refresh before then.

"Diana, please" Simon whispered sitting on the edge of the bed. "I can not continue with this" he waved his hands around not knowing the words.

Trying her best to keep her disposition Diana turned from the window to stare at the back of her husband. "You cannot?" she asked as if it were the most ridiculous thing she had ever heard. "Simon, please" her head shook as she watched him stand to turn and face her. His solemn look did indicate that he was woefully sorry for his behaviour, but Diana stood firm.

"I promise it won't happen again, please love, let us start a new" he pleaded to catch her off-guard. In their almost three year marriage, she had never expected him to beg for her attentions, him being such a proud man to start with.

"I need some air" Diana nodded, striding past him she rushed down the stairs and out the front door without anyone stopping her. She found herself in the forest walking along her old school route, somehow she managed to find their old writing shack, which was nothing except for a gather of feathers tied to a tree. It was ironic, as the stories of marriage and love that they dreamed of as kids, was something only reserved to make belive books. They were foolish and childish imaginations that Diana wished she had not tried to apply to her own marriage.

The silence of the summer's day and the calming sound of the trees were abruptly stopped by the sound of cheerful discussions, stepping out and around the big tree, Dianna was surprised to see Jerry walking along the path. His hair was now short and his face looked strong and matured. Before even thinking she found herself racing towards him and giving him a hug, between the foggy tears and caught breath, she pulled away quickly at the sound of a child's voice.

"papa?" a voice asked, Dianna, stepped away quickly her steps taking her away from Jerry and his comforting hug.  What was the thinking, her mind raced.

"Oh Lord, I am so-sorry Jerry. I should have.." she mumbled, feeling quite flustered. Without finishing the sentence Dianna rushed in the opposite direction. She could hear Jerry calling her to come back, but the humiliation of her actions spurred her onwards and into a quick walk back into the house. Her mind was racing as she quickly bathed and changed into a new dress and joined her family for dinner. Somehow the event had caused her to be hyper-aware of Simons movements behind her as he readied himself before dinner. But without a word, she dabbed some scent on her neck and placed a necklace before standing to take his arm to go down the stairs without a word.

Settling into the dinning-room, Mrs Berry brought up the subject of seeing Diana walk into the woods. Simon sipped his port quietly as to let the attention fall to Diana, it was the same thing he wondered as well. As on her return, she seemed even more flustered and quiet than when she had left "After being travelling for so long, I needed to stretch my legs" she replied with a smile.

"And Simon you were settling in?" Mrs Barry inquired further.

"You are the most gracious host of all. I was finalising some documents quickly. So that I would be able to enjoy all the delights of Prince Edward Island," he smiled.

"And you found all that you needed dear?" Dianna asked her husband, knowing full well her mother was watching them.

"Quite, this house is so orderly I did not have a trouble" Simon gritted through a smile and a laugh. As conversations continued and the topic of their agenda appeared, Dianna was quick to intervene and add that she was expected for tea with Anne. And that Simon had business to discuss with her father and so would not miss her.

As Dinner came to a close, the couple retired with the rest of the family. Their nightly routine was stiff and uncomfortable and Dinna brushed out her hair and plated it carefully, her eyes trained on the window. Her mind moved to thoughts of Jerry, she wondered if he was thinking of her too.
