Detective Lila Thompson felt a cold shiver run down her spine as she listened to the anonymous voice on the other end of the phone. "We know where you live," it said before disconnecting. The message was brief but chilling, confirming that the investigation had drawn the attention of dangerous people. Lila glanced around the police station, her gaze narrowing as she scanned for anything out of place.

Officer Ben Price was nearby, sipping coffee at his desk. When Lila approached, he noticed her tense expression. "What's going on?" he asked, his tone shifting from casual to concerned.

"I just got a threatening call," Lila replied, her voice low. "Someone told me they know where I live."

Ben's eyes widened. "That's not good. Do you have any idea who it might be?"

Lila shook her head, but her instincts pointed toward Mayor Harriet Dawson and her associates. The evidence from the missing folder suggested a connection to a broader conspiracy, and this phone call confirmed that they were getting too close for someone's comfort. "It could be anyone connected to the mayor, or even Marcus Greene," she said, her mind racing through the list of suspects.

Ben set his coffee cup down, his demeanor growing serious. "We need to take this seriously. If they're willing to make threats, who knows what else they're capable of?"

Lila agreed and made a mental note to stay vigilant. She couldn't afford to back off now, not when she was so close to uncovering the truth. "I'll be careful," she said. "But we need to keep pushing forward. The threat means we're onto something."

Later that evening, Lila returned to her apartment, her senses on high alert. The usual comfort of her home felt different, as if the shadows in the corners held hidden dangers. She double-checked the locks and closed the blinds, ensuring no one could see inside.

She sat at her kitchen table, reviewing the clues and notes from the investigation. The fragment of the missing folder contained cryptic references to financial transactions, some of which pointed to Mayor Harriet Dawson and other influential figures in the town. Lila knew she needed to find the rest of the folder to get a clearer picture of what Mr. Raymond Barrett had uncovered.

As she worked, her phone buzzed with a text message. It was another anonymous warning: "You're being watched." Lila's heart raced as she read the message. The threat was real, and it was getting more direct. She knew she couldn't take chances.

The chapter ends with Lila's resolve strengthening despite the threats. She knew she was in danger, but she also knew that backing off would mean letting the killers get away with murder. She was determined to find the truth, no matter the cost.
