Hello @YouDreamAboutMe! I'm one of the new breed of Independent Authors and I publish my own books on Amazon Kindle and Smashwords. I did have them published as paperbacks on Lulu.com but have withdrawn them as they stopped selling once I published the ebooks on Kindle and Smashwords. The ebooks are selling well and making me very happy! Lulu charges a fee for converting to ebooks on their site, big mistake as Kindle and Smashwords don't cost anything. Rule no. 1 - make sure your work is up to standard and worth publishing. Rule no. 2 - it shouldn't cost you anything at all to publish an ebook. All money should come to the writer, not the other way around. And waiting for some "publisher" to publish your work is in the past and that is why many of them are going out of business. Writers have taken creative and editorial control of their work back into their own hands, and because of modern technology, have become their own publishers too. It's a great time to be a writer! So keep writing, develop your craft, do your research and I wish you success!
