My family wasn’t killed right before my eyes. My family was the one that killed them. If a king decided that a particular family was a threat, like if they’d grown too powerful or influential, he’d bring the entire family to court in front of the All-ruler. If the All-ruler also declared them guilty he would take any children under 10. There was usually 5 or 6. Those children would stand beside their king and All-ruler and watch as their family was killed by my father, mother, my two older brothers and my older sister. They were not allowed to cry. They had to watch. The now orphans would then become my responsibility. It was my job to train them. Train them in what you ask? Assassination. You see, my family is known as the King’s Executioners. But when the kingdoms think of my family, they don’t think of me. The youngest child of the Raven House is always forgotten when the commoners whisper dark things about my family. I am the girl who walks along the streets and picks flowers and says hello to everyone she meets. I am not associated with my family. I’m the All-ruler’s Assistant to the general public, but everyone in Court knows I’m the All-ruler’s Chief Assassin. Most of the kids I train don’t survive the first year of training. Even fewer survive the second. If, at the end of three years training, they are still alive, they accompany me on several test assignments. Only 1 in 20 will get to this stage. The ones that do are then sworn to serve the All-ruler for life. I was sworn in at 8 years old. When the old Chief died, the All-ruler specifically asked me to take his place. From that day on, I became the first female Chief. I also became the most deadly 12 year old in the land. Two years on, I still am.
