two months later
"wow this mission went on way longer than it should've", y/n remarked
"thank god it's finally over", the jonin with her agreed
it being an infiltration mission, y/n hadn't had any contact with the village or kakashi. so she didn't have much idea of what was going on. around this time, the final stage of the chunin exam must've begun.
entering the village, they headed straight to the arena where the battles were going to happen.
she ran as fast as she could, and entered the stadium but the sight she saw left her speechless.
there was pin-drop silence in the arena. not a single person was awake. and the ongoing fight between sasuke and some hidden sand ninja had left the stadium. the kazekage looked like he had taken the hokage hostage.
but wait a minute. she'd found out on her mission that the kazekage post was currently unoccupied because the previous kazekage had died.
so who was that in his clothes?
she looked around to see any familiar faces at all. and she did.
"y/n!", she breathed a sigh of relief as the familiar voice called out her name. her heart fluttered a bit which she downright ignored.
"kakashi", she ran towards him. "what the hell is going on?"
"my guess is sand ninja have turned against us and everyone is under genjutsu. we need to release it off of as many shinobi as we can"
she nodded, running to sakura, ino, shino, kiba and then shikamaru.
but she found out that he'd already resisted the genjutsu but had gone to sleep instead?????
"SHIKAMARU", y/n yelled furiously, making him sit up at once, "WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU"
"what is it? oh y/n-sensei when did you get back-", he asked, rubbing his eyes
"THE VILLAGE IS UNDER ATTACK"
"aw man", he groaned, getting up lazily
"sakura, release the genjutsu on naruto. and all of you go help sasuke fight the sand dude"
"his name is gaara"
"i couldn't care less. leave.", she ordered and they nodded, setting out
meanwhile, she turned to see guy and kakashi fight off numerous hidden sand ninja.
"fire style: great dragonflame jutsu", she yelled, drawing hand signs at an inhuman speed.
this sent a major part of the now arriving sand ninja flying.
"wow kakashi your student is STRONG!", guy said to the jonin as they continued fighting.
"that she is", he smirked, glancing her way for a split second before focusing on his fight.
"i need to get better at teaching!", guy yelled
"i didn't even teach her most of the stuff calm down!", kakashi replied, kicking another opposing ninja straight across his face.
the sand ninja fighting them were more confused by how the duo was having their own conversation while effortlessly overpowering them.
y/n spotted a summoned toad atop which stood naruto, fighting gaara, who was by the looks of it, a jinchuriki.
"just how much did i miss while i was gone?", she thought as she continued fighting, copying attacks like there was no tomorrow.
she joined in on the conversation between kakashi and guy.
"both of you", she said breathlessly, using wind style to push away more enemy shinobi, "WHAT DID I MISS?!"
"well, sasuke and naruto made it to the final stage"
"orochimaru gave sasuke a curse mark"
"HE WHAT?! i'm gonna kill that creepy snakeysnake asshole", y/n said, venting her frustration towards another ninja attacking her
"oh and as you can see, the sand betrayed us"
"about that guys i don't think that's the kazekage", y/n pointed towards the roof of the hokage's office where a barrier had now formed.
"well these are still sand shinobi", guy said
"also true"
the fighting went on for about two hours more before the sand ninja retreated suddenly.
it was revealed that the sand shinobi were actually acting under the orders of orochimaru who had fled.
and even more shockingly, had caused lord third to lose his life in the process.
somehow, y/n didn't feel an ounce of emotion towards his death. after finding out the truth about itachi, she had tried her best to remain professional and now that he was gone, she was indifferent.
she attended his funeral just for the sake of it. comforted others who were closer to him, or at the very least who he was more humane towards.
she put an arm around naruto as they left the cemetery. he looked like he needed it.
"i'll miss him", naruto said in a low voice, hugging her quietly
"i know", she whispered, ruffling his hair.
kakashi walked upto y/n about an hour later
"you good?", he asked
she nodded, "better than everyone else, i suppose. you?"
he smiled his usual smile. "of course i'm good"
"so who's gonna be the hokage now?", she asked
"that's probably for the elders to decide"
"uchiha?", another person joined the conversation
"long time no see, jiraiya-sensei", she turned around to see the sannin, "how's the 'research' going?"
he laughed, eyeing her up and down just a bit before kakashi cleared his throat.
"so who do you think will become hokage?", kakashi asked
"oh they just asked me to. but i said no", he replied
"WHAT?!", y/n asked in surprise
"it's not my thing. but i know someone who will probably become the next hokage"
"who is he?", y/n asked
"more like who is she", he said and just then, naruto appeared from behind him
"y/n sensei, you know pervy sage?", he asked
y/n laughed hard at the nickname, "very apt", she giggled, "yes i know him naruto. actually trained under him for a bit three years ago"
"let's go naruto", jiraiya grumbled, leaving, "bye uchiha!"
"bye pervy sage"
"shut up"
