Tanner's POV

"Tanner, your phone keeps vibrating!" my classmate yelled.

I stopped erasing the writings on the white board and set the eraser down before coming over to the desk where my phone is located.

I picked it up, turned it on, and saw a notification stating that I have received a new e-mail.

'Mister Tanner Dela Vega, we are pleased to inform you that you have been accepted as a part-timer in X Company. Please report to the Fairplex Convention Center by 3:30 in the afternoon. (January 06, xxxx)'

No way... I'm hired?!

I reread the e-mail multiple times to make sure that my eyes aren't deceiving me. I even rebooted my phone and refreshed my email inbox before finally convincing myself that the email is indeed legitimate.

I checked the time and saw that it's 2:47 in the afternoon. I packed my things before slinging my backpack over one shoulder.

"Is it okay if I go first?" I asked my classmates.

"Yeah, sure. You've helped a lot anyway. Thanks, Tanner," the monitor answered.

I just nodded before descending the building. I was nearing the main gate when someone bumped into my shoulder from behind.

"Sorry!" she yelled before running off.

She ran so quickly that by the time I passed the gate, she was nowhere to be seen. I just ignored her since she doesn't seem like a thief or anything of the sort... and even if she was, I doubt I have anything worth stealing. Besides, I myself am in a hurry.

I boarded a jeepney and paid for my fare right after. My travel time took more than 30 minutes due to the slight traffic. Once I arrived at the convention center, I quickly took notice of the large amount of people already there.

Some are lifting heavy boxes, some are decorating the venue, and some are supervising the workers. While observing them, I felt a light tap on my shoulder. I turned around and saw a man in his mid-forties wearing a polo shirt with the X company's logo.

"Tanner Dela Vega?" he asked while scanning his clipboard.

"Yes, that's me."

"Wear this and then help in organizing the venue. Just leave your belongings in the staff room over there," he said, pointing to a door in the distance.

I accepted the polo shirt and name tag that he was holding out before heading off to a nearby bathroom. I quickly changed before entering the staff room to leave my backpack there.

I helped in lifting boxes and putting up banners for the event. I assisted my fellow workers as much as I can. After all, I am getting paid for this and I'm not someone who slacks off on the job.

The reason why I was so shocked to receive the email is because X Company is a well-known and successful corporation. They're the one that organizes almost all of the major events here in the Philippines.

I really didn't expect to get accepted here. One of the mentioned major events is hosted here at the Fairplex Convention Center and will start later at 5 PM. That event is the largest anime convention in the whole Philippines which is only held once every year. I consider being at this event a great honour.

I've come to love anime when I was still a child. I remember seeing them on televisions at shops we pass by every time we go to the market to get some groceries.

Something about it caught my eye and when I was finally old enough to work and buy my own cell phone, I started watching them.

Though being completely in love with anime, I've never actually been to an anime convention before. Tickets can get really pricey and the fee to this particular convention is much higher than average.

As a fan with no spare change, this is one of the activities in my bucket list that I thought would forever stay unchecked. It's safe to say that my excitement is through the roof!

"Tanner, are you finished?" asked the man who gave me my polo shirt and name tag.

"Yes, sir."

"I'm James Reyes, one of the organizers of this event. Your primary job is to assist me. Can you do that?"

"Yes, Sir Reyes."

"If so then follow me. We're going to check if everything is in place. People have been lined up since last night, wanting to enter first. It'll be 5 PM soon. We cannot afford to dawdle."

True to his word, he didn't even wait for me to respond and just started walking ahead of me. We did rounds and just like what Sir Reyes said, made sure that everything is in their respective places. I will admit, this is tiring. The convention is fairly large after all.

This isn't my first time landing a job, especially one wherein I have to pull muscles and use physical strength. I actually started working even before I entered high school. The jobs started small and minor but as I kept aging, my jobs have gotten more difficult.

I have no parents and grew up in an orphanage which is why I started working fairly early. I started living on my own when I passed my admission test and entered college.

"Tanner, have you read the manual? The one about the rules and regulations that people must follow while inside the premises of the convention center," asked Sir Reyes.

"Yes, sir. I read it while I was on my way here," I said in response.

"While the event is ongoing, your job is to roam around and make sure no one is bending the rules, alright?"

"I have a question regarding that, sir."

"What is it?"

"What shall I do if someone is caught breaking the rules?"

"Give them a warning. If they still won't listen after that, call security. No matter what happens, do not lay a hand on anyone, do you understand? If you need assistance in making a problematic guest make their way out, call security."

"Yes, sir," I answered firmly.

Only a few minutes later, the convention center started to get crowded. Just like what Sir Reyes dictated, I roamed the area and made sure no one is doing anything they're not supposed to.

The rules are fairly simple; no eating, no drinking, no smoking, and the like.

Three hours passed and I felt my legs going numb. I sat down to take a quick break and to let my feet rest even just for a little while.

Two more hours before the event comes to an end...

I took a deep breath and started patrolling again. I can't let loose and have fun like the others attending the convention. I didn't come here as a guest but as a worker. That's the only reason I got here in the first place so I have no complaints.

I've seen my 2D idols in person and there are so many of them! Who would be greedy enough to not feel happy from that? I'm content with this.

I flinched due to the rustling sound of plastic; the type of plastic used as packaging for food. I searched the area with my eyes and spotted someone eating some type of... cracker?

She's hiding in a corner and is facing the wall which makes it hard to see her appearance but I can easily tell that she's cosplaying just like most of the people here. She turned her head slightly and that's when I actually caught a glimpse of her face.

She's beautiful...

She's cosplaying as one of my idols from Demon Slayer, Shinobu Kocho. I've seen numerous people cosplaying the same character but I can confidently say that she's the one who has seriously pulled it off. She really looks like she just came out of the show.

I walked towards her and my action made her face me. Her eyes widened slightly when she spotted my uniform and she instinctively hid her pack of crackers behind her costume.

"Ma'am, eating is prohibited inside the convention center," I told her.

"I-I know that but... I'm really hungry. I've been here for hours. Can't I just finish this? There's not much left..."

I must've weirded her out when I blankly stared at her after she said that. Honestly speaking, I contemplated just letting her finish her crackers. It's true that it's almost finished... but I didn't give in to myself. No matter how beautiful her cosplay looks, I shouldn't let her break the rules. My job is at stake.

"Ma'am, I'm sorry but you really can't. It's against the regulations."

She pouted and sighed at her crackers. "I don't have a bag with me so I can't save these for later. What a waste..."

Maybe she's doing it on purpose to appeal to me. Maybe I'm just weak to pretty faces. Or maybe I'm just overcome with excitement for being at this event. Whatever the reason may be, I thought it would be alright to bend the rules just this once.

I looked around to check for security and other staff. I looked at her and hesitated for another second before finally giving her my nod of approval.

She contained a smile before rushing to finish her crackers, almost choking on them. She slid the packaging inside the pocket of her costume. before turning towards me and grabbing both of my hands.

With a wide smile, she said, "Thank you so much! You're such a nice person! I hope we meet again at the next convention!"

After saying that, she let go of my hands and ran off. I watched her back as she disappeared and blended into the crowd.

What just happened?

My thoughts echoed in my head as I stood there dumbfounded. It's not like that was the first time I held someone else's hand. That wasn't the first time I've seen a person do an excellent job at cosplaying either. But somehow, I was left standing with just a single question in mind.

"Tanner, the convention will be over soon. Don't slack just yet," Sir Reyes said as appeared out of nowhere.

"Y-yes, sir!" I answered, still a little bit flustered

I did my job and really tried to pour my attention into it but I just can't get what happened out of my head. I know she's not actually Shinobu but my heart still leaped due to overwhelming joy. Maybe I really am just excited due to this being my first ever anime convention.

The remaining two hours passed by in a blur and the convention ended. After making sure everyone had left, the workers started cleaning the venue. More people came which I assume are professional cleaners hired by X Company itself.

I was helping out with moving boxes around when I heard a voice call out to me. It was Sir Reyes. I passed the box I was carrying to someone else before coming over to where Sir Reyes is.

"Yes, sir?" I asked.

"I'm dismissing you. I was observing you earlier and one can easily tell that you're serious about your job so I'm letting you off early. You're still a student, aren't you? Go home and rest. Just report to the company tomorrow for your pay."

"Thank you, sir."

I nodded before turning away and walking off. I headed to the staff room to change and fetch my belongings. I chucked the polo shirt I was just wearing inside my backpack. After fixing myself and my things, I left the staff room and closed the door behind me. I walked out of the convention center and saw Sir Reyes talking to some other worker.

I didn't head over to not disturb them. I just bowed my head slightly to pay respect and he did the same.

It's late and there aren't many jeepneys anymore. Even if there are, they're all full of passengers. After 10 minutes of waiting, I finally managed to board a jeep with space for only one more passenger, which is me.

I sat right behind the driver and handed him my fare right after. Sitting across from me is a girl with a large bag in front of her. The bag is placed on the jeepney's floor.

It looks quite heavy...

I looked at her and noticed that we're wearing the same uniform which means we attend the same university. I tried to glance at her face but it's dark and her hoodie and long hair are covering her face. She also has her head down which indicates that she's exhausted.

A few stops later, she got off, carrying her massive and seemingly heavy duffel bag. I noticed a small keychain on the seat where she was just sitting a few moments ago.

At first, I just ignored it but when the jeepney braked and the keychain fell on the floor, I picked it up.

Mizuki? Isn't that a Japanese name?

I decided to keep the keychain temporarily. I'll just drop it off at the school's lost and found tomorrow after class. She was wearing my university's uniform so I think it's pretty safe to assume she also goes there.

I placed the keychain in the hole of my backpack's zipper to avoid losing it just like the owner did. It didn't take long for me to get off the jeepney myself. I greeted the guard at the main gate and he smiled back.

My dorm's building is at the very back of the campus so it's quite a distance from the main gate. The moment I opened the door, my dormmate started to throw questions at me.

"Where have you been?" he asked.

"I was working," I answered.

"Work? It's almost midnight."

"It's a good thing my boss dismissed me early. We weren't even finished cleaning."

"I know you need money but if they're working you to the bone, just find a different job. I'll help you hunt for one."

"Thanks, Drew. It's really okay though. That was just a part-time job and this only happens when there are big gigs and events. The event earlier was especially huge which is why I got home so late."

"If you're sure then alright. If you need anything, I'm here."

I smiled and then nodded. Ever since my first year in this university, Drew has been with me. Our classes are different and we're not even in the same department but we're close friends. I'm also mostly at work if I'm not in class so we barely spend time together outside of our dorm.

I entered the bathroom and took a quick shower to freshen up. I then slid in my pajamas and then brushed my teeth before letting myself crash on my bed. I pulled the covers, closed my eyes, and made my way to dream land.

———

"Tan, are you done with class?" asked Drew

"Yeah, my last class just ended. I'm on my way to the library right now."

"Library? You don't have work today?"

"The owner of the café I work at still isn't back from vacation. I'm free for today," I replied.

"What about yesterday's job? There's none today?"

"Those are just for big events for when they need extra workers," I explained to which he just nodded knowingly. "You still have time before your next class, right? Wanna come with me to the library?"

"Yeah, sure. I'll just kill time there."

And with that, we started walking towards the library. There aren't many people inside since most students still have class at this hour. We spotted an empty table and headed there.

Drew took out his laptop whilst I made my way to the bookshelves. I looked for an interesting book but I couldn't decide on one so I just grabbed a few. Once I got back to our table, Drew's phone screen caught my eye.

Shinobu?

"Drew, scroll back! Scroll back!"

"Huh? Why?" he asked, confused.

"Just scroll back for a second!" I insisted.

Though still puzzled, he scrolled downwards and the last post on his feed came to view. That wasn't what I was looking for so I told him to keep going.

"There!" I pointed.

That's her! The cosplayer secretly eating crackers in a corner!

"Watermoon? What's with her?"

"Watermoon?" I asked back.

"You don't know her? I thought you did since you asked me to scroll back just to see her photo."

"So, who is she?" I repeated the question.

"She's a well-known cosplayer," answered Drew.

She's famous?

"Can you go to her profile? I wanna see."

He pressed Watermoon's photo but before it could load fully, Drew's phone blacked out.

"It's dead," he said.

He rummaged inside his bag for his charger and then pulled it out. He then plugged one end in his phone and the other end in his laptop.

"Sorry, Tan. I forgot to charge my phone last night. Just use my laptop," said Drew.

"No, it's fine. I'll just use one of the library's computers."

"Okay then. Call me if you need anything."

I nodded before setting down the books I picked out earlier. After doing so, I took a seat in front of an unoccupied library computer.

All of the computers here are already turned on. There was an incident before wherein a student broke a computer because he didn't know how to turn it on. Hence, the campus just turned all of the computers on to avoid that from ever happening again.

I opened a tab and went to google. I typed in "watermoon" in the search box and the results astounded me.

She's on google! She really is famous!

I searched her account in Instameter and it didn't take long for it to load since our university has a stable internet connection.

Oh, wow... she's not even following a single account.

Huh... that's strange.

I checked all of her posts and I must admit, she really is good at what she does... but that's not what got my mind all messy and unclear.

"You're not allowed to use social media in the library computers."

I was startled by the voice that spoke out so I immediately turned my head towards the voice's direction. There, I saw a student wearing the assistant librarian's uniform which is an apron. It seems that she was also shocked by my reaction because she flinched.

"S-sorry... I'll remove it," I apologized.

I faced the computer again and started to exit all tabs open. All of which are filled with Watermoon. The assistant librarian noticed that and she sat on the chair beside me.

"You're a fan?" she asked.

"N-no!" again, she was startled with how I reacted. I mean, who wouldn't be when I act so suspicious? "No, I'm not..."

"Is there a problem?" asked Drew who walked over to us after hearing the commotion.

"Hi, Drew," the assistant librarian greeted.

"Oh, Mizuki? Why are you and Tanner together?"

"Tanner?"

"The guy sitting beside you," Drew pointed out.

"I see... so that's your name," she said to me before facing Drew once more. "I don't know him. I just saw him doing something he shouldn't be doing so I came over. You know... assistant librarian duties."

"Sorry, Mizuki—"

"Oh, you don't have to apologize. After all, you did nothing wrong," she said, cutting Drew off before turning her head towards me as if waiting for an apology.

I lowered my head before giving a response. "Sorry... it slipped my mind that students are prohibited to use certain sites in the library computers."

"Tanner, right?" she confirmed.

"Yes."

"Are you finished with all your classes?"

"Yes, but—"

"Let's go on a date!"

"Pardon?" I asked.

"Drew, I'll be borrowing your friend for a bit," she said to Drew before dragging me.

"Have fun! I guess?" said Drew hesitantly before waving us goodbye.

"Huh?! W-wait a second!" she ignored me and continued to drag me out of the library with her.

When we passed by Drew and I's table, I grabbed my bag hanging on one of the chairs. Once we got out of the library, I pulled my hand out of her grasp.

"Hold on," I said. "I don't know you."

"My name is Mizuki Galicia. I'm 21 years old and—"

"No, no, that's not what I meant!" I said, cutting her off. "Why did you suddenly ask me out? This is literally the first time we talked."

Technically, she didn't ask me. She just confidently announced that we're going on a date and that was it. Points for assertiveness.

It's not that I don't like her. I just don't go on dates with random people. First of all, I don't have money to take anyone out on an actual decent date that they would like and second, I might not have work today but I still have to go to the X Company's building to get my pay from yesterday.

And one more thing. Just like what I said earlier, I don't know this girl. I'm not interested in taking a girl out on a date if I don't even like her in the first place.

"Consider it as compensation for breaking a library rule. What, do you not want to? Would you rather have me tap your ID and give you demerit points? I'm an assistant librarian so I'm permitted to do that."

Did she just pull that card?!

The demerit points for breaking a school rule is huge, especially if it's connected to the school's equipment. I can lose a lot of credit for that!

Accessing prohibited sites using a library computer is a big no no since vulgar students used to watch inappropriate videos on the school's computers. Some even went further than that which... well... let's just say they're daring for doing that.

"I know I did something wrong but I already apologized. Can't you let me off with just a warning?" I pleaded.

"As long as you go on a date with me, sure."

I have a tight budget though... I also have to go to X Company.

"There's somewhere I need to be right now. Can I take a rain check?" I asked.

"What about tomorrow?"

The café's owner will be back tomorrow. I have a shift.

"Sorry, but I have work tomorrow."

"Well, when are you free?" she asked.

Honestly, I don't have much time to spare. After classes, I go to work. On days that I don't have a shift, I pay a visit to the orphanage that raised me.

"I really don't have time for—"

"Are you just making excuses to not go? I'm not a bad person, I swear! Besides, it's just one date. You won't regret coming with me."

"It's not that I don't want to, miss—"

"Mizuki," she corrected.

"Right... Mizuki, it's not that I don't want to. I'm just a really busy person. I'm a working student, you see," I explained.

"Don't you have a day off?"

"I do but I always go somewhere on that day. It's like a routine."

"Aww... you already have a girlfriend? You spend your free time with her?"

"No, that's not it! I don't have a girlfriend."

I don't have time for one.

"Then, go on a date with me! Come on, just one date!" she persisted.

"Well... okay. Not now though but when I have free time," I agreed, defeated.

"When would that be?"

"Honestly, I have no idea."

"What's your job anyway? You seem so busy. You're not a macho dancer, are you?" her eyebrows raised in suspicion.

"No, of course not! I work as a waiter at a café."

"Which café?"

"The one in front of a popular flower shop at—"

"Oh, I know that! Bon Café, yes?"

How did she know that? The café I work at isn't very famous. When people hear the café's name, they would always say... "That's the café in front of Mariposa Flower Shop, right?" she asked, as if continuing my trail of thought.

"Yeah, that's the one," I confirmed.

"I haven't been there but I saw some reviews online and they were pretty high. They said the cake there tastes heavenly."

That's true. The cakes are appetizing both in taste and presentation. The only reason I've tried it is because the owner is easygoing and sometimes gives us cakes and other desserts to take home.

"Do you want one? I'll just bring you one since I really don't know when my schedule would loosen up."

Her eyebrows furrowed as if she didn't like the suggestion I gave. Did I say something wrong?

She later recovered and her upset look turned into a cheery smile. "Can't be helped, then! I'll wait for that cake so you better not back out, understand? No take backs!"

"Of course," I assured.

The cakes sold at the café aren't pricey so even if I never bought one before, I still think it's quite affordable considering its quality. Besides, I'll get my pay from X Company later. It'll be fine.

"I need to go now."

"Sure, sure! See you soon, Tanner!" she waved me goodbye before walking back inside the library.

What a strange girl...

I descended the building and left the campus. I waited for a jeep and boarded an almost empty one. I then made my way to the main office of X Company.

The moment I entered the building, photos from big events that X Company organized greeted my sight. Pictures from yesterday's anime convention are also already framed and posted on the walls.

I saw Watermoon's gigantic photo dressed as Kocho Shinobu, taking up one entire wall. This was definitely taken yesterday.

I didn't spend much time inside X Company's building. I saw Sir Reyes once more and he was also the one who handed me my pay. It was cash, actually. The envelope is pretty thick too.

After receiving the envelope, I thanked Sir Reyes before making my way back home.

I entered the dorm room and it was empty. Drew must still be in class. I set my bag down and then took out a change of clothes. I changed, sat down, and studied for my class tomorrow.

Due to my lack of attention to my surroundings, I didn't even notice when night came. I looked out the window and saw that it was already dark outside.

I stood up and closed the curtains just like my usual routine when nightfall comes. I was about to leave the dorm room to buy some food when the door opened.

"I brought dinner," said Drew.

"Thanks, Drew. How much do I owe you?" I asked.

"Dude, none. Come on, you're still not used to this after all these years? What a down to earth person."

Drew often buys food for me when he buys a set for himself. He also gets worried when I skip my meals or if I lose sleep over school or work. He can get pretty... motherly.

He placed the food he bought on the table before washing his hands. After doing so, he took our dinner out of the plastic bag and opened its container.

"What are you still standing there for? Let's eat."

I washed my hands and dried them with a tissue before sitting across Drew.

We ate and after we finished, I cleaned up while Drew changed his clothes. After throwing the containers in the bin, I heard Drew call out my name.

"Is that your keychain?" he asked, pointing to my bag.

I looked at where he was pointing and I suddenly remembered the keychain I picked up on the jeepney. I was going to hand it over to the lost and found but I forgot.

"Oh, that's not mine. I'm gonna drop it off at the lost and found tomorrow," I replied.

"No, don't!"

"What do you mean? Why not?"

"Just keep it."

"Why would I? The keychain's not mine. Besides, the owner might be looking for it. It's customized and looks quite expensive."

"Just listen to me and keep the keychain."

Why is he acting so suspicious?

I just ignored him and fixed the books and other supplies I'm gonna need for tomorrow's class. After making sure everything's in my bag, I entered the bathroom and brushed my teeth. I then lied down on my bed and pondered.

I can't get that girl from earlier out of my head. Mizuki, huh?

I wonder what she had in mind? Why did she ask me out on a date and why was she so determined about it? I swear, that was the first time I've seen and talked to her.

Is she a secret admirer? Wow, Tanner. Way to be a narcissist.

Well, even on the off chance that she does like me, why me? I'm not ugly but she can certainly do better. She's beautiful and can go for any guy she wants so why me? Why not Drew? It looks like they're already acquainted with each other anyway. Plus, Drew is a good-looking man with a good family background. It doesn't make sense.

———

The whole day passed with no sight of Mizuki. My shift just ended and I'm now eyeing the cakes on display, trying to choose which one to get for her.

I took out a slice from three different cakes and one cupcake. I put them all in a box and arranged them neatly just like how I would for other orders.

"Did someone call for a delivery?" asked my co-worker.

"Ah, no. I'm buying these."

"This is the first time you bought something here. Is it for someone? Your girlfriend, maybe?"

"Nah, I don't have one." I denied.

"I can't tell if you're nonchalant or just a really good liar."

"Hey, I'm not lying."

Well, he is right about one thing. I've never bought anything from here before and here I am now, buying a cake not even for myself or for the children at the orphanage but for some random girl I've only met and talked to once in my life. I should rethink my life decisions.

"I'll wrap this up. You go ahead and change."

"Thanks," I said before entering the staff room.

I changed out of my uniform and wore the t-shirt I wore when I came to the café. I took out my wallet and then left the staff room, turning the lights off before I go.

"Here you go, Tanner!" my co-worker handed me the box.

I took it before handing him the exact cost of the cakes. After paying, I waved him goodbye and went straight home.

I entered our dorm room and saw Drew busy typing on his laptop. He greeted me without looking my way and just continued working on his laptop.

I opened the fridge and placed the cake inside so the frosting wouldn't melt. If I'm gifting something to someone, I might as well do it properly.

But, wait... how will I give those cakes to Mizuki?

I forgot to ask for her contact information and I don't know what department she's in either. I don't even know what her year is. If only I didn't cut her introduction short then maybe I wouldn't have this problem.

...does Drew know?

"Drew?," I called out.

"Yeah?" he answered without taking his eyes off his laptop.

"Do you have Mizuki's number?"

His hands stopped typing before looking at me, having a smirk on his face, slightly raising one of his eyebrows. "Why do you ask?"

"There's something I need to give to her," I answered.

"Hmmm?" a teasing tone escaped his lips and a dreamy look crept up on his face.

"I'm serious, man! Stop looking at me like that!"

"I think it's better if you ask her yourself. Mizuki and I have class together tomorrow. Our last class is in building A's room 507."

"Do I really have to come over? Can't you just ask her to meet me or something?" I asked while looking for a change of clothes.

"Tan, I'm not gonna play cupid for you and Mizuki. Aren't you the guy in the relationship? Man up a little and work for your own love story!"

"Love... story?"

"Woah, this is the first time I've seen you blush like that! Could Mizuki be 'the one' for you?"

"Quit it, dude!" I tried to act composed before running to the bathroom.

This isn't a love story! There's no love story at all! I don't have time for such things! My budget doesn't cover love costs! It's way too pricey for me! I can't afford it!

I changed my clothes and brushed my teeth before exiting the bathroom. I could still feel Drew's teasing gaze but I just ignored him since I know I'll just get played and flustered again.

I finished all that needs to be finished for tomorrow's class before crawling under the covers of my comfy bed.

Love story? No way! I'm sure Mizuki wouldn't fall for someone like me. I'm also sure that I don't have the money and luxury to spoil her with food she likes and activities she enjoys. None! None at all!

I'll force Drew to give the cakes to Mizuki tomorrow. They have classes together so it shouldn't be a problem.

———

I said that but... what am I doing in front of room A507?

The door flung open and Drew and I met gazes. We stared at each other with a slightly startled expression before he came closer and patted my shoulder twice.

"You got this, Tan," he said like a proud dad before walking off.

Got what? I'm just here to deliver cake.

"Tanner?"

"H-hi," I awkwardly greeted.

"Drew already left. Didn't you see him?"

"I did, but I'm not here for Drew..."

"If so then... for me?"

I nodded and raised the box of cakes to deliberately show her that I bought some. Her eyes lit up, similar to how a child looks when gifted a toy.

"You really bought one? I honestly didn't expect you to go through with that. Thank you, Tanner!"

"Hey! I'm a man of my word, okay?"

She chuckled. "Of course. Let's go."

"Go where?" I asked, puzzled.

"We'll eat the cake you brought. There's still time before your shift, right? It's still early."

"O-okay."

I swear I'm a social person. I don't know how this girl is making me this flustered.

She descended the building and I just quietly followed behind her. We went to the open field of the campus where many students could be found killing time.

There are mats lent by the school for students to sit on. We took one and laid it at an empty spot on the field. We sat down and Mizuki opened the box of cakes I brought her.

"These look so pretty!" she pointed out. "Thank you, Tanner! You're such an angel!"

I rummaged through my bag and looked for the fork I took from the café. When I got a hold of it, I handed it to a confused Mizuki.

"Where's yours?" she asked.

"What do you mean?" I asked back.

"Your fork. How are you gonna eat these if you don't have a fork? You can't exactly just use your hands. Apart from being unsanitary, that's bound to cause a mess."

"It's fine. I'm not gonna ea—"

"There's no way you're not taking a single bite! You bought these so you should have some too."

She opened her bag and took out a disposable fork from it. Now, the situation has been reversed. Mizuki handed a disposable fork to a confused me.

Why does she have a fork in her bag? Is that normal for girls?

"I bought lunch earlier and that came with it. Don't worry though. I haven't used that," she explained.

Do girls also have the ability to read other people's thoughts?

"いただきます!"

Romaji: itadakimasu

"You can speak Japanese?" I asked, surprised.

"Of course! I am Japanese after all. Is it not obvious? I thought you already knew from my name," she chuckled.

Oh, yeah. I didn't even notice that. Mizuki's a Japanese na— wait... Mizuki?

I glanced at my bag and that's when I remembered the keychain I found in the jeepney. I grabbed my bag to take a closer look at the keychain.

Mizuki!

"Everything alright?" she asked while munching on the cake.

I took the keychain off my zipper and showed it to her. "Is this yours?"

Her eyes widened. "Where did you get that?!"

"I saw it inside the jeep I rode in."

"I knew that's where I dropped it! That's mine, yeah."

I handed her the keychain and she hooked it to her backpack's zipper. "Thank you, Tanner."

I smiled at her before having a bite of the cake. There are plenty of other students here lounging with us and I can tell they're looking at us. Most are also whispering "couple goals" under their breath.

I just ignored them and continued enjoying the cake with Mizuki. We ate one slice each and there was one slice of cake and a cupcake left in the box. I closed it and retied the ribbon on it.

"Do you stay at the campus dorms?" I asked.

"Nope. I live close by so I didn't get a dorm," she answered.

"I'll walk you to the terminal before I leave for work."

"No, it's alright. I still have to go to the library."

"Then I'll just walk you there."

"Are you sure? You might be late to your shift."

"It's fine. There's still time. The library is nearby anyway."

She nodded in agreement. She wore her backpack and carried the remaining cake to take home. I also slung my bag over one shoulder and rolled the mat we just used. I placed it back in its container before we started walking towards the library.

Like what I said, I walked her to the library. I noticed the librarian's sharp glares so I couldn't say goodbye to Mizuki properly. I just waited for her to enter the library before I finally left.

———

Two weeks have passed since the day Mizuki and I ate cake together at the field.

Again, I forgot to ask for her contact information which admittedly is quite stupid of me. I can't believe we ate cake together and I never even asked for her contact information or at least just her year and department.

It's been two weeks since we last talked but... I still see her everyday! I go to the library daily in hopes of talking to her but cowardice always gets the best of me.

The librarian also shoots me death glares every time I'm there so that just made it harder for me to approach Mizuki. Despite my everyday appearance here at the library, Mizuki hasn't noticed me once.

I don't know why but every time she walks towards my direction, my body automatically looks for a place to hide. Of course, I go to whatever hiding place I can find just so Mizuki wouldn't see me. Sometimes, I even go as far as leaving the library if I can't find a decent hiding spot.

Now, my last class just ended and just like my usual routine, I'm on my way to the library. Hopefully this time, I'll have the guts to talk to her.

I arrived at the library's floor but I didn't enter as I saw Mizuki standing outside.

She was talking with someone on the phone. Her back is facing me so I can't really see her expressions but I can tell from her actions that she's restless.

After hanging up, she rushed inside the library and took her bag before dashing out. She ran right past me but didn't notice me. Probably because of the phone call.

It seems urgent. I wonder what happened...

The next day, I went to the library after my last class but Mizuki wasn't there. I checked every corner of the library but she was nowhere to be found.

"Mizuki's not here."

The voice made me jump since I didn't expect anyone to talk so sharply inside the library. I faced the direction where the voice came from and the librarian's tall figure greeted my sight.

She could just stare at me from afar and I'd be scared but now that she's right in front of me, I'm terrified!

"May I ask where she is?"

"Why are you asking me? Aren't you friends?"

There's no need to have a rude tone. I was just asking...

"Oh, never mind... I'll be going then."

I've already exited the library when I heard the librarian call out. "Young man," she called.

I turned before replying politely. "Yes, ma'am?"

"If you don't have any good intentions with Mizuki, then I suggest you leave her alone. She's a nice kid," she warned blatantly before walking back inside.

I don't mean any harm. Although I'm interested in her, I have no ill intentions...

———

After my last class ended, I decided to not go to the library for today. The librarian's tone yesterday was really sharp and she was implying that I'm nothing but trouble to Mizuki.

I'll just come over there when the tension abates, I guess.

I went home to the dorm and dropped off my heavy books before changing into a plain t-shirt and heading to Bon Café for my shift.

After arriving there, I changed into my uniform which is a white long sleeve. I usually stay behind the counter and when a customer comes, I let them choose a table and then I'll come over when called. At times when the café is not crowded, I escort the customers to an empty table.

There was already a seated customer when I came in and my co-worker had already prepared her order. All I had to do was to take her order to her table and take my leave which is exactly what I did.

After placing the order on her table, I saw a little boy wandering outside. His eyebrows are furrowed and it's clear that he's lost and doesn't know what to do.

His clothes are clean and even looks designer so I'm sure he's not a kid living on the streets. There aren't much customers at this time of day so I decided to go outside and talk to the little guy.

"Are you lost?" I asked.

He looked my way and almost immediately shot me a death glare.

Ahh... spoiled rich kid?

"Do you need help?" I asked again.

Same as before, he remained silent and didn't utter a word. He turned away from me but before he could walk off, his stomach grumbled.

"Come with me. There's food inside," I invited.

"My sister told me not to talk to strangers."

He was taught well. Props to that.

"Your sister is right, but I'm not a bad person. Choose whatever you want inside the café. I can't have poisoned all the food there, right?"

"But... what if you did?"

I crouched beside him and pointed to the customer whose order I delivered earlier. "See, she's eating it and she's fine. That proves that at least one type of food is absolutely not poisoned, right?"

He didn't answer and just observed the lady eating her cake inside the café. He hesitated before talking. "I don't have any money..." he said sheepishly.

Clearly. I never expected a little kid to carry around money. Plus, it looks like he just ran away from home.

"It's okay," I reassured him.

He nodded slightly before following me into the café. I made him sit on the table nearest to the counter so I could keep an eye on him. I gave him a glass of water and he chugged it down like a champ.

"What do you want to have?" I asked.

"I'll have whatever that lady is having," he replied, pointing to the customer next to the window. "Just because her food doesn't seem to be poisoned."

"Alright then," I replied with a gentle smile.

I took out a slice of red velvet cake for him and he even eyed it before taking a bite. While he was munching on the cake, I tried getting information out of him to find out how to contact his family or guardian.

"Does your family know where you are?" I asked.

He didn't respond and just kept his head low. I'm assuming that means they don't.

"What's your name?"

Again, he stayed silent. He still doesn't trust me after confirming that the water and cake I gave him are completely safe to consume. That's fine too. At least, he won't get fooled easily by people with bad intentions.

"Sora!"

I reacted and turned my head towards the voice that yelled and I saw... Mizuki?

She ran to our direction and quickly buried the little boy in her embrace.

"What are you doing here? You little brat!" she exclaimed.

"お姐さん..."

Romaji: onee-san

Japanese?

"Seriously, stop leaving the house on your own! What if something bad happens to you, huh?!" she scolded, slightly panicked.

Tears were starting to form in the kid's eyes and Mizuki let out a frustrated sigh. She patted his head and the boy seemed to have calmed down after that.

"Mizuki..." I muttered, still in shock.

Her eyebrows raised and her eyes widened a little which meant she was also startled. I just waved awkwardly like an idiot.

"Tanner? What are you doing here?"

"I work here," I answered.

She examined the surroundings and only just realized where she is. "Oh, sorry! Don't get me wrong, I didn't forget where you work. I just didn't notice that we're in Bon Café. You see, I sprinted here faster than Usain Bolt."

"Sprinted? Why?"

"Well, I was looking for this little dude right here so I was asking around if someone has seen him. I asked a group of people and they said they saw him with a tall man entering this café so I panicked. I thought Sora was being lured and kidnapped."

Do I look that suspicious?

"Anyway, I'm glad it's you. I wouldn't know what to do if something bad happened to him."

"It's nothing. I just saw him wandering outside, looking like a lost duckling so I approached him," I explained.

She bowed to thank me. "Thank you... and I'm sorry for the trouble my little brother caused."

Ahh, so they are siblings. That explains the Japanese names.

"Please raise your head! It's okay, really!"

"姐さん," called Sora.

Romaji: nee-san

"Sora, apologize to him."

"No, I'm telling you it's fine! You don't have to!" I said, stopping her. "I'm just glad Sora has a guardian."

"Tanner, I'm seriously grateful. How much is the cake Sora ate? I'll pay—"

"I already told you to not worry about it. Just take good care of your brother," I assured her.

"Then... let me treat you to dinner."

"There's no need for tha—"

"Please, Tanner? It's the least I can do."

Why are Japanese people so nice?

"Sure but I'm not done with my shift yet," defeated, I gave in.

"Tanner, I'm letting you go early," said the owner of the café.

"Pardon?"

"It's okay, just go. There aren't many customers today anyway."

"Thank you, boss," without questioning his order, I thanked him. "I'll go change first," I told Mizuki and she just nodded her head in response.

Just like what I said, I entered the staff room and changed. I also grabbed my belongings before going back to Mizuki and Sora.

"Boss, we'll be taking our leave first."

"Alright, take care of your girlfriend and her brother. Get home safe," he reminded.

I just ignored the fact that he referred to Mizuki as my girlfriend and Mizuki didn't seem to mind either so we just smiled politely as a response before leaving the café.

We were waiting for a jeepney when Mizuki's cell phone suddenly rang. She picked up the line and held her phone next to her ear.

"Hello, dad? Yeah, Sora's with me. Actually, we're with a friend. We're planning on eating out... huh? What, are you sure? Okay..."

She ended the call and slid her phone back in her pocket.

"Tanner, is it okay if we eat at our place?"

What?! How is that okay?!

"Our father suggested it. He told me to just take you home so we can have dinner together."

"Okay..."

"ただいま!"

"おかえり."

The middle aged man who welcomed Mizuki and Sora home eyed me. He's most likely their father.

"Good evening, sir," I greeted nervously.

"Hmm... come in. The table is already set up."

Their father entered first whilst Mizuki and Sora took off their shoes. I also took mine off as basic courtesy in a Japanese home.

They changed into indoor slippers and Mizuki handed me a pair as well. I wore them and we headed to their living room to drop off our backpacks.

We washed our hands in their kitchen before making our way to the dining area. I pulled out Mizuki's chair to assist her and I did the same to Sora.

I sat down beside Mizuki and that's when I noticed that sitting across from me is our librarian at the university. She didn't even shoot me a nasty look this time. She straight up threw daggers at me with her death glare.

What is she doing here?

She's sitting next to a beautiful middle aged woman with Japanese features. She's probably Mizuki and Sora's mother.

"Good evening," I greeted once more.

"Oh, I almost forgot to introduce him. This is Tanner. He found Sora wandering on the streets. We attend the same university."

"Are you Mizuki's boyfriend?" the librarian asked.

"Auntie, stop scaring him," scolded Mizuki.

Auntie? She's related to the librarian?

"Nice one, Mizuki! You scored yourself a handsome man. He's tall too, unlike your father here."

Wait... huh?

"Mom, he's not my boyfriend. Stop scaring the guy already. Can't you see he's uncomfortable with your comments? Sheesh..."

"There was no need to deny the obvious," her mother whispered under her breath.

"母さん!"

Romaji: kaa-san

"Okay, okay! How stingy..."

"Let's eat," said their father.

Mizuki lowly snarled before speaking. "いただきます."

Romaji: itadakimasu

Mizuki's family also said their thanks for the food and I just did the same but instead of speaking out comfortably, I muttered. Mizuki still heard me and she chuckled.

"Why are you whispering? Your Japanese sounds good," she said.

I gave her a slight smile as a response. She handed me the dishes and even placed the food on my plate herself. I thanked her and she just smiled and scrunched her nose.

We ate quietly and I tried my best to keep my head low. My embarrassment is keeping me from looking at her family and interacting with them.

After cleaning our plate, I tapped Mizuki's hand under the table. I told her that I needed to go and she nodded before standing up. I mimicked her actions and stood up myself.

"Leaving already? Why don't you tell us something about yourself first?"

"Mom, he has to go. We still have class tomorrow," said Mizuki.

"Actually, I have a better idea! Tell us the story of how you proposed to my daughter!" their mother suggested cheerfully.

"ごちそうさま!" said Mizuki aggressively.

Romaji: gochisousama

"Let's go, Tanner," Mizuki dragged me to their living room.

I took my bag and slung it over one shoulder before walking to their front door. I wore my shoes and was puzzled as to why Mizuki is also changing her shoes.

"You're going out too?" I asked.

"Let's take a short stroll before you go."

"Sure..."

Before we could step out of their house, I felt someone tug on the bottom of my shirt. I turned my head and saw Sora staring at me with an unpleasant look.

"I don't like you," he bluntly spoke out.

He still doesn't like me after all that?

"My 姉貴 is mine. Don't steal her away from me."

Romaji: aneki
Translation: big sister

He was speaking calmly but I can sense the bitterness in his tone.

"Sora, stop that! Stop being rude to the guy that saved you," scolded Mizuki.

She didn't wait for Sora's response and just pulled me out of their house. "Sorry about that," she said. "My mother is an airhead so she kept saying things without thinking about it first."

"Don't call your mom an airhead."

"It's true, I tell you! She's the typical airhead anime character that everyone loves. I'm sorry about my father too. He's a nice person! Most of the time. He's just not used to me taking a guy home... even though it was his idea. I don't get how his mind works either," she giggled.

"It's alright. You're close to your family, huh? Watching you get along with each other is relaxing."

"Are you not close with your family?"

"Oh... I'm an orphan. I was raised at an orphanage."

"Oh, I didn't know... I'm sorry..."

"It's fine. I'm not bothered by it anymore. The people at the orphanage are really caring and truly love us. I treat the kids there like my actual siblings."

"That's good then. At least you didn't grow up alone, right?"

"Yup, I'm happy and content. By the way, why did Sora run off in the first place?"

"He's very clingy and always wants me to stay by his side but obviously, I can't do that. I skipped out on library duties yesterday and played with him all day to prevent him from running away again but look what happened today! Maybe I'm spoiling him too much."

That means this wasn't the first time Sora ran away. That was probably the urgent call Mizuki got the day before yesterday.

"So that's why you weren't at the library yesterday," I mumbled to myself.

"You went to the library yesterday?" she asked.

"N-no...?"

"Ohh? You're saying no but you clearly know I wasn't there yesterday. Tell me the truth, you always come there for me, don't you?"

"...okay, fine! You're right! I come over daily just to see you!" I hid my face due to overwhelming shame. She didn't tease me like I expected so I raised my head to glance at her.

"I-I was joking..." her cheeks are flushed and she looked taken aback by what I had just admitted.

Oh...

She suddenly let out a laugh which made me look back at her. "Okay, I guess I also owe you a confession. I honestly didn't care that you used Instameter in the library's computer. The only reason I became an assistant librarian is because my aunt asked me to."

"Then why did you ask me out on a... date?"

"I just wanted to befriend you. I saw you at the library but I had no idea how to approach you so I nearly gave up but then, you accessed Instameter. Giving you a warning was just an excuse to talk to you. Aren't I clever?" she said proudly.

"But why would you want to be friends with me?" I asked, still confused.

"Because you're nice! Even though eating was prohibited inside the convention center, you still let me! You even made sure other people won't see me! I was really hungry that time, you know? You were like an angel straight from heaven!"

I remember doing that but... wasn't that Watermoon? Don't tell me...

"That was you?!"

"Oh... I guess the cat's out of the bag...?" she said, shrugging her shoulders.

"But... I thought that was Watermoon. Drew said so." She raised her eyebrow which helped with my realization. "You're Watermoon?!" I freaked out

"...yes?"

"No way! I totally didn't recognize you!"

"You're not supposed to, you know? Cosplay makeup is hea-vy" she enunciated each syllable.

"That's amazing! You're so good at cosplaying!" I complimented her, genuinely impressed. "Wait! I hope you're not thinking that the only reason I helped you is because you're famous. I was completely clueless at the time."

"Don't worry. I already figured that out when I caught you looking me up."

We happily chatted while walking to who knows where. I became talkative which rarely happens because I really didn't expect Mizuki to be Watermoon.

I asked her who helps her in doing her makeup and costume and said she does it all on her own.

We exchanged contact information such as our number and social media tags.

I'm still starstruck. I didn't expect that such a talented, kind hearted, smart, and just overall beautiful person exists.

"This is my stop. They're probably looking for me."

"Thanks for the dinner. Be careful on your way home."

"You too. Oh, and Tanner? Contact me, okay?"

"Of course," I replied before she completely turned her back and walked away.

I rode a jeepney home. Drew was working on some projects when I entered the dorm.

"You got home kinda late. Have you had dinner yet?" he asked.

"Yeah, I ate with Mizuki," I replied.

"You guys are already that close to have dinner together? You move quick, Tan!" he teased.

I wonder what his reaction will be if he finds out that we had dinner with Mizuki's entire family. He'll probably squeeze details out of me. Better not tell him.

I just ignored his teasing and did my night routine of changing and brushing my teeth. I laid down on my bed and fidgeted with my phone for a bit. My screen lit up and I saw a notification. Mizuki sent me a message.

———

20:52

Thanks for today,
Tanner. I'll go to
sleep now. See
you tomorrow!
Goodnight!

Thank you too.
Goodnight! :)

———

Ever since that day, we became closer. We hang out almost everyday and at times when our schedules don't match, we talk over the phone.

A few months passed and summer vacation came. I expected Mizuki and I to meet at least once but that didn't happen.

Her family took a trip to Japan and visited her mother's family. Despite that, we still talked everyday through messenger.

Just a few days left before the next semester begins. It has also been a few days since Mizuki's last reply to my message.

I don't know why she stopped reaching out because we didn't fight or have an argument. She's not just unresponsive, she also hasn't read my messages.

Maybe she's just busy. It's fine, I guess. We'll see each other in a few days anyway.

———

The first day of the new semester began and I wasn't mistaken since she jumped on me the moment I stepped foot out of the classroom of my last class.

"タン, 久しぶり!" she greeted. "Sorry I couldn't reply to your messages. My charger broke and I couldn't exactly borrow my family's charger since theirs are different from mine," she explained.

Romaji: Tan, hisashiburi
Translation: long time no see, Tan

"It's alright. I thought you were just busy," I commented.

"Don't worry, Tan. I've bought a new charger so now, I can reply to your messages faster than Flash!" she reassured me.

I let out a small laugh upon hearing those words. She hasn't changed a bit. Still as cheerful as ever.

"You still have library duties?" I asked.

"Yup, but I still have one more class before that."

"I'll walk you there."

We descended the building and walked towards the east wing where her class is. I just followed her since I don't know her new schedule. Despite having a new schedule, our routine still hasn't changed.

Like before, I would walk her to the library or to her next class before leaving for work. If our schedule happens to match, we would eat lunch together then I'll walk her to class before heading to mine.

"Here we are," she said.

"Goodluck with class. Don't just eat and sleep inside. That's a classroom, not a hotel," I reminded.

"I got it already, sheesh! I'm not a kid anymore," she argued. "Oh, before I forget. It's Sora's birthday on Saturday. Come over, okay?"

"Won't Sora get mad if I attend his birthday party? He hates me."

"He doesn't hate you, Tan. He just has a sister complex," she said, shaking her head. "Just come, okay? I'll be waiting!" she said before waving me goodbye and entering the classroom.

Sora's birthday, huh... what should I get him as a present? The only thing he likes is his sister and she's not even a thing.

———

Saturday came and I decided to bring Sora the red velvet cake he ate at the café. I know they're rich and can buy all the cakes they want but Sora seemed to enjoy this before.

The door flung open and we were both startled by each other. "How long have you been standing there? Come in, come in," Mizuki's mother invited.

She handed me the same pair of slippers I wore a few months ago when I had dinner with them. I took off my shoes and changed into the slippers she gave me.

"Don't be shy, dear. Tanner, yes?"

"Yes, ma'am—"

"Please, call me お母さん. Ma'am is for old people."

Romaji: okaa-san
Translation: mom

"Oh, right... you don't speak Japanese, do you? Mama will do."

"Tanner, you're here!" Mizuki joyfully greeted.

Beautiful as usual...

"Why is he here? I don't want him here."

"Sora!" she scolded.

Sora glared at me before heading off somewhere. Mizuki followed him while calling out his name.

"Don't mind him, Tanner. He just loves his sister too much. He always shoos away all of Mizuki's suitors," said Mrs. Galicia.

All? How many suitors has she had?

"All of them?" I clarified.

"Yes, all of them! Every time a suitor comes here to court Mizuki, they would run away in frustration because of something Sora did. Word got around so now, no one comes here to court my daughter anymore. It's a good thing you're here, Tanner! You two have been staying strong for a few months now, right?"

"We're not—"

"Stop standing by the front door. Your legs will get tired," she said, cutting me off.

I placed my shoes in one corner before following Mrs. Galicia into the living room. I initially planned on giving Sora the cake I brought but since he ran away as soon as he saw me, I just handed the cake to Mrs. Galicia.

She thanked me before apologizing for the way her son acted. "Just wait here for Mizuki. I still have matters to attend to in the kitchen," she told me.

I sat down and waited patiently for Mizuki to come. A few minutes later, I saw her pouting face walking towards my direction. She sat down beside me and let out a loud sigh.

"Tan, I'm really sorry about Sora. He's such a brat!"

"It's alright. I'm already used to him acting that way."

We chatted for a bit and stopped when Sora's friends and visitors came. They had a party in the backyard while Mizuki and I ate indoors. We could still see them through the glass door and window.

Sora and I's gazes met and I was surprised when he flashed me a small smile.

Did Mizuki say something to him?

"Sora smiled at me..." I stated, still a little dazed.

"Yeah, I saw! My brother is such an angel!" she proudly announced. "Shall we go out for a walk?"

"Is that okay?"

"Yeah, it's fine. They would know that when I suddenly go missing, I'm just hanging with you. Let's go?"

"If you say so."

We left our used dishes in the kitchen sink before changing into our shoes. We left their house and walked towards... where are we going?

I just followed Mizuki since I got the hint that we're actually going somewhere this time and not just taking a stroll like we usually do.

It's dark and it won't look good if we disappear from their house for too long. I don't want Mizuki's parents to think badly of me. I have no bad intentions with their daughter. None at all.

"Are we going somewhere?" I asked.

"I'll take you to my secret hideout," she said, grinning at me.

Secret hideout?

I just followed her footsteps and noticed that our surroundings are getting less and less populated.

The houses and other structures lessened and it didn't take long for us to be surrounded by trees and plants.

Are we in a forest? What's going on? Is Mizuki gonna kill me?

"We're here."

Wow...

"Nice place, huh?"

I nodded repeatedly in response. We're in a large empty space in the middle of the forest. It's like an ecotone but there's only land and no marsh. It's peaceful here and the air feels cool.

"You know... I've always wanted to ask you something about your cosplays," I admitted out of the blue.

"What is it?" she asked.

"I noticed a pattern in the characters you portray. Every single one of them... died."

She paused before lowering her head and grinning to herself. Her smile gives off a different vibe. It's not the same as the smile she always wore before. It feels kind of... melancholic for some reason.

"So, you've noticed..."

"You're not dying, are you?" I asked seriously to which she let out a chuckle.

"Of course not, silly! We're not in a movie, you know?"

"Then explain why you always portray dead characters."

"You might think it's pathetic but... I portray anime characters that died because I want to give fans a chance to see them again. You know, without replaying the anime itself. I'm a fan too and there are a bunch of dead anime characters that I would love to see in action again," she explained. "Lame, right?" she asked, pouting.

"I don't think so... I think it's nice how you think for everyone and grant them their wish. You're a good person, Mizuki."

She gave me a smile and this time, I could feel the sincerity behind it. It's nothing but a real, genuine smile.

"The moon is beautiful," she said while gazing at the moon.

I looked at her as the moonlight revealed her sparkling brown eyes. Her hair, slightly moving because of the cold, blowing wind and her lips showing a hint of a smile.

How can someone be so... precious?

"Yes... it is."

———

We were both scolded by Mr. Galicia when we got back. I expected Sora to yell at me for stealing his sister but instead of doing that, he thanked me for getting Mizuki home in one piece.

After that incident, we often spend time together at Mizuki's secret hideout. Ever since that day, she's also been acting strange. One day wouldn't pass without her uttering the words "The moon is beautiful."

At first, I didn't pay that much attention to it but I realized that Mizuki is a girl of mystery. She's a woman full of surprises and I got suspicious that maybe this is another one of her plays.

Eventually, I started digging out information and it didn't take me long to uncover the true meaning behind her words.

Mizuki, you sly beauty!

A few more months passed and it is now November. Mizuki and I are on our way home from the orphanage where I was raised.

This is the first time I brought her there because I didn't have the courage to ask her before. She's also the first person I took there. Not even Drew has been to the place I call home.

At first, the kids were baffled. They never expected me to bring someone with me since I always come alone. They didn't even want to get close to Mizuki because they said Mizuki looks rich and she might get mad if filthy kids like them come near her.

They quickly swallowed their words when Mizuki herself voluntarily played with them. Everyone came to like Mizuki in such a short amount of time that when the time came that we had to go home, they were begging us to stay for a little longer.

We've now reached Mizuki's house. As per usual, I would take her home right after we hung out to ensure her safety.

"Like before, the moon is still beautiful," she said.

Here goes her line...

"I now know what you mean by that," I proudly told her with my head held high.

Her eyes slightly widened and she got fidgety. "Huh?"

"In English, Mizuki means 'beautiful moon', right? For God's sake, Mizuki! You've been telling me how beautiful you are daily for the past few months! I'm already well-aware of your captivating visual, okay? You don't have to remind me everyday," I snickered.

A smile creeped up to her face. "I've been found out, huh?"

We laughed together and probably wouldn't have stopped if it weren't for her dad. Mr. Galicia is a strict man and he always glares at me. It's not a nasty look like our librarian's but it's still terrifying and bestows pressure upon me.

"I'll get going."

"Sure, sure. Thanks for taking me home. Be careful on your way back to your dorm, okay?" she reminded me before waving me goodbye and entering their house.

The next day, I went to the library to see Mizuki just like I always do. It has become a habit now.

"You're here again," she greeted.

"You always say that but you never make me leave anyway," I said in response.

"That's because I don't want you to, silly," she giggled. "I'm a little busy today so I can't accompany you."

"No sweat. Do you need help?"

"Nope, I'm good," she answered when she suddenly paused. "On second thought, I have a task for you."

"What is it?"

"I'm supposed to return a book here but I left it in my bag. Could you please get it for me?" she asked.

"Of course. Where is it?"

"Umm... in my locker..."

...that's quite some distance from here.

"Give me your keys. Should I bring your bag too or just the book?"

"Just the book please," she answered as she handed me her locker's key.

"I'll be right back."

I walked from the library to building B where Mizuki's locker is located. I opened her locker using the key she gave me and... wow, that's a lot of bags. Is this a normal girl thing?

There are three bags stashed inside her locker, along with her textbooks and other supplies. Which bag was she referring to? Had I known the amount of bags inside, I would've asked before coming here.

I took the bag she uses daily and opened it but there was not a single book inside. I hung it back in the locker before taking the second bag. I opened it and what I saw deeply shocked me.

What on earth...? Pill? Syringes, bottles, tablets... heaps and heaps of medicine!

I opened the third bag and more medicine came into sight.

Why does she have so many pills? What the hell are these for?

"Tanner! Sorry, I didn't know I already brought the book with m—"

I turned towards her and she saw me holding the pills and even syringes from her bag.

"Tanner..."

"Are you a drug dealer?" I tried to ask jokingly as an attempt to make light of the situation but my tone came out as serious.

Her not knowing what to say vexed me even more. I numbed up and unconsciously dropped her bag on the floor before walking away. She tried calling out for me and even chased after me but she eventually gave up.

Why would she hide this kind of issue from me? I thought we've gotten closer. I really thought she depended on me even a little. Was it just me?

———

It's been one week since Mizuki and I last talked. She's still making an effort and approaching me but I've done nothing but brush her aside.

She always messages me but I can't muster enough courage to type up a reply. She hasn't changed. Even though I told her that she doesn't need to remind me how gorgeous she is, she still does so everyday.

Every single night, she never failed to tell me how beautiful the moon is.

Though her messages still makes me feel butterflies in my stomach, I'm still resisting myself from talking to her. My thoughts are all jumbled up and confused. I know I've chosen a cowardly path but I'm afraid of saying something I don't mean.

"Tanner! Tanner, get out of the bathroom!" yelled Drew.

Why is he back so soon? I thought he still has class at this hour?

I splashed my face with water before exiting the bathroom like Drew demanded. Drew's exhausted figure greeted my eyes. He's sweating and it's clear he ran all the way here to our dorm.

"What's the matter?" I asked.

"Mizuki collapsed! She fainted!"

"What?!"

"I saw her this morning looking pale so I asked her if she was sick but she told me she's fine so I just brushed it off. While we were on our way to our next class, she suddenly blacked out and fell down the stai—"

I didn't even wait for Drew to finish explaining and just dashed to the infirmary. I slammed the door open and the nurse on duty was startled "Was Mizuki Galicia taken here?" I asked, panting

"Young man, are you o—"

"Was she?!" I repeated the question.

"The student that fell down the stairs? She's already at the hos—"

"Which hospital?"

"Our university's—"

"Thanks!"

I know she'll think I'm rude and disrespectful for not letting her finish her sentence even once but I'm too focused on Mizuki to even care. I need to see her!

I went straight to the emergency room and asked where Mizuki was and they told me she was already taken to a private room.

I asked for her room number and I sprinted the moment the nurse answered. I didn't even bother knocking and just swung the door open.

"Tanner?" Mizuki asked, surprised.

She looks so... pale. Her head is covered with bandages but I could still see traces of Mizuki's blood in it.

"Don't you know how to knock?" asked Mr. Galicia with a strict tone.

I didn't realize that Mizuki wasn't alone and her parents were also in the room.

"We'll leave you two alone," said Mrs. Galicia.

"What?! No! I'm not leaving my daughter alone here!" Mr. Galicia resisted.

"あなた!" Mrs. Galicia's voice echoed in the room.

Mizuki's father snarled before leaving the hospital room against his will. Mrs. Galicia shook her head before facing me. "Take good care of our daughter," she said before leaving and closing the door behind her.

I walked towards Mizuki and stood beside her bed. She refused to look at me and just kept looking down.

"I already know you're sick so please stop hiding your face. How bad is it?"

"It's not that bad. I'm oka—"

"Just..." I sighed "...just tell me the truth. You're not... going to die yet, are you?"

Silence... and then came... sobbing.

No... please, no. Stop crying and tell me it's not true. Stop crying and tell me we can still go back to your secret hideout. Stop crying and keep telling me how beautiful the moon is every night.

Please... don't do this to me...

"I'm sorry..."

I felt my strength leave my legs which made me kneel. My tears dropped, along with Mizuki's soft whimpers.

"You told me you weren't dying yet, didn't you? You made it seem like you're as healthy as a horse. You liar..."

———

I visited Mizuki at the hospital everyday. The visits were frequently short due to my busy schedule but a day wouldn't pass without me seeing her lovely face.

Little by little, Mizuki's cheerful self came back. She still can't leave the hospital but she keeps showing her doctor her progressive recovery and that she is now full of life and energy.

"Tanner, I have good news!" she announced the moment I entered her room.

I walked over to her and sat down at the chair placed beside her bed before responding. "What is it?"

"According to my doctor, I'm healthy enough to undergo surgery! My operation is already scheduled for Friday, next week!"

"Really?! That's great! You can finally get out of this hospital room!" I exclaimed.

"I know! Tan, you better take me out on a date when that happens! Oh, better yet, let's have a picnic at our secret hideout!"

"Our?"

"Yes, our, you silly! I took you there and welcomed you with open arms so it's your hideout too! You're so oblivious!"

I see... she's finally gonna get discharged. Her health will recover and we'll still have a lifetime ahead of us. This time, I'll make sure we spend it together. I know that's what she wants too.

"Do you remember the time you told me you want to see me again in the next convention? That's still gonna happen, right? Let's attend together next year. I'll help with your cosplay."

"Hey, you cosplay too! Let's do Misaki and Usui!"

"I'm not letting you wear a maid outfit in public."

"See, you're already in character!" she laughed. "What, are you gonna leave a kiss mark on me too just like what Usui did to Misaki to prevent other people from seeing her in a bikini? Well, aren't you overprotective!" she joked, still laughing.

"I might."

She paused. "Tan, you're not my boyfriend... yet. Confess then who knows, maybe I'll consider it."

"Consider? That's funny," I chuckled.

"I'm not joking! You need to make my heart go all ドキドキ!"

Romaji: doki doki
Translation: beat rapidly due to excitement or exhilaration

"Don't I already do that? I'm sure your heart beats fast when you see me," I jokingly stated.

"...you're being unfair. Try again."

No matter how enthusiastic she acts, I still can't get this feeling out of my chest. The feeling that... I'll be left alone by her. The feeling that she'll still leave me.

"Promise me."

"Promise you what?" she asked.

"Promise me you'll live."

She stared at me with a confused look for a few seconds before smiling widely. "I already mentioned my operation, right?"

"Just promise me."

"Alright alright! I, Mizuki Galicia, promise to survive and live a happy life! With you, perhaps?" she laughed at her last comment.

"Yeah, do that," I said with a smug look on my face.

She displayed a look of shock mixed with amusement.

"I said, survive and live. After that, we'll grow old together," I clarified.

"Hey! I just told you to stop being unfair! Just confess to me already!"

"Why don't you confess?"

"Do I really have to? I'm always the one who initiates a date anyway!"

"Well, why do I have to? I'm openly expressing my love too, you know?"

"Still! I want a confession!"

"You just got one. What I said was a confession."

"Nuh-uh, I want a Japanese confession!"

She's so adorable...

"But I'm not Japanese."

"I am! So, I want a Japanese confession! Tell me you love me in Japanese."

"I can't speak Japanese though."

"Oh, Tanner Dela Vega and his excuses! I'm sure your knowledge from watching anime is more than enough but if that's insufficient for you, then go do some research."

I laughed. "Alright, what the beautiful moon wants, the beautiful moon gets."

"Exactly! The beautiful moon desires Mister Tanner Dela Vega's heartfelt confession so work on it!"

I just chuckled at her remark. After chatting for a bit, I left to go to work.

This is our everyday routine. I would attend classes in the morning, go home to change and get my uniform for work, pay a visit to Mizuki, and then go to work. Sometimes, I would do my project after work but when it's something that doesn't take long, I do it while spending time with Mizuki.

My time with her is very limited since I have a tight schedule but it's as clear as day that my time for her never drops to zero. No matter how busy I am, I still find the time to hang out with her. My day just feels so empty without at least seeing her.

Just a few more days before her big operation. I've already been there before I went to work my shift but while on my way home, I suddenly missed her so I turned back and took a jeep to the hospital.

Why is her room open? Did Sora forget to close the door again? I swear, that kid never learns.

"Mizu—"

"Miss Galicia! Miss Galicia, can you hear me? Get a hold of yourself! Miss Galicia!"

What's... going on?

Nurses shoved me and told me to not stand in the way. I couldn't see Mizuki since doctors and nurses were surrounding her.

What are they doing to her?

"Sir, please get out of the way!"

Mizuki...

———

It's been two weeks since that incident. I never went back due to fear. Fear of witnessing that kind of situation again and most especially, fear of seeing an empty hospital room... one without a bright and cheerful Mizuki.

My fear and anxiety has not subsided but I did gather the courage to visit her again. Her mother called me and told me to come a couple days ago but at the time, I just couldn't. It's alright though since now, I'm heading there.

I arrived at my destination and there she was...

I held the flowers I bought for her tightly in my hand as I walked over to her. As I looked at her in front of me, the tears I've been trying to bottle inside of me finally gushed out.

"You broke your promise."

My knees weakened and my legs gave in when I read her name written on the tombstone.

In the end, you still left me. Why must you be so cruel?

The sun set and night has fallen, yet I haven't advanced from my previous position. I'm still waiting for her voice to call out, saying that this is all a bad prank.

What about doing a couple cosplay in the next convention? What happened to living a happy life and growing old with me? Come on, please? We haven't fulfilled those promises yet. Come back to me...

"Tanner, you have to go home."

I slowly turned and a tall figure came into sight. It's Mr. Galicia, Mizuki's father. I had no will to even think of an answer so I just let my head hang low.

"Let her go, Tanner. She's gone... Mizuki's already reached her limit."

"I can't... I want her back," I replied, my voice cracking in the process. "We promised to grow old together, sir..."

"Get in the car. I'll drive you home. I'm sure Mizuki wouldn't want you to stay here forever."

Defeated, I composed myself and came with Mr. Galicia. He took me to the university but before I could pass the gate, he called out. I walked back to the car and he handed me a small envelope through the car window.

"Mizuki told me to give you this."

A letter?

"The doctor told me that Mizuki called out your name a couple times before completely going into an eternal slumber. She was looking for you... but you weren't there."

Again, my tears started to escape my eyes. Mr. Galicia got out of the car and gave me a hug to comfort me.

"Tanner, thank you for making my daughter happy."

———

I slowly opened the door to our dorm room before quietly entering. I tip-toed to the balcony with the envelope to avoid waking Drew up. I closed the balcony door and inhaled the blowing cool air.

The moon is shining so bright... yet no one tells me how beautiful it is anymore.

I sat down and opened the envelope I was handed. Inside is a letter and the keychain Mizuki dropped before. I held the keychain close to my heart before reminiscing about the past.

I guess we were always within each other's grasp without knowing it.

I unfolded the piece of paper and her familiar handwriting came into sight. I've always thought her penmanship is neat and organized unlike mine.

———

Hi, Tanner! How are you doing? You're probably sad, huh? Of course you are... after all, I broke my promise to you. To tell you the truth, the doctor never said anything about the surgery. I lied about that. It was because I could already feel my strength leaving my body. I didn't want to live my last days in sorrow, you know?

I'm sorry for deceiving you. I really am. Ever since the time we met at the library, I've been doing nothing but lie to you. I'm such a big liar, aren't I? But you see, those lies don't even compare to the biggest one I've told.

Do you remember the time you guessed the reason why I always tell you how beautiful the moon is? I sulked because I've been found out, remember that? That was an act too.

I got so nervous when you said you knew because I thought you actually figured out the meaning behind those words. If you translate "the moon is beautiful" to Japanese, you would get "月が綺麗" which is read as "tsuki ga kirei."

In Japan, when you hear those words, it doesn't always mean that the moon is beautiful. Saying those words is a way to tell someone you love them.

I feel so sly for choosing that way of telling you how much I love you. I'm a smart one, aren't I?

At first, I really did want to befriend you because I thought you were a nice person. And I was right. You really were. But the closer we got, the blurrier the line separating friendship and love became.

When my family took a trip to Japan, I collapsed. That was the time when I couldn't reply to your messages. That was also the time I realized that I don't see you as just a friend anymore. I crossed the line... and I'm happy I did.

When we got back to the Philippines, I really wanted to tell you how I felt but I chickened out. I suppose I did tell you my feelings but it was in a way you wouldn't understand.

Is it okay for me to tell you how I feel now? I want to say it directly without using words you wouldn't understand. It's okay, right? Ah, whatever! I'd still say it even if you say no.

Tanner Dela Vega, from the bottom of my heart, I love you so much.

-Your beautiful moon

———

Seriously... how big of a liar are you? You tell me I'm unfair but who's unfair now? You didn't even wait for my Japanese confession you so deeply wanted. Stupid moon... but you know what? I agree with you.

You're right, Mizuki. The moon really is beautiful.
