Yn's POV
"Adam, hey" I say as I bump into him in the lobby of the district.
"Hey, Yn. What's up" Adam asked and gave me a small hug.
"Well, I'm longer being framed for murdering Kelton, and it is now my first case since then" I say.
"Oh yeah. Kevin's undercover case, right" Adam asked.
"You spoke to Voight" I question.
"Yeah. I just needed his opinion on something. Anyways, I should get going. I don't want to stop you from getting to work" Adam said.
"All right. I'll talk to you later" I say.
Walking up the stairs made me feel great. Working for this unit was probably the best thing to ever happen to me, plus, I met Jay through the unit, which was even better. When I stepped foot into the bullpen, Hailey was the first one to spot me. Both of us smiled at each other at the same time, and I ran over to her, leading her to pull me into the biggest hug imaginable.
"I'm so glad you're back" Hailey said.
"Me too. I missed you" I say.
"Um, what about the rest of us" Jay asked and gestured to him, Kevin, and Kim.
"I missed all of you, but mostly Hailey" I say and give my best friend a side hug.
"All right. Before we move on, you have been updated on the Antonio thing, right" Kevin asked me.
"Yeah. Kim and I talked about it the other day" I answer.
Antonio was gone. After everything that had happened with him and Adam and the whole investigation, he took off, leaving only his badge behind at his apartment. Word was he moved down to Puerto Rico where his sister, Gabby, had moved only a few years prior.
"All right, guys. What do we got" Voight asked as he walked out of his office.
"I talked to Homicide about the Smokey thing. It turns out he's a high ranking guy in Darius Walker's organization" Hailey said.
"Any suspects" Voight asked.
"Nothing real yet. All we know is two male Latinos were spotted near the crime scene a few minutes after it happened" Hailey spoke.
"Smokey had 20 grand on him, which means he knew the sellers" Kevin added. "He probably did business with them before. Otherwise he wouldn't have had that much money on him."
"So it's an inside job. The seller steals the cash and keeps the product. It wouldn't be the first time we've seen that happen" Voight said.
"No, but it's the first time it's happened to somebody working for Darius Walker" Kim pointed out.
"Well, the good news is it does open up an angle for us. Look, if we know the Latin Players were behind this, you can be damn sure Darius Walker knows too. That means he's going to be looking for a new supplier. Jay, I want you to go under as that supplier" Voight declared.
"Sounds good" Jay replied.
..........................................
"Hey. What's going on? We've been waiting for you for like 10 minutes" I tell Kevin as he met up with Jay, Hailey, and I in an alleyway.
"Sorry. I just talked to Andre. Walker's not doing the deal with you" Kevin informed Jay.
"I'm offended" Jay said.
"Well, he wasn't feeling it, and Walker doesn't talk about it" Kevin explained.
"Units in the 7th District and units on the citywide, we're getting multiple calls of shots fired at 1221 South 58th Street" a dispatcher said over Jay's radio.
"That's like three blocks away. Let's roll" Hailey said.
"All right, stay here with Yn. Don't blow your cover" Jay told Kevin.
A few minutes later, I received a text from Jay. He said that he needed Kevin and I to meet up with him and Hailey at the building they had gone to inspect. When we arrived, the rest of Intelligence was there already.
"Our two vics are Luis Tores and Benji Rodriguez, and our girl is Gloria Romero. She's Benji's girlfriend. It took some persuading, but she's confirmed that they're Latin Players" Hailey told us.
"Did she see anything" Voight asked.
"No, she said she was hanging out with her friends. She went on a cigarette run, and when she came back, she heard the shots, so she ran and hid. She said she heard a male voice say, 'This is for Smokey'" Jay noted.
"All right, so Darius is looking at revenge for Smokey. Is that what we're thinking" Voight implored.
"It makes sense. You kill one of mine, I kill two of yours" Kim stated.
"All right, well, somebody had to see something. The shooter didn't just fall from the sky. Let's dig in. Find witnesses and surveillance cameras. Oh, and Yn, I need you to do something for me" Voight said.
Voight gave me the address of a park and explained everything to me. Apparently, Adam had tackled a kid there for selling drugs, which was not a good thing considering he didn't have police powers anymore. When I got to the park, there were patrol officers escorting the kid away.
"I was just trying to help. He's out here selling product in front of children and parents. You know? It's why I restrained him and I called patrol" Adam said to me.
"You punched him in the face and threw him on the ground" I point out.
"Hold on, he swung at me first" Adam clarified.
"As much as it pains me to say this, Adam, you're off the job. You don't have the authority to do this anymore" I say.
"Yn, he's out here just slinging crack in the broad daylight" Adam told me.
"It doesn't matter" I say.
"What do you mean it doesn't matter? Of course it matters" Adam objected.
"You can't get involved in things like this, Adam. Not anymore, not until your stuff gets resolved. Look, have you been drinking" I ask.
"No. I'm fine" Adam stated.
"All right, well, I've got a case to work on, so lets get you home. Come on" I say.
................................................
"I found a witness who lives nearby. She saw a young black male. Skinny, 5'10, running from the back of the building, and she said she'll do an ID once we have an offender in custody" Kim said.
"Okay, good. What about you two" Voight asked Jay and Hailey.
"Well, we got some video from an auto part shop down the street from the abandoned building. A blue Ford Taurus, pulls up. It's got a dent in the side panel. Now, it idles in front of the building, and then when the shots go off at 3:29, it just takes off" Jay informed us.
"All right, did you run that plate" Voight questioned.
"Yeah, it's a dummy. It came back empty" Hailey said.
"So if the car was idling when the shots were fired, it means the driver's not the shooter, or it could be the getaway driver. All right, let's find that blue Taurus, fast. Talk to Kevin. Get him up to speed" Voight said.
"Um, Sarge, can I talk to you" I ask.
"Yeah, what's up" Voight asked and led me into his office.
"I just talked to Adam, and I'm worried" I admit.
"I'm working on it" Voight assured me.
"Work harder, Sarge. As tough as Adam is, he is not going to last a month on the inside. Adam is good police. I would know since he's my partner. And I don't want him ending up like Antonio, who quit the force because of his drug problem, or Erin who left for personal reasons. I especially don't want him to end up like Al. Al had decades more than Adam on the job, but the people inside won't care about how long Adam's been a cop. As soon as they hear he's police, he's done for. I can't lose someone else, Sarge. I just can't. So please, make sure he gets out of this mess" I say.
"I'm doing everything I can for him, Yn. Everything" Voight said.
We kept digging for information, including what we knew about Walker's known associates. If there was some way we could get Darius for even the smallest of crimes, we were going to do it. Soon, our hard work paid off, because after a bit of searching, we found the owner of our Blue Taurus.
"The more we dig into our bartender, Nina Rodriguez, the less we know. Plates are fictitious, no DL, no criminal info" Kim shared.
"We know she rented a studio apartment three months ago, and is paying cash for it" Hailey added.
"So it could be tips. It could also be drug money" I state.
"Well, what do you think, Kev? Is she part of Walker's drug crew" Voight asked.
"I'm not sure, but it's possible" Kevin admitted.
"The real question is, is she the shooter, the getaway driver, or is someone just using her car" Jay said.
"Let's find out. Put some pressure on her. See if you can catch her dirty in a drug deal and get her to flip on Walker" Voight said.
Kevin and Jay set up a deal with Nina and her partner Trey, and they were currently doing a meet in an abandoned warehouse. The rest of us were waiting around outside, and when two guys rolled up with guns, things took a turn. Everyone ran inside the building, and we found that Nina and Trey had their guns pointed at Jay and Kevin while Jay and Kevin had their guns pointed at Nina, Trey, and the new guys who walked in. There was a lot of shouting and commotion going on, and eventually, Voight got everyone to quiet down.
"Hey, everybody shut up! Shut up" Voight shouted. "I'm a cop! My button's in my pocket. I'm Raul Acosta, assigned to Squad E66, long-term investigations. My Commander is Marty Belmont" one of the guys said.
"It's legit" Hailey said as she looked at his badge.
As soon as everyone had lowered their weapons, I ran over to Jay, launching myself into his arms. In situations like these, it was hard not to worry about him, and it was vice versa for Jay. That's why it's difficult for people who are together romantically to work with one another in the workplace.
"I'm fine, Yn. I promise" Jay told me.
"I know. I just had to check for myself" I say.
........................................
"All right, I just brought the deputy chief up to speed. Per his orders, we are joining forces. Walker remains the priority target. All right, Vanessa, you've got the best relationship with this guy. Anything you can tell us about this recent double homicide" Voight asked the woman who we thought was named Nina.
"No, all I heard was him mention the address. That's it" Vanessa answered.
"What about where he does most of his business? Can you plant a wire in that back office" Kevin asked.
"Yeah. I can do that" Vanessa said.
Vanessa did her job, and she did her job well. Because she planted a bug, we were able to pick up Darius Walker and the guys he was doing a deal with. Now, it was time to get home and relax. At our apartment, Jay was cooking dinner while I was playing with Chief on the floor of our living room.
"You are such a good boy" I tell Chief and rub his head.
Chief barked happily and wagged his tail, jumping onto my lap. I laughed as he pushed me over and attempted to try and lick my face. However, he was unsuccessful.
"Dinner's ready" Jay called out from the kitchen.
I gently pushed Chief off of me and stood up, stretching out my back. Then, I walked over to the kitchen. Jay was setting up the table when I walked over, and I smiled and took a seat.
"I'm thinking tonight after dinner we could just relax in bed. I'm exhausted after this case. You know, taking one case off really does affect performance" I say.
"I will definitely we taking you up on that offer. Maybe we can get some actual sleep tonight" Jay said.
"Yeah. Maybe" I say.
