Yn's POV
"Jay, can you get the cupcakes out of the oven while I'm preparing the frosting" I ask.
"Sure thing, babe" Jay said and walked over to the oven.
Jay and I were bored at home, and both of us had a sweet tooth, so we figured we'd make some cupcakes together. We had never really cooked food together, so this was also the time to explore some fun things we could do every now and then. As I was mixing the icing, Jay swooped in and swiped some icing with his finger.
"Jay! That's for the cupcakes" I say.
"I know, but I just couldn't help myself" Jay admitted.
At that moment, I had the best idea ever. I took the whisk out of the bowl, with icing dripping from it, and flicked it at Jay. The icing from the whisk flew and then hit Jay right in the middle of his chest. For a second, Jay stood there in shock. However, a smirk soon made it's way onto his face. Before I could react, Jay scooped some icing from the bowl onto his hand and swiped it across my face, leaving a huge icing trail.
"Jay" I shriek.
"You started it" Jay said.
I scoffed at him, grabbing some more icing from the bowl. This man was definitely going to regret what he said. With that being said, I smashed my palmful of icing on his face, getting it all over his nose and mouth. That's when a full on icing war began, and we started flinging icing at each other. However, the war soon stopped because Jay closed the distance between us by pressing his lips to mine, getting more icing on my face. Jay wrapped his arms around my waist, and I rested my hands against his biceps. The icing from both of our hands got all over each other, and now we were both covered with icing.
"Look at this mess" I say and glance around at the kitchen where icing was sitting upon practically every surface.
"How about we clean this up real fast, and then we head to the shower" Jay suggested.
"I like the way you think. Lets do it" I say.
The morning after the icing war, Jay and I had to go to work because we had a new case. Don't get me wrong, I loved my job. Getting to protect the city of Chicago from criminals was amazing. But sometimes I just wanted to spend a few days with my family or boyfriend without having to get called into work.
"Okay, this is the four-block section controlled by a new young faction of the GPs, but to say control is really an overstatement" Jay said.
"Yeah, these kids are wild" Kevin said.
"They don't observe any rules or bylaws" Kim added.
"Any of these young guns stand out from the crowd, make a name for himself" Voight asked.
"No, but there's a lot of arrests for possession" Adam replied.
"All right, so follow that. Listen. If there's kids out there dealing drugs, that means someone out there is controlling it somewhere. I mean, talk to gangs. Use what intel they've got" Voight spoke.
"I reached out to a few of my CIs. If we're banking on the drug angle, they should have a name" Antonio said.
"Okay, good. But let's move fast. We've got to find a kid who can sit down with Eddie Brackton before this wave gets ahead of us" Voight said.
That night, we had Eddie Braxton and Eric Wilson, the shot caller for the young GPs, meet up at a disclosed location. Voight and Jay were inside with them while Hailey and I were standing watch out front. Out of nowhere, someone started shooting at us, so Hailey and I had no choice but to drop to the ground. As soon as the shooting stopped, Voight came outside.
"You guys good? Anybody hit" Voight asked.
"Yeah, no, we're all good. We were pinned down. We didn't have eyes" Hailey said.
"Help me! Help" a women shouted from a block away.
"You guys go help over there. I'll stay here" I say.
"Are you sure" Hailey asked me.
"I'll be fine. Go" I say.
Hailey nodded and took off with Voight down the street. As soon as they left, I walked inside the building and over to Jay.
"Are you all right" I ask him.
"Yeah. I'm fine" Jay said.
........................................
"Boss, the young GPs are taking credit for the shooting. I've got a bunch of social media posts here. Idiots rapping about shooting up the barber shop. Definitely a retaliation hit. There's nothing specific, though. We can't ID the actual shooter yet" Adam said.
"And Eric" Voight asked.
"He's claiming he has no name and that no one's talking to him" I respond.
"The shooter's probably just some wannabe banger looking for attention" Jay said.
"But all wannabe bangers are looking for attention. That's the problem" Kevin said.
"Ballistics came back. The gun used was a MAC-10, matches an unsolved homicide. I talked to Gangs. They don't have any suspects" Kim informed us.
"Hey, I may have something. POD grabbed an SUV speeding west two blocks from the barber shop about a minute after the shots were fired. SUV's registered to an Isaiah Young" Hailey said.
"Gang affiliation" Voight asked.
"Young GPs" Hailey replied.
"All right. Bring his ass in" Voight said.
Isaiah said that the only reason he was speeding away was because he heard the shots and didn't want to get involved. So, Hailey headed over to Alyssa's house, the sister of the woman who had been killed, and talked to her. Apparently, she saw the guy, and she even gave us a description.
"I think this is him. It's the only bus Alyssa could have had eyes on at that hour. But the kid never looks up" Antonio explained.
"And he paid with cash so we can't track a Ventra card" Kevin added.
"I've been looking into the clothes he was wearing, but they're pretty unspecific" Jay said.
"Everything about him is. He rode the bus two stops so I'm trying to track down the other passengers, but chances are they didn't notice him either" I say.
"We got a clear shot of his phone" Voight asked.
"No, but he's a young kid, so I'm guessing he's on social media" Kim responded.
"Run it with CPIC" Voight said.
CPIC got a hit on the social media account in the bus camera, and the profile was registered to Lamar Cook. Alyssa gave us a positive ID on Cook, so we went to snatch him up from where he stayed. There were about 15 other people there, including Eric Wilson, who knew who the shooter was the whole time. So, we brought everyone down to the station. After talking to Eric for a bit, he finally gave us Lamar's location, and we were able to bring him down to the district where we arrested him.
Back at the district, as a few of us were packing up, Jay walked into the bullpen with a tablet in his hand. He also had a look on his face that told me something was wrong.
"Guys, you've got to see this. Kelton just released a statement to the press" Jay said and played the video.
"Thanks to the CPD, Alderman Price, and the good men and women of Ward 22, we now have a suspect in custody. This truly was a team effort, an excellent demonstration of what kind of a city Chicago really is, as evidenced by the incredible courage of one citizen who came forward and identified the shooter. Now there are some people who love to say that the African-American community doesn't trust the CPD, doesn't respect the CPD. But if this case is any indication, I would say that that is a gross exaggeration. Because without the support, without the cooperation of the residents of Ward 22 and our brave witness, we never could have made an arrest like this. And that's a fact" Kelton said.
"That son of a bitch. He just put a target on our witness" I say.
That night, at the apartment, Jay was watching a hockey game in the living room while I was re-making the cupcakes. As soon as both the cupcakes and the icing were done, and I had the cupcakes assembled, I brought one over to Jay.
"Holy shit" Jay said after taking a bite. "These are really good. Where'd you learn how to bake?"
"My mom taught me. But I only know how to bake cupcakes. I'm way better at cooking" I say and situate my legs over Jay's lap.
"Who knew you had so many talents" Jay said with a smile.
"All right. I'm heading to bed. I am exhausted, and right now, I need at least 10 hours of sleep" I say and stand up.
"Okay. I'll join you once the game is over" Jay said.
"I'll be waiting. See you in bed" I say.
