episode 2: THE LUCKY COMPASS
part 1
john b had went to take the tanks back to cameron's boat and the others stayed behind at the chateau. kie was tuning her ukulele, pope was studying, of course. and jj and ren were in the spare room talking about stuff, when jj brought up the topic of them,
"have you thought about what we are gonna tell the others?" he asked
"honestly, i don't know, on one hand i really want to tell them, but on the other hand, what about the rule?" she said, john b had created the rule as a way of keeping the pogues from dating one another, because if they broke up it would break up the whole group, hence: no-pogue-on-pogue-macking.
"to be honest i don't think it's kie and pope we have to worry about," he was right, john b would be the one to disapprove.
"oh god. your right, should we just tell kie and pope now?" she asked
"i think so," he said and pulled her out.
"hey guys, we uh, we have something to tell you," jj said making their heads turn to them,
"so me and jj are kind of, well," ren started before jj cut her off,
"me and ren are dating!" he said proudly.
"yeah, what he said," ren sighed knowing by the looks of their faces they didn't seem happy.
"well, i uh i think it's great you guys!" kie said and hugged ren.
"yeah! but what about john b? and the rule?" pope asked
"screw the rules!" ren said
"okay but you better tell john b before he walks in on you two and finds out that way," pope said which made jj smirk but ren send him a glare.
"don't worry pope, we will," jj said and pulled ren into a hug, she instantly kissed him,
"ok gross guys, stop!" pope yelled.
they all ended up going back to their own places, but ren went with jj to his house.
it was about an hour later when they walked back to john b's place and saw a notice from DCS on the door,
"hey watch this," jj said and pulled the girl down.
jj banger on the door and yelled in a little bit of a deep voice,
"DCS i know you're in there!"
jj then jumped at the window where john b was lying and scared him,
then jj started laughing like a maniac while taking about john b's face, while ren just sighed and walked in.
they decided to talk to miss lana about the compass to see if she knew anything more than they did.
"i don't understand why you don't at least try with kiara, man. she clearly likes you!" jj went on and on about this.
"she's like 'oh john b'" he tried to mimic kiara but failed terribly.
"is that what she does?" john b questioned sarcastically,
"she was sketching about you diving and then she kissed you!" ren agreed
"she kissed me on the cheek," he corrected,
"doesn't matter dude, a kiss is a kiss." ren said
"it's not like we were making out,"
"low hanging fruit bro. don't pretend you don't notice, i see it in your eyes. and your like 'i kinda like that' and then you start blushing, and shit." jj said
"i blush?" john b asked
"hell yeah bro! all the time!" ren hit the back of his seat.
jj reaches for the compass that was on the dashboard of the car. but john b quickly yelled at him to put it back, to which he didn't listen.
"i'm just looking bro!" jj yelled
"dude chill," ren agreed
"i gotta admit, your fathers compass in scooters boat, that's freaky," jj admitted
"yeah and that's why we're going to talk to miss lana, figure this whole thing out," john b said
"yeah cause i'm sure she would just love to talk to us, it's not like her husband just drowned or anything," ren said from behind the two.
once they arrived jj let ren out and she got out and walked closer to the house with the two boys,
"you know what this house looks like?" john b asked.
"whoever lives here smokes too much weed," jj answered.
"so our house jj?" ren asked.
as they got closer they could hear yelling, glass smashing and crashing.
"bullshit!" they heard from the house
"maybe we should come back," jj said
ren shushed him and kept walking closer.
"tell me where it is!" a mans voice was yelling from inside, then a scream was heard, followed by miss lana yelling,
"you're hurting me!"
"holy fuck," ren whispered and ran up to the house walls, the two boys following suit.
jj started to panic and john b and ren just shushed him,
she grabbed hold of jj's hand and kissed it,
"calm down," she whispered
"where is it lana?!" the man yells again , you can hear crashing and then what looks like dried paint falls from above them.
"is that paint?" jj asked
"yes," ren answered getting it out of her hair.
"let's get the hell outta here man," another man said to him.
john b walked in front of the two and towards the front of the corner. he quickly turned back around,
"shut up, shut up." he said
they peered over the corner to see the boys that shot at us,
"dude! those are the guys that shot at us," jj said
"okay man now i think we should go," ren said to john b,
"shut up!" he whisper yelled.
as the two men drove off, the three of them ran into the house, they looked around and saw, glass smashed, and it was a mess!
they looked over to the bathroom to see miss lana sitting on the floor sobbing,
"holy fuck!" ren ran over to the woman,
"miss lana, are- are you okay?" she asked,
"call the sheriffs department," john b said to jj, but miss lana quickly refused,
"no! no cops please,"
"mhm that's not good, let's go," he pulled up ren who quickly pushed him off.
"what do you know about these guys?" john b asked her.
"they, they were looking for something," she sobbed
john b pulled out the compass and showed her,
"does this have anything to do with it?" he asked. and by her face dropping so did ren's heart.
"this was my fathers and scooter had it. why?" john b asked
"scooter didn't have it, okay? you can't tell anybody you have that!" she yelled at him trying to get him out of her house as jj and ren did too.
"dude lets go! now!" ren yelled and finally got him out.
he scoffed and got into the van, ren sent jj a worried look to which jj just followed john b into the van, the van was silence on the way back to the chateau.
kie and pope had arrived and the group sat in the porch, jj was explaining the story, exaggerating a lot.
"and then we were right outside like this," he leant up against the wall. "and all we hear is just bam! bam! bam! knocking paint off the wall, g! from the inside! like- hold on wait look at this shit," he walked over to kie and pope and ruffled his hair making not paint but dandruff fall out.
"that's dandruff, disgusting," joe wiped it off her legs as jj continues.
"look at all that? all right, that's paint," jj says
"at that point i was just like... i'm waiting for death," jj added
"your so over exaggerating the story," ren said
"oh okay so you saw the guys that shot at us right?" pope asked to which they all said yes.
"did you get a good discription of them?" pope asked again.
"yeah anything?" kie asked
"like anything we can bring to a police report?"
"burly," jj answered simply.
"burly?" pope asked
"yeah, you know like-" jj started before kie cut him off
"that's not very helpful," kie said
"well what were we supposed to do? pull out our phones and take pictures?!" ren yelled.
"yeah! and like the type of guy at mine and ren's garage," he pointed to her. "i mean you guys know they made cargo hide for drug smugglers," ren added
"yeah. yes. no, we know," kie said
"i can tell you with full confidence, these boys, these killers.... they're square groupers," jj said taking a hit of his juul before continuing.
"they're square groupers? like narco square groupers? like pablo escobar square grouper?" pope asked
"yeah, man," jj answered taking another hit.
"you guys, not everything is a kingpin movie!" kie reminded them.
"okay! so what does this square grouper look like specifically?" pope asked
"dude you weren't there!" ren yelled.
"cause apparently you don't know what to look for!" pope yelled
"dude!" jj yelled back at him. "i wasn't taking little mental polaroids the entire time man! i was under duress, okay?" jj yelled
"but i can tell you! i can tell you by the way miss lana was screaming, these guys are serious, serious hombres, man," jj said
"it's a heavy vibe right now, okay?" jj sighed
"why do they want the compass?" kie asked
"it's a piece of shit, you couldn't pawn it off for five bucks..." pope said but ren slapped his hat off him and he quickly realised, "no offence john b, i know that's like in your family-"
"the office," john b realised.
"what? what are you talking about?" ren asked
"my dads office," he walked inside the chateau, everybody else following him.
"he always kept the office locked, because he was worried about his competitors stealing his royal merchant research. we used to laugh at him all the time, like he was gonna find it. but now that he's gone, i've just kinda... i just left it as he kept it," john b said
"yeah for when he gets back," kie said, she had hope but i don't think anybody else did.
john b unlocked the doors revealing a little messy office, it had maps and pictures hung up on the wall.
"i've slept over here like six hundred times, and ive never seen this door unlocked." pope said
"yeah, and i basically live here and i've never seen it," ren laughed
john b brought this picture board thing over. "here look, this is the original owner right here," he said
"okay, robert q. routledge," kie said, "eighteen eighty to nineteen twenty. there's the lucky compass, right here," kie pointed it out in the photo,
"actually um, he was shot after he bought it," john b said
"oh wow, okay moving on," ren said
"then the compass was shipped back to henry, henry was killed in a crop-dusting accident when he had the compass," john b said,
the group started to notice the pattern, somebody got the compass, then died and now john b had it.
"after he died, the compass was given to stephan. stephen had the compass with him when he died in vietnam,"
"let me guess he died in action, right?" jj guessed
"sort of. uh a-actually he was killed by a banana truck. in - in country,"
"anyways after that, stephen passed the compass down to him, my dad,"
"hm. sound s like there's a reoccurring theme here," jj said
"finally someone said it! you have a death compass, burn it!" ren yelled and grabbed jj's hand.
"i do not! and no! i'm not burning it!" he yelled at the girl.
"seriously dude get rid of it," jj said, "it's cursed and it's made it's way back to you," jj added
"look, my dad used to talk about this compartment in here, soldiers used to hide secret notes," john b opened it.
"what's that?" kie pointed to the side john b was not focussed on,
"that wasn't there before, this is my dads handwriting," john b said
"now how can you know that?" ren asked
"because he does these weird r's with the- see it?!" john b shoved the compass in her face
"all right i get it," she said unamused
"can i see it?" jj asked
"red - rout - no i think that's an a," jj tried to read it
"it says redfield," kie said
"right," jj acted like he knew that
"okay, well, what's redfield?" kie asked.
"besides the most common name in the county?" pope asked
"maybe. maybe it's a clue," john b said
"dude! this isn't the goonies!" ren said
"i love that movie," jj said
"yeah me too," she said back to him,
"yeah dude a clue? come on?" pope said but once he noticed kies look he said, "but if it is a clue, maybe it's an anagram?" pope asked
"yes! perfect. anagram. you need paper," john b said.
"how can you concentrate with that thing crowing at you?" pope asked referring to the loud rooster outside.
"jj loves the rooster," john b said
"i love the rooster," both ren and kie said.
"okay, let me think,"
"what about like ritalin?" jj asked
"lets just stick with what we're..."
"guys," john b said
"guys!" he yelled cause nobody answered him the first time
"what?" ren asked
"somebody's here..." john b said
