FORTY SIX:  FEELING GUILTY

THE FLUROSCENT SIGN OF THE MOTEL BURNS MY IRISES, WHICH HAVE BECOME ACCUSTOMED TO THE DARK OF THE NIGHT.

Upon reaching the cracked oak reception desk, a man with shaggy, greasy locks of auburn and a face full of clogged pores offers a chilling smile, his few remaining teeth appear to be gradually blackening.

The reception is white with nothing in it, except the desk and a few white chairs with ripped spongy cushions on them to sit on top of.

It's the last place you'd expect the Cullens to stay, which fits with the plan.

"Booking under the name Jade Masen." Alice says with my duffle bag on her shoulder. I suppress a smile at the clever melding of Edward and I's names, my middle name and his original surname. I linger slightly behind the two, dragging my case along.

"Room 666." The man issues a disturbing grin, holding out a frayed key card to Jasper.

Oh, fantastic! As if this situation couldn't get any more ominous and frightening, our motel room number is the devil's signature.

"Oh, and if you need anything," He adds, letting his dull granite coloured  eyes pervertedly roam over Alice and I's bodies. "You know where I am."

Normally, I would dish out a smart ass remark to such a disgusting pervert; I'm too exhausted and drained for that right now.

Jasper snatches the card from him so harshly that I'm shocked the man's hand hasn't detached from his body, Jasper hisses at him, protectively through gritted teeth. He slings one arm over each of us. I didn't think Jasper much cared for my wellbeing or how I was treated, but I'm seeing a kind, humane side to the most 'monstrous' of the family today.

In the elevator, Alice takes one of her slender, marble fingers and presses the button for the sixth floor. I expect it to be a minute or two of awkward silence; Jasper speaks, his eyes on me.
"You're wrong, you know."

Wrong about what, exactly?

I furrow my eyebrows at the golden haired man, bewildered and unsure what to say, so I toy with the handle on my burgundy suitcase to distract myself from his focused gaze.

"I feel what you feel. You feel like you aren't worth the trouble, like we should just sacrifice you." He continues. My pupils dilate, I wasn't expecting this conversation to arise.

"Well, yes." I agree, looking up from the suitcase and towards Jasper Hale. "My family, my friends, all of you guys would be safe. It's a small price to pay."

I've never given much thought to how I would die, but dying in the place of someone I love... It seems like a pretty good way to go.

Alice gasps beside me and swipes my arm.
"Your life isn't a small price. Whether you and my brother work out or not-." She considers, before mumbling "which my visions say you will-." She then continues, her pitch reverting back to normal. "You're family now to all of us, even Rosalie."

So we're on the correct path, then. It seems like I'll come out of this alive and Edward and I will have a future. But, as I recall Edward telling me, Alice's visions are subjective and always at liberty to change.

Jasper nods in agreement, nestling Alice into his chest, she wraps her arms around his torso, lovingly.
"Although it can be hard to be around you, given my all too recent conversion, I find you to be one of the kindest of your species that I have encountered to date."

"Thank you." I smile as the elevator dings and the doors open. Jasper and Alice lead the way, his hand laced around her shoulder and hers around his torso, with the duffle bag in her free hand. We descend down the hallway with a sign that read 'Rooms 642-698.

"Also," Jasper glances back to me. "I have never seen my brother as happy as he has been since you turned his world upside down."

"Isn't that supposed to be a negative thing?" I frown, kicking a door open which leads to Rooms 662-698.

"Not in this case. You revitalised his reality." Jasper answers.

"Here we are!" Alice announces, taking the key card off of Jasper and slotting it into the door.

The room is quite nice, especially in comparison to the reception area and nicotene stained hallway. Still, it's much more basic than such refined individuals as Alice and Jasper would regularly settle for.

Without even giving it a second thought I dive onto the double bed, sinking into the soft mattress, leaving my suitcase by the door.

"Ah!" I sigh, comfortably. The two vampires chuckle at me, taking my luggage and placing it underneath the desk, adjacent to the bed.

"You must be tired. Sometimes I forget you need sleep!" Alice giggles, sitting at the foot of the bed, the mattress not even dipping, considering she's as light as a feather.

"Yeah. But before I lose the energy to speak, what will happen to James if you find him?" I ask.

"The way to permanently get rid of him is to tear him apart and burn the pieces." Jasper answers, sat upon the patterned mini couch.

"But Victoria.. He's her mate, it'll break her heart. Can't we just threaten him?" I sulk. Even though James is trying to hurt me, it doesn't mean he isn't a person. A misguided one, but a person, nonetheless. One with a mate, just like Edward. A mate that views him as her world, her reason for being, for staying on the Earth.

"No," Alice sighs, shuffling closer to me. "I'm sorry, but there's no other way." She takes my hand in her own and gives it a light squeeze, knowing how guilty I must feel.

I don't want to rid Victoria of the moon to her dark skies, but if there truly is no other way - - and Alice, being all seeing as she is--, then it's what must be done. Edward and his family won't just let me sacrifice myself for the sake of the happiness of a woman I barely know.

I may sound crazy but Victoria isn't responsible for James' actions, and just because someone was bad once, it doesn't mean they'll be that way forever. I mean, look at my boyfriend, he left Carlisle once and embraced his bloodlust, but now? He's fully reformed and moral.

"I understand." I sigh.

"Get some sleep, you have us here to protect you, so you needn't worry." Jasper assures me and Alice smiles, affectionately at me before standing up. That's all that I need to hear; I'm soon swept into the land of dreaming.
