"Should we allow him to open his presents before we go out?" Key asked Onew as the two watched Jonghyun admiring all the gifts and Christmas decorations like a little kid on sugar.
"I think that would be a good idea, or else we might not get him out of the apartment." Onew chuckled as the two made their way towards the couch.
Key just smiled as he watched the other's happy Christmas vibe... It was honestly quite contagious. Jonghyun always were the happy, positive and hyper one. He would always dance around and act all silly - which was funny - especially when Onew joined him because then it would be one big gag show as Taemin called it.
"Aw, I remember I made these when I was little." Jonghyun smiled excited as he got seated on the floor in front of the Christmas tree.
"Christmas Starts?" Onew asked as he got seated after placing a bowl of cookies on the coffee table. "I've never been able to make them. Aren't they hard to make?"
"Yeah, they are; but my mother taught me how to make them." Jonghyun replied with a soft smile as silence feel upon the others.
They wished they knew what had happened to Jonghyun's mother... that he would talk about it. Or at least that she would get better soon, because the boy may had seemed happy on the outside but he would always cry at night.
"Ah, well..." Onew let out hesitating as he scratched his neck while looking at Jonghyun who was holding a Christmas Star in his hands.
"What about we open presents now, and then we can head out afterwards?" Key suggested in a hurry to save Onew for making things harder for Jonghyun. "I think we have enough time for that."
"Really?" The happy Christmas boy asked as a big smile appeared on his lips.
"Sure," Onew replied before he nodded his head towards the colorful gifts under their little plastic Christmas tree. "Just go ahead and pick the first present to give."
Jonghyun hurried to find a big, square gift as he made his way in front of Key while wearing a mixed smile of excitement and nervousness before handing the box over to the younger. A nervous chuckle left his lips as he rubbed his hands together before he got seated next the boy.
Key starred for a while at the gift before he went to unwrap it from the beautiful holiday paper. The gift wrap felt smooth in between his soft fingers as he slowly undressed the packet from its clothing to reveal a big red box.
Key looked up at Jonghyun and then back down at the box before he opened it to find a Polaroid camera inside. His eyes widen a bit at the sight as he brought his hands into the box and around the creamy colored camera to get a closer look.
It was exactly like the camera he once had; the one his mother had destroyed right in front of his own eyes. But how? Why?
“I’ve been looking everywhere to find you something… but I didn’t know what you wished for.” Jonghyun told as he looked down on his hands.
Key blinked, quite taken aback by the gift as he looked up at the boy beside him and then back at the camera. How did Jonghyun even remember the camera? Key’s love for taking pictures? He had only mentioned it one time far back in time; So far back in time that Key almost had forgot about it himself.
“-So I bought you something I know you’ve loved once and hoped you would use again; to make new memories in your life… Good memories.”
Jonghyun continued as a weak smile found Key’s pink lips before he noticed something else in the big box. He put down the camera as his hands fished up an album for Polaroid pictures.
“-To make… and safe memories.” Jonghyun said as he watched the other study the gift with a soft smile.
Without another word Key pulled the other into a warm hug as he whispered out a grateful: “Thank you.”
Both Jonghyun and Onew looked quite taken aback by the action, but they were happy with the result. Key truly had changed and everyone around the boy could feel it. It was not like they commented on it, because they were afraid they would make it harder for the boy; but they really did appreciate it.
"I hope you will use it well," Jonghyun whispered back with a smile as Key separated to get up and pick the next present.
A few gifts were unpacked as laughter filled the apartment along with the smell of cookies and the sound of BTOB's Winter's Tale in the background. Time fast passed by, as someone suddenly knocked on the door in the middle of their Christmas fun… Who could that be?
“Come on in!” Jonghyun yelled as Taemin opened the door and hurried inside while robbing his gloves together.
“We are going to be late for our movie!” He called out as he found the others in the living room.
“Ah, we totally forgot the time. We will open presents later.” Jonghyun apologized before they all got up to get dressed. “Do we have everything?”
“I got the tickets.” Key told as he pulled over his jacket.
“I got the candy.” Onew told as Key and Jonghyun chuckled before raising a brow at him. “What? Do you guys want to pay a ridiculous amount of money for some candy?”
“They can pay for their own if they aren’t satisfied,” Taemin chuckled before leaving the apartment with the others following.
In Korea Christmas was mostly considered a couple day. It's a day where you go clubbing; go eating on a fine restaurant or to the movies. And as for our friends Onew, Jonghyun and Key... they didn't have any dates, so they had invited Taemin to spend the day with them.
The first thing they had decided to do were to go to the movies. Taemin was very excited because he had never experienced going to the theater, so it was defiantly new to him. The others were thrilled as well, but that was because they had picked out what movie to watch.
Throughout the whole movie Jonghyun had caught himself getting dangerously close to Key. He had honestly not paid attention to the movie at all. He had just taken advantage of sitting next to the other boy as he kept stealing glances of Key’s beautiful face every now and then. He had even felt the need to take the boy’s hand too and he did not like how carried away he had begun to feel lately.
Luckily the movie was soon over as the four friends made their way out of the theater. Everyone was talking about how funny the movie was, except for Jonghyun who hadn’t paid attention to the movie of course.
“Ah, I’m hungry.” Onew complained as the others laughed and joked about how often he said that.
“Well, there’s a good café near our next destination if that was an idea?” Key suggested as Onew smiled brightly at his words.
“Sounds like the best idea ever!” The older let out happily. “Then we don’t need to walk for so long either.”
“And you don’t understand why we call you old?” Key laughed loudly along with Taemin.
They all walked for about a mile in the beautiful snow as they hurried into the warm café Key had suggested earlier. It was a warm and cozy looking place; perfect for a cold winter day like this.
They all got seated in a booth in the corner of the cozy café as they took out some red menu cards there were decorated in the spirit of Christmas… Just like the rest of the store which was filled up with people; but it didn’t make the place less cozy.
After a minute a waitress walked up to the friends in the corner as she offered a sweet eye-smile before she asked about their orders. They all ordered some light food; except for Onew who said he needed to eat more since he was older, which had caused another good laughing fit to break loose.
“And what about you?” The waitress asked Jonghyun who clearly didn’t pay attention at all.
“Hyung?” Taemin let out as he pushed the other softly to gain his attention.
“Oh, I’m sorry. What did you say?” He asked slightly embarrassed as the others gave him an odd look.
“What would you like to order?” The waitress asked again as she looked into her notepad.
“Ah, just some coffee,” He replied as Key looked worried at the other.
“You’re not hungry?” Taemin asked as Jonghyun shook his head before directing his gaze into his phone.
Onew sighed lightly as he leaned back. Now was not the time to ask questions, because they all were very well aware of Jonghyun’s lost appetite after what happened to his mother. It was understandable to say, but it didn’t make the others feel less worried.
“Okay, your orders will be up in some minutes.” The waitress informed as she walked away with a smile.
“Ah, this day is awesome and we’re only half way through it,” Taemin let out excited which caused Onew to smile.
While the two was talking about the day’s activities, Key was just keeping an eye on Jonghyun who had gotten himself lost in his phone.
What had suddenly made the boy so mute? Jonghyun was acting like Key normally would when he was troubled… Key was aware of Jonghyun’s way of acting lately, but he had begun to question if these mood swings was caused by more than just his mother.
