[Interview/Trans][STARCAST] “We Are Still Hungry”…BTS, Looking back on 2014 [141228]
BTS, a seven-member boy group, has had a very busy year. The group made a comeback with ‘Boy in Luv’ last February. In August, they followed up with ‘Danger’, releasing the first full-length album. And they made a strong impression with ‘War of Hormone’ in November. They ran a mile a minute.
The group obtained good results. They were nominated as a candidate for the top spot on music program with ‘Boy in Luv’ for the first time. They held a first exclusive concert and also a concert in Japan. Then they appeared on the reality show with ‘hip hop legend’ Coolio in U.S.A. and performed on the stage at ‘MAMA’ which is a dream for lots of singers.
But they are still hungry. There are many objectives they want to visualize. First, they want to develop themselves as musicians, winning music program as a tangible result. Second is being acknowledged as professional musicians. Lastly, they want to be together with their fans always.
“It is a little bit wistful and seems that it’s far short of the goal. But we did our best so we are content with what we achieved.” (the whole members)
The meeting with BTS was held at Naver’s Green Factory. And they looked back on their 2014.
①What is the most memorable song in 2014? = They made broadcasting activity with three songs. Among them, ‘Boy in Luv’ made them a candidate for top in music program for the first time. It gave them good memories. ‘Danger’ on the other hand remains on their memories as a strenuous one because they filmed the reality show at the same time. And they had a great time on the stage with ‘War of Hormones’.
“’Boy in Luv’ is the most memorable for me. It was so cold when shooting the album jacket. The image of curling myself up with heater packs comes to mind. I have fond memories with this song and it’s my favorite.” (JIN)
“Practically ‘Boy in Luv’ gave us a lot. Many people still remember this song. It represents us and deserve to be unforgettable.” (RAP MONSTER)
“To me, ‘Danger’ is the most memorable song. We were making ‘American Hustle Life’ at the same time in U.S.A. After filming, I practiced choreography and recording. It was not easy to run both projects in parallel. However, the song was a title track of our first full-length album and I felt a sense of accomplishment with the result. It was like ‘accomplished!’” (J-HOPE)
“’War of Hormone’ is the most memorable. I was most excited with this song on stages. With other songs, it was full of tension but when we sing this song, everyone was full of joy. A dance move kicking other member was also a lot of fun.” (V)
②When is the most pleasing moment in 2014? = they achieved many things. They tasted the delights of the first exclusive concert, the stage at ‘MAMA’, and the nomination as a candidate for top. Among them, holding an exclusive concert was the happiest thing. It was all the more meaningful in that it made them became actual singers.
“I was most delightful when we hold our first exclusive concert. The stage that a singer should make as a real singer is an exclusive concert, I think. So I didn’t cry. I was glad I finally did it. I was just so happy and excited.” (SUGA)
“I was really pleased that we can make our stages directly communicating with fans. We held the concerts in Korea and also in Japan. In a way making concert tour in abroad was a strain for us due to a language barrier. However, fans singing along the songs made me feel so happy” (JIMIN)
“To me, the stage at ‘MAMA’ is the most memorable. When I performed on ‘MAMA’, I felt I have grown up. I came to think that ‘finally we are on the awards stage’. So happy and excited.” (J-HOPE)
“Actually we have appeared on most of the awards stages, except ‘MAMA’. It was honor to participate in one of the hottest awards. We also collaborated with BLOCKB. It was like building a career for our resume.” (RAP MONSTER)
“The most pleasing moment for me is when we were nominated as a candidate for the top spot of the music program. We got perfect score from text message voting, which was as surprise to us. At that time the song ‘Some’ took the top spot. Of course I was wistful but it was good enough being nominated as a candidate.” (V)
③When is the saddest moment in 2014? = If there are good memories, there are sad ones also. In retrospect, there are rough moments. But members agreed that time heals all wounds. They have not won the first place on music program yet and feel it’s far short of the goal, which make them a little bit sad.
“Nothing actually is sad, except that it was hard to do albums all through this year. I was exhausted both physically and mentally. If I have to do all again, perhaps I cannot, haha.” (SUGA)
“If I must say, the saddest moment is when we didn’t win the ranking. I have mixed feelings of joy and sorrow. I said I am not expecting to win but actually I was. But the song ‘Some’ was really good enough to win. We can win next year.” (V)
“There are some moments that suddenly feel that “we are not enough yet”. I thought we have run so much but still, it feels like there is a long way to go. When I met someone or I feel that indirectly, I used to be at a loss.” (RAP MONSTER)
④What is the most memorable stage in 2014? = They were so busy making various performances on different stages. Among them, which one is the most memorable stage for BTS? Most of the members picked their first exclusive concert. They were impressed by making their own stages with fans.
“We held our first concert this year. We have been working very hard with our hearts fluttered in anticipation. Making the first concert in domestic, we were bewildered, thinking ‘we are eventually having a real concert’. Shouting ‘Bangtan Bangtan BangBangtan’ before coming on the stage was so exciting.” (JIN)
“From when practicing to right before hitting the stage, it was full of excitement. What I always say is that ‘if a real singer, should hold a concert’, which became a reality. So it abides in my memory. I felt like I became a real singer.” (SUGA)
“For the concert, we performed 24 songs. Actually our choreography is so extreme that it was a little bit scared, worrying whether we can really do it. But after the concert, I felt much better just like I successfully did bungee jump.” (RAP MONSTER)
“It was so great because it was totally our own stage. I really enjoyed it. We went to have a dinner together after the concert, and I felt much relieved.” (JIMIN)
⑤When is the most impressive moment for BTS in 2014? = It’s been a really hectic year. They couldn’t remember the every moment. ‘American Hustle Life’, meanwhile, became the program that gave BTS the most impressive moment as well as time to take a break.
“We have met Coolio in ‘American Hustle Life’. It is a memorable scene that will never be forgotten. We cooked and sang before him, which is very impressive moment for us.” (J-HOPE)
“We went to see firework while filming the program in U.S.A. When we sang a song on the nail is the most memorable moment for me.” (JIMIN)
“There are lots of restrictions in Korea, but we can do anything we want in L.A. They are small things such as going to the laundry facility, which are different and exciting activities that I do for a first time.” (SUGA)
“There are slum called Skid Row town. I met homeless people at there and one of them gave me an advice that ‘never take drugs’, saying ‘your fARMYly members might be like us, so don’t ignore the poor, live looking back to your life’. I thought lots of things at that moment.” (RAP MONSTER)
⑥What do you think you did well in 2014? = Unexpectedly, what BTS think they did well were small things. Not being sick, closing the year without affairs, and not making any bad incident during broadcast.
“Closing the year without any affair is the best thing I have done this year. I didn’t make a big mistake on the stage. Actually I used to make troubles such as singing with the wrong lyrics, but not this year. Oh, communicating with fans is also what I done well. i feel really great about keeping communicating with fans.” (RAP MONSTER)
“For me, not being sick is what I did well. SUGA has gotten sick before so I realized that health is the most important thing of all.” (JIMIN)
“It is when we released full-length album. Some people consider only a full-length album as a real album. We have been just warming up before and now we started a real race after releasing full-length album.” (J-HOPE and SUGA)
“It’s a bit more private thing. We didn’t lose our temper to members, haha. And we also gave the members some food!” (V and JIN)
⑦What is the greatest regret in 2014? = There are moments of regret, especially about music. After all, it was desire to do better. They added that it is regretful that they couldn’t make precious memories due to a heavy schedule.
“To me, it’s our full length album. It’s very important to a singer, but it left much to be desired in many ways. I always think that we should do more practice and we could concentrate more on the album if we have gotten more time.” (RAP MONSTER)
“There was not enough time. I worked and wrote lyrics in plane. Maybe others may not know well, but there is something we feel regret.” (SUGA)
“I have much desire for development. There are always regrets like ‘I should have sung and done well’ after coming down from the stage. For me, it’s the stage at ‘MAMA’. There was a scene that I take off T-shirt eye-catchingly, and I did well at a rehearsal. However, it didn’t go well on stage. That was too bad. It was 10 times cooler at a rehearsal.” (JIMIN)
“We went to abroad a lot, but there was no time to spare as we have fixed schedule; concert hall, hotel, airport. So I imagine what if I am here for my own vacation. That is something I feel bad.” (JIN)
⑧How can you make general review of songs released in 2014? = They made broadcasting activity with three songs. They said it was amusing, regretful, and full of happiness. The guys got excited when receiving a positive response and found the experience very rewarding when they do their best.
“It was very exciting when we released ‘Boy in Luv’. We made broadcasting activity for 6-7 weeks. The number of times being broadcasted is more than 50, which is easy to feel bored, but it was not even in 6th week. We were nominated as a candidate for the top spot and other singers recognized us with this song. Also we got good response from public.” (RAP MONSTER)
“I think the music video of ‘Danger’ lacked something. The Korean version of ‘Danger’ is less powerful than the Japanese one. Indeed, we were not at our best as we stayed up three nights. We should put our efforts two to three times more than usual as it is our first full-length album.” (V)
“However, I think ‘Danger’ got a blow. Ryeowook from Super Junior sent a link of the music video in group chat room. Then Shindong praised us saying that ‘choreography is so great’ and ‘you are dancing like robots’. There was a meaningful blow as a performance.” (J-HOPE)
“The easiest song was ‘War of Hormones’. We can show our own talents rather than restrict choreography. In essence I became a singer to be happy, and this song made me feel that. it was good to enjoy myself even in broadcasting.” (V and RAP MONSTER)
⑨ What are your goals in 2015? = Year 2014 has passed all. What are BTS’s goals in upcoming 2015? Winning the music program is one of the tangible results. Also they said they want to develop themselves as musicians, getting stars in their eyes.
“My goal as a team is to get good results such as being a winner at music programs or big awards. As an individual, I’d like to make my own music or dance contents. And one more to say, I want to master a second language.” (J_-HOPE)
“Being a winner what we all wish. Personally, I want to learn about music travelling around the world. And I want to be a singer who is continuously learning and growing.” (JUNG KOOK and SUGA)
“I want to enjoy a diverse array of work. A full-length album is released, so it would be great to collaborate with other musicians. We received huge attention as collaborating with BLOCKB. I think that kind of experience is needed to build a broad knowledge about music.” (RAP MONSTER)
“The biggest goal is to be a winner. And moving to a new house is what I wished since debut. Actually we were going to move this year but we couldn’t find a right one yet. I want to move this year as there are so much gifts from fans.” (JIN)
⑩Any message to fans? = BTS laughed and cried with fans in 2014. Their hearts were full of cares about fans, saying that their driving force is fans without hesitation. They sent a big thank you to their fans.
“There are a lot of awesome singers. So I thought for so long why they always like us. I want to make a return for fans with our better performance on the stage. I am really grateful to them.”

“I want to say that thank you for taking all the troubles. It’s really hard to come to an official broadcasting. I understand how difficult it is for them. It’s amazing and also grateful.
