EVELYN'S LEG SHOOK REPEATEDLY from underneath the table. Her eyes would continuously flicker between the flashing digits on the digital clock, and her best friend's face. Eventually, she had to force herself to study his movements to ease her restlessness. She couldn't help it. She was excited.

Letting out a deep sigh, Leonard spoke up after growing irritable with her constant fidgeting. Even more so with her unwavering eyes trained on the side of his face. "Can I help you?"

Evelyn sat up at his sudden question. She didn't understand what he had meant. They had been sitting in comfortable silence for a while now. "No?" She said questionably with a frown.

"Then why do you keep staring at me?" Leonard asked, glancing up at her for the first time since she joined his side. Her mouth parted but before she could reply he cut her off. "Actually, why are you even here? I'm just looking into our next heist."

Evelyn gave him a shrug "No reason," She lied with an innocent smile. "I just don't have anything else to do at the moment."

"Really? Nothing? No plans?" He questioned.

Evelyn flipped her hair flirtatiously. "Why? You asking me out, Leonard?" She joked, and he scoffed, mumbling something along the lines of 'You wish'.

"Why aren't you asleep? You're usually sleeping by this time," Leonard asked breaking their silence once more. Evelyn smiled brightly at the fact that he noticed something as tiny as her sleeping habits. As if reading her mind, the criminal rolled his eyes.

"I'm not tired," She replied nonchalantly. Although, that was a lie as well. She was exhausted, but she couldn't go to bed just yet. She couldn't sleep when there was something more important she had to get done first.

"Okay, but-" Evelyn slapped her hand against his mouth to silence him. Snart glared.

"Why so many questions, Leo?" She teased, bringing her hand back to her side.

"Want a little tip?" Leonard asked and she gave him a quizzical look. "Do that again.... and you won't have hands," He threatened her even though they both knew he would never follow through with it. However, that still didn't stop the frown from taking over the brunette's features.

"Gotcha," She said slowly, and he went right back to his research. Evelyn huffed loudly and of course, he ignored her dramatics. Her sight slowly drifted back to the digital clock. The excitement she once had stirring within her made a reappearance as the clock flashed 11:59 pm.

"Ahhh!" She shouted and jumped up to her feet when the clock changed. Leonard jumped in his seat. He let out a growl despite the confusion on his face.

"What the hell is your problem?" Leonard called out to the brunette as she practically bolted to the kitchen of the house they were squatting in at the moment. "Actually, you know what, don't tell me. I gave up trying to understand you a long time ago," He muttered then ducked his head back down, diving right back into his work.

Evelyn squealed quietly to herself as she opened up the fridge, taking out the clear plastic container. Biting down on her lip to withhold the inhuman noise that was threatening to escape, she tiptoed back to Snart. He was hunched over, scribbling important notes and facts about the building they have plans to case this weekend.

Evelyn leaned over from the side of him and placed a cupcake on top of the notepad. Leonard stopped what he was doing instantly. He slowly sunk back in his seat. His brows were knitted together in slight annoyance but moreover confusion. She laughed quietly to herself at his reaction then placed the single candle on top. Then realization sunk into his features.

"You didn't," Leonard stated tiredly. He looked up emotionless at her giddy expression and sighed.

"Happy birthday!!!" She shouted in excitement then threw her arms around him from behind. He tensed up involuntarily, but she didn't take offense. She knew he had a bit of a hard time expressing his feelings. But most importantly, he had a hard time with any kind of physical contact due to all the abuse he had undergone as a child. After a minute he relaxed and allowed her to hug him. He didn't hug back but that was a start. Plus she didn't expect him to so she took what she could get.

"Uh, thanks," Leonard told her. Snart was obviously uncomfortable with her gesture. It's been years since he celebrated his birthday in any way. He can't even remember the last time he had birthday cake, but he never really cared.

"You're welcome." She said then gave him one last squeeze before pulling away from their hug. "It's chocolate. Your favorite. Now make a wish and blow out the candle."

Leonard laughed and Evelyn's smile faded slowly. He turned himself in his seat to get a better look at her. "You do know that I don't and never will care for birthdays, right? Let alone my own." He said with a smirk.

Evelyn rolled her eyes, letting out a huff in irritation. "Well, I do care about the birthdays of my favorite people in my life. Especially yours. You gave me a family," She said with a frown.

"Yeah, I don't do touchy-feely, sweetheart," Leonard said, the smirk on his face never faltering.

"Oh, shut up! Can you please just do this one thing for me?" She groaned as she shoved him back by his shoulder gently, but he barely moved. Leonard quirked an eyebrow. "Please, just humor me," She begged and he sighed.

"Fine. I'll blow out the candle, and pretend to wish for something stupid like the winning lottery ticket," He said, and she glared at him. He chuckled to himself and then blew out the candle.

"Happy?" He teased, and she grinned.

"Very much so," She said with a firm nod of her head. "Now, I know you don't do birthdays, but we're celebrating anyways at Saints and Sinners tonight with free drinks. So I know you can't turn it down."

"Alright," He caved faster than she expected despite his uninterested tone.

She laughed. "I knew it would only take the free drinks to get you to agree," She told him quite proud of herself.

"Actually it was just the fact that you would be there. All I need is your company," He told her with a smirk, and her eyes widened. She turned her head away quickly to hide her flushed cheeks.

Evelyn then cleared her throat before turning her attention back to Snart. "Funny," She said with a grin. Leave it to him to joke about the insane idea of them being together romantically. It was a well-thought jab given that she arranged a celebration for him when he didn't nor ever will want one.

"I was told I'm quite the comedian," Leonard shot back sarcastically.

"Oh definitely, if the whole criminal thing doesn't work out then you have found your backup career," She retorted, and Leonard snorted at her response. Just the idea alone was enough to have him shudder. It was such a ridiculous concept.

"Anyway, I'm heading to bed. Night," She told him then began to walk away. Halfway to her room, she paused her movements. "Happy birthday again, Leo," She whispered from over her shoulder, but he still heard her due to the silence lingering in the house.

She lay in bed for hours before falling asleep. Her mind couldn't help but think about Leonard's remark. She couldn't help but attempt to picture them together romantically. No matter how much she claimed she couldn't see them as anything but friends; she couldn't deny that the idea wasn't so bad. But alas, he was simply only kidding. He was clearly trying to get under her skin, but that wasn't necessarily the truth.

Leonard only agreed to go to that stupid celebration to please her, because she put so much effort into making it happen. Because she obviously- for whatever reason- cares so much about his birthday which to him wasn't that big of a deal. It never mattered to him, but he couldn't deny that he loved having her around him. He very much enjoyed her company and found any excuse to be around her. All he needed was her.

And he hated how much of a cliché it was.

A/N:

I'm sorry that this was so short.

And I'm sorry if it was terribly written too lmao.
