Chapter ten; Lost memories

▴ ◃ ▾ ▹

A loud blaring noise sounded throughout the room. It woke Jasmine up just enough that she was aware of the surroundings, though she refused to open her eyes. She then felt shifting right beside her and she figured that a person next to her reached out and shut off the alarm.

Wait... a person?

Jasmine opened her eyes with a weird force, though she had to blink several times to clear her vision, she was met with a seldom messy dorm. The dorm was not hers as the morning sun shone on different parts of it, displaying the colour red. The pieces were slowly coming together but she couldn't remember much from the previous night. The headache didn't help with that either.

A groan wanted to escape her but she rather closed her eyes trying to remember her dreams than concentrating on lost memory. She was nudged at the side and she hummed in response. She was nudged again and that made her turn her head to the left all while still laying on her stomach.

''Morning.'' A voice whispered making Jasmine peek, opening one of her eyes.

Lily was sitting up in the bed next to Jasmine, her red hair in a messy bun, eyes just as tired as they appeared on the brunette. Now a low groan did escape Jasmine as she slowly got used to having her eyes open. Lily put her finger on her lips and motioned to the rest of the room. Jasmine turned around and propped herself on her elbows. Alice, Marlene and Dorcas were all still cuddled into their beds. One was even emitting very quiet snores. Jasmine then rubbed some of the tiredness away from her eyes and looked back at Lily.

''What time is it?'' She asked, her eyes squinting a bit.

Lily leaned over the bed to look at the clock situated on one of the walls. ''It's 7 am.''

Jasmine dropped down flat on her back and reached behind her head. She picked the pillow and put it over her head, sighing deeply. A few minutes passed and Jasmine's eyes started closing again. It wasn't until Lily removed the pillow that she figured that she would have to live through the day with a lack of sleep.

Jasmine sat up beside Lily and offered her a confused expression. ''What happened last night?''

The fact that she ended in Lily's bed didn't weird her out even the slightest. She doubted she could make it back to her own dorm across the whole school. Her mind was fuzzy and the last thing she remembered from last night was dancing with Remus.

Lily showed her thinking face and she scratched at her head. ''Honestly, I have no idea.''

Jasmine chuckled quietly at the confused expression Lily wore. The redhead then chuckled as well, closing her eyes and grabbing her temples with her hands.

''The last thing I remember was seeing you, hugging you, avoiding Potter and I think I talked to Marlene...'' Lily trailed off.

''What was in that punch?'' Jasmine grinned and again emitted into chuckles.

Lily had to shush her but she barely contained her laughter as well. The two held their stomachs, quietly cackling while both steadying on the bed, not wanting to fall off it. After a minute Lily picked herself up from the bed and threw a jumper, which was forgotten at the foot of the bed, to Jasmine. The girl caught it her eyebrows indicating confusion.

''We're actually late for morning patrol.'' Lily situated her hands on her hips and raised her eyebrows at Jasmine.

The said girl frowned as she gripped tightly on her jumper. Lily motioned with her hands as though she wanted to clap, but she didn't want to wake up her dorm mates. ''Chop, chop!'' She whisper-yelled and then turned around to head to the bathroom.

Jasmine begrudgingly swung her legs over the edge of the bed and put on her jumper. The fact that she was in casual attire made her think if she'll have to run back to her own dorm for the uniform. She didn't even have her prefect pin with her even though prefects must always wear it. When she saw Lily emerge from the bathroom in the black skirt with the white blouse and her loose tie, Jasmine sighed again and unwillingly moved her legs towards the exit.

Jasmine had to blink several times to keep her focus on her task. A moment later a yawn escaped her lips and she didn't bother covering it up. Her feet were planted a little away from the many shelves of books. Her eyes scanned the covers trying to find the one Robyn asked her to pick up. It was rather hard since Jasmine had no idea how the book looked like, she didn't even know if she was in the correct section. The sound of steps brought her back from her trance and she looked the way she heard the steps. A small smile crept on her face as she observed the person nearing.

''Hi, Jasmine.'' Remus greeted, the corners of his lips tugged upwards. His voice appeared deeper due to it being not long after breakfast on a Saturday.

Jasmine dragged her eyes over his appearance. He was in the uniform, the prefect pin situated at the left side of his chest. He did appear immensely tired which knitted Jasmine's eyebrows with worry a bit. His brown hair was messier than usual and she could see the dark circles forming under his eyes. Although he stood in front of her with his hands in his pockets, his back was hunched in a tired manner.

''Hey, Remus.'' Jasmine widened her smile a fraction. ''How are you?'' She turned her body fully towards him, her hands hugged around her torso.

Remus chuckled lightly while running one of his hands through his hair. ''I could've been better. I have a killing headache from yesterday.'' His hand stopped momentarily at his temples as though he wanted to show her how bad it actually was. Both their minds travelled back to their party, their smiles never truly leaving their expressions.

At the mention of a headache Jasmine's face cleared and she hid her hand in a pocket of her robes. She brought out a small vile which was half full with a green liquid. She outstretched her hand offering him the potion. He looked down weirdly at it but took a hold of it anyway. Jasmine noticed the sickly looking pale skin of his hands and a nasty scar appeared from underneath his sleeve. She furrowed her brows as she never noticed it before, though then she slightly shook her head and brought her look back to his tired-looking face.

''I got it off of Madame Pomfrey. It looks, smells and tastes disgusting but, I assure you, your headache will be gone in no time.'' Jasmine smiled at Remus' nodding face.

She again brought her hands around herself as she watched him gulp the potion down. She bit her lip to refrain from laughing as he grimaced at the taste. He closed the vile and returned it back to her. Jasmine thought back to the party as she saw him drink, remembering seeing him drink quite a lot. She looked at his eyes again which were smiling down at her.

''Did you have a good time last night?'' Remus asked, his hands now wringing in front of him.

Jasmine nodded immediately with a tight-lipped smile. ''You Gryffindors throw a hell of a party. I once heard that the less you remember the better it was.''

Remus' laugh echoed through the quiet library. Jasmine wondered how much he remembered and if he was the one who would be able to fill her in on the rest of the happenings. It was as he had just read her mind when he started speaking.

''Well I know that we played Truth or shot, then spin the bottle I'm pretty sure Lily and James kissed...'' He trailed off.

His lips pressed hard together as he took in Jasmine's bewildered expression. She narrowed her eyes at him and he couldn't hold it in anymore so he started laughing quietly. She proceeded to push his shoulder lightly.

''You dimwit, that's not true!'' Her face couldn't get rid of shock. ''You were already tipsy when I got there, no way you know how much happened after.'' Jasmine shook her head disapprovingly.

She could not decide if she was disappointed in Remus for laughing at her or at herself for actually believing him there for a second. Remus leaned casually on one of the shelves finally able to contain his chuckles. He stayed silent and waited for her which she took as an indication to speak further.

''I do actually remember you wanting to ask me something.'' Jasmine quirked one eyebrow in question as she recalled the conversation.

''Really?'' Remus stood straighter, his eyebrows drew together in thought.

Jasmine nodded again. ''Yeah, you said something in the lines of 'I have been wondering if you would like...' and then James shouted interrupting you. You never finished the question, not that I know of that is.''

Remus saw her expectant expression. She kept quiet after that waiting for him. He had a hard time picturing himself actually asking the question the day before but he knew exactly which question his drunk persona almost asked. He had thought about it for a few times before, not plucking the courage to actually ask. They were acquaintances from different houses and he wasn't sure if he could call her his friend.

His eyes wandered over her and he had to really try to keep acting clueless. Other than these quiet banters in the library, during prefect meetings, patrols or that one time at the party they had little to no connection. But he knew deep inside he wanted more interaction as he liked spending time with her. Though then his courage to offer to talk more diminished the second she appeared somewhere in his line of sight.

Little did he knew she had the same thing on her mind but she wanted to try and find more times when they could be truly alone without other distractions. He finally looked back at her eyes, which were still hopefully waiting for a positive answer.

''I'm sorry, I have no clue about it.'' Remus shrugged with a slight frown, the repeating question inside his head left being unsaid.

He bit the inside of his cheek seeing the disappointed expression on Jasmine. She averted her glance from him and looked at the ground, her hair covering almost all of her face. She brought her hands up to tuck her long light brown hair behind her ears. She then straightened and turned her body back to the bookshelf. Her eyes scanned the covers again, sifting through her mind of what she was here for.

''Are you searching for a specific book?'' Remus piped up nearing her.

She nodded silently still looking at the bookshelf. ''Robyn needs something for her homework for Ancient Runes.''

She heard Remus let out a quiet 'ah' beside her before his body left her side. Jasmine tilted her head towards the tall boy who was searching for a book on the other side of the shelf, his head tilted all the way to the back. He then reached up and pulled a book out nearing Jasmine again. She showed an embarrassed smile as she grabbed the heavy book Remus was offering her.

''Thank you.'' She looked up at him, a smile present on his face.

He opened his mouth to say something more when they both heard someone clearing their throat behind Jasmine's back. Jasmine first saw the disappearing smile from Remus' face and then she drew her eyebrows together and slowly turned around. Her eyes landed on another tall boy with dark brown hair styled back. His casual attire didn't fail to show how important it was for him to always appear presentable.

''Jazzy, a word?'' William's flat look almost made Jasmine shudder.

He motioned with his hand for her to start walking. She nodded reluctantly and stepped towards the exit a few steps behind her cousin. She couldn't muster a look back at Remus, but the boy did manage to catch her scared eyes just before she disappeared.
