WARNING: BLOOD AND GORE ( and maybe a little bit of gay)
Peter had been at school when it had happened. His classes went on as they did normally. When the first person changed in public it caused an uproar. The first thing that happened when the outbreak started was a worldwide power outage. No one could understand what was happening. There was no cell signal and even technology such as Peter's suit couldn't activate.
People crowded together in an attempt to escape but that made them easy targets for the undead. A Zombie apocalypse was something out of a television show or a Wattpad fanfiction, and it almost didn't seem real. Peter's first instinct was to go to the Avengers' Tower, but when he ended out herding most of his academic decathlon team through alleyways things changed for the worse. They had lost a couple of different people when trying to hide in the school, but most of the team had been smart enough to know what to do in a crazy situation. They were left with Mr. Harrington, MJ, Ned, Peter, Cindy, Betty, and Flash. The group had makeshift weapons they had created with materials from the robotics lab.
The Avengers' Tower had never seemed that far when Peter was driven by Happy or was swinging by a web. He could have easily swung through the streets even without his suit, but he didn't have the heart to leave his friends to fend for themselves. They had already been on the streets for days and were in desperate need of food.
"MJ and Peter should make the run into the convenience store for supplies. They are the fastest we have and if anything goes wrong they could handle the situation better." Ned made the plan for the food run, but the thought of separating everyone made Peter's stomach twist. Despite the fact Ned made the plan it was obvious he didn't feel great about it either. Peter agreed with an ache in his heart and a bad feeling in his chest.
It was a small grocery store that had a padlocked door. Peter looked around to make sure none of the other members were looking his way before crushing the lock in his hand. He gently pulled the chain out of the door handles while trying to be as silent as possible. MJ gave him a nod before they crept through the door. Peter waited for something to jump out at him but upon hearing nothing rushed to grab supplies from the tall shelves in front of him. His feet bumped all the things that had been knocked into the floor. Maybe that should have hinted to him that something was wrong, but he didn't even think twice.
With a sweep of his arm, he knocked a shelf full of cans into his backpack and silently cursed at the loud noise but rushed to finish anyway. Peter was filled with joy at his luck of finding canned goods and water but his happy thoughts were interrupted by a loud bang. He rushed to the source of the sound to see MJ's foot trapped under a shelf. Her face was calm but he could see the panic in her eyes. A zombie stood behind her trying to grab her while she was disabled. Peter quickly used his Swiss Army knife and made a gash across the zombie's face. He hadn't cut deep enough and the zombie lunged at him again with a loud groan. Peter stumbled for a moment before swiping again. This time his knife went through the eye socket and the zombie fell in a heap.
He pulled the shelf off of MJ's foot but they quickly discovered that walking would be an issue for her. He didn't waste a split second and threw her over his shoulder. Her ankle was swollen and a deep purple color, and sadly there was no ice to treat it with. He remembered to grab the bag of supplies on his way out.
He took her outside before anything else could come at them from the corners of the small shop. The rest of the team stood in wait exactly where they had left them. They were frantic when they saw him carrying MJ.
"What happened?"
"Is she infected?"
"What are we going to do?"
He finally calmed them down enough to answer their questions. As he spoke to them they slowly realized that panicking wouldn't do them any good. After a moment of deliberation, they decided to find a safe place to sleep for the night. They were lucky enough to be near May's apartment building. Once they arrived Peter searched frantically for Aunt May but the only thing he found was a note she had left. The paper was covered in tear marks that sent a pang through his heart.
Peter,
Tony is taking me to the tower. If you find this note please come to meet us. He already checked your school and couldn't find you. Where are you? I'll see you soon. Until then, remember I love you.
May
It was a short note and he couldn't even imagine the things that were going through her head when she wrote it. He knew that they must be frantic. Tony was like a father to him and would be thinking of the worst and blaming himself. He knew Harley would think he failed as a brother. Peter knew he had to make it home to them.
The team sat around the living room covered in all of the blankets from the hall closet. They opened the cans Peter had found and began to eat.
Peter had already not eaten in two days and the team had no idea about his high metabolism. One can of food barely made a dent on the emptiness of his stomach but he ignored the pain and left the rest of the cans to his teammates.
They found it hard to laugh that night. There didn't seem to be anything to smile about. Even filling their stomachs with food hadn't helped with the dark intruding thoughts that plagued them all. They sat in awkward silence for a while before they decided to go to sleep. They said goodnight with solemn faces before sinking into the darkness, but Peter didn't sleep. He stayed awake almost all night watching the door that he knew was locked. He half expected one of the corpses from the street to come in and eat them all the second he closed his eyes.
When the team woke up the next morning they all exchanged glances when they noticed the bags under his eyes and his constant yawning, but they had no choice but to continue to make their way.
Peter was hopeful that today would be the day they arrived at the tower. He held MJ on his back as they snuck through the streets and avoided all of the monsters that crept about. He felt like death. He continued to see black spots in his vision from lack of sleep and food. He was tempted to just drop to the ground and give up but he kept going for his friends. He knew MJ would have to limp or be left behind without anyone to carry her.
They walked for hours and Peter felt as if someone had dropped a building on him (again). They were only a few blocks from their destination and Peter could almost cry, but it was all too much. He fell to the ground. He could faintly hear harsh whispers around him.
"Tony will be so relieved he's here."
"He needs nutrients. He's malnourished."
"We need Bruce."
Thankfully, he woke up just moments later. He could see Clint and Natasha leaning over him. He was relieved to see the familiar faces.
"Can we go home now?" Their heads whipped around to look at him.
"Thank god. Yeah, buddy let's get you to your dad before he comes out and beats my ass." Clint wore a relieved smile as he helped lift Peter up.
"I think it's his boyfriend we need to worry about" Natasha spoke with a knowing smirk that made Peter blush.
The decathlon team looked at each other with confusion, but they just continued to follow and listen to the witty banter going on. They entered the tower which had an emptied out lower floor. They helped Peter up the stairwell. He could feel his spirit begin to lift with every step he took towards his loved ones. Natasha explained that Tony had begun using all of the mid-level floors as a sanctuary for all of the survivors they had encountered in the streets. Peter wondered how many people were left but he didn't know if his heart could take the answer. Instead, he listened to Ned's heavy breathing and he reassured himself as he heard MJ's shaky breaths from her spot on Clint's back.
As they got close to the floor for the Avengers' they could hear an argument. It seemed to echo through the stairwell.
"He's been missing for two weeks. We should be doing more! My boyfriend is out there on the streets fighting for his life! How dare you already assume he's dead you Star-Spangled Asshole?! He would never let himself die without saying goodbye. So shut it before I beat your skull in." Peter entered the room as Wade was finishing his rant.
"I missed you too Romeo," Peter announced with a smirk. Wade stiffened at the sound of his voice.
"If I turn around and your not ready to hug me I'm gonna get you." Peter ran forward and jumped into Wade's arms with a happy laugh.
They held each other as if they hadn't seen one another in years. Wade sobbed as Peter tucked his head into the crook of his neck.
"What the fuck," muttered Flash from across the room but Peter chose to ignore it for the sake of his own sanity.
"Sorry to break this up but I'm gonna go ahead and take my son from you now." Tony stood there with open arms.
"Yeah bro I see how it is," said Harley with a smirk. Peter turned and leaped into his father's arms with a wide smile.
"Double what the fuck," muttered Flash.
It was good to be home.
