"So, what did you and Hunter talk about?"
"Nothing really." I lied to Katie as we walked to lunch.
"Nothing really my ass." She said sarcastically. "Really. What did you guys talk about?"
"Why are you so interested in my conversations with him?" I asked quirking my eyebrow.
"Because your my best friend and you were almost run over by the hottest guy in school. So spill. And stop changing the subject."
I sighed. "He really only asked me if I believe that he is a 'bad boy', and if I believe all of that stuff that he did."
"Really. That's it?" Katie sounded disappointed in my answer.
"What were you expecting?" I asked
She shrugged. "I don't know."
We approached our table and sat down. Just then, Brianna and Regina came up to us.
"Don't I see you enough at home. We made a deal. No socializing at school." I whined to them.
"Is it true that Hunter Stows almost ran you over?" Regina asked.
"Yeah. What's it to you?"
"Well, he is the hottest guy in school." Brianna said.
"And..." I asked. I have no clue where this conversation is going.
"Why would a guy like that, be talking to a girl like you?" Regina snapped.
"Oh thanks. That makes me feel so warm and fuzzy inside. Can you guys just please leave me alone?" I whined.
They stood their for a moment looking me over. "I said please!" I yelled at them and they turned on their unbelievably high heels and scurried over to their table.
"What was that about?" Katie asked while shoving a fry in her mouth.
"I don't know. They are probably just jealous that he didn't call them back after..." I trailed off.
"Yeah." Katie said as she looked down at her food which consisted of two pieces of bread with probably horse meat in the middle, and soggy fries. "I hate Hight School lunch. I mean, have they ever heard of a salad?"
"I know right." I said quietly.
"Hey Faith. Hey Faiths friend." Hunter suddenly appeared in front of our table.
Katie and I jumped. "Why hello there, do we have the pleasure of having the famous Hunter Stows sitting with us this fine lunch hour?" Katie asked in her very sarcastic voice.
"Well I believe you do." Hunter replies with a smile.
"Plus, you guys seem cooler." He said as he pulled up a chair next to me. "So what were you guys talking about?"
Katie looked at me with confusion which I returned with a shrug.
"We were just talking about the crappy food they have here." I said simply.
"Oh my god yes. Last year I found a band-aid in my grilled cheese sandwich." He said, the edges of his lips pulling upward into a smile.
"Really?" He nodded. "One time I bought milk from the lunch line, an it was all chunky. That was the last time I ever drank milk." Katie recalled from last year.
"I think that's even worse than the band-aid." Hunter confirmed laughing.
Suddenly the bell rang signaling that the lunch period was over, and to go to fifth period.
"Okay then. Bye." Hunter waved to us and then returned to his group of friends.
"That was weird." Katie said.
"Yeah. Anyways, let's just get to Chemistry." I said starting my journey to my locker.
••••••••••••••••••••••••
The bell finally rang signaling the end of school. "Thank god." I whispered to myself while grabbing my stuff and practically sprinting out of Math.
I went to my locker and starting placing my books in my backpack.
Katie came up to me, backpack in hand, "you ready to go?"
"Almost. Don't you think it's cruel that the teachers give us homework on our first day of school? I mean come on." I said slamming my locker.
"Yeah. Mr. Anderson gave us a crap load of Chemistry homework. I can already tell I am going to hate that guy." Katie agreed as we walked outside into the parking lot.
We spotted Katie's black Impala and started walking over to it. "I just can't wait until swimming tryouts. Then I don't have to go home until 6:30 every night."
"When are swimming tryouts by the way?" Katie asked unlocking the car.
"Tomorrow. I literally can not wait."
She started the car and we drove silently to my house.
•••••••••••••••••••••
"Thanks Katie!" I yelled once I got to my front door.
She waved and then continued to drive off in her Impala. I took a deep breath and stepped through the door and immediately regretted it.
