he said that he remembered a time when stuff like this should have mattered.  I asked him 'when was that?' he smiled weakly and turned away from his tears.  he didn't need the clock anymore so we threw it out into the yard.  the dog walked over and pissed on it and then laid down a few feet away.  he laughed and shook his head and said 'and I remember when stuff like that didn't matter.'  we both sipped our coffee and watched the sun finally crest the treetops.
