Tonight is the celebration of Maura and Theo's birthday. When you woke up this morning, you freshen up a bit and head downstairs to help setting up the decorations for the party.
Again, you were nervous because Niall's relatives are coming over and it is your first time meeting them. Last night wasn't the treatment that you were expecting to get but you just shrugged it off like nothing happen, maybe because all of them were just tired and stress. Maybe today they will be in a good mood and will treat you differently.
You are in the living room putting a Happy Birthday banner on the wall. While everyone is busy doing there own business.
“Love, be careful you might fall!” Niall said once he saw you standing on a ladder
He put the two boxes down that he was carrying and walked over to hold the ladder steady.
“Niall it's okay, I'm not going to fall.” You said and continued putting on the banner
Niall helped you down and you walked further to check if the banner is perfectly set.
“So what do you think?” You asked Niall while admiring it
“It's perfect, (Y/N).” He answered while looking at you making you smile
“So what do you have here?” You asked walking towards the boxes
You opened it to see a tangle of Christmas lights “Where will you hang this?”
“Backyard. So if you are done, may I borrow the ladder madam?” He said bowing down like a prince and I chuckled
“Of course you may, prince Niall.” You said doing a courtesy and a British accent
“Are you still busy?” He asked and I shook my head no
“Well great, because you're helping me with the lights.” He said and carried you to his shoulder then he grabbed the ladder to his free hand making you laugh
Niall's POV
While (Y/N) and I are putting on the lights on our backyard, I went back inside to grab some zip ties from the kitchen.
“Hold on, love. I'll be back, we need zip ties for this section.” I said pointing out the cords
“Okay.”
As I walked over to the kitchen, mum was baking some cookies.
“Ooh! Mum you didn't have too!” I said as I was grabbing a piece of cookie but she slapped my hand before I even had it in my hand
“Oy! That's for later.” She said a little sternly
“Ow! Mum! You could've said it instead of slapping my hand that hard.” I said while giving my hand a soothing rub
“Stop acting like a baby! You're 26 years old for goodness sake!” She said making me chuckle
“Oh I've missed you mum!” I said hugging her from behind
“I've missed you too. So much!” She said then for a moment, it was silent. After a few seconds, she took a sigh making me unwrapped my arms around her
“What's wrong?” I asked
“It's that girl that you brought home.” She said
“(Y/N)? I love her, mum.”
“Well I don't.” She said
“I don't understand. Why don't you like her?” I asked a little ticked off “You still owe her an apology from last night.”
“I didn't do anything, why will I apologize?” She said not even bothering to look at me
“Mum, please. Last night was rude. She was just trying to make a conversation.” I explained
“Clearly I was talking to you.”
She was being stubborn and it's getting through my nerves.
“What did she do wrong to make you not like her?”
“I don't know. I just don't like her for you.”
“You don't even know her, mum!” My voice starting to get louder “It is my decision to make on who I want to be with and I want to be with her, whether you like it or not.”
“Don't you dare use that tone to me Niall James Horan! I said what I said. I don't like her!” She said slamming her hand through the kitchen counter “She shouldn't be here celebrating this party with us. She is not part of this family!”
“Well in that case, I don't want to be part of this family if you can't love the person I wanted to be with.” I said grabbing the zip ties and walked out

(Y/N)'s POV
It was already 6pm and all of Niall's relatives will be coming over anytime soon. While curling your hair, you started to get feel nervous and started to over think.
“Love, calm down.” He said while putting his hands on top of your shoulders “They'll love you, trust me.”
You nod and gave him a fake smile through the mirror.
“(Y/N), if you're still worried about last night with mum, don't worry about it. I already talked to her.” He said
“Really?” You asked looking to his eyes through the mirror
“Yes, now be ready in 5 minutes. We should be down by then.” He said and gave you a kiss on top of your head
You noticed there is something wrong with him tonight, he was a little quiet.
“You okay love?” You asked while curling the last strand of your hair
“Yeah, just jet lagged. But don't worry about me, I'm good.” He said before walking back to his bedroom

“Uncle!” Niall called out making his uncle turn his attention towards us “It's been awhile since we hang out.”
They gave each other a hug and you were just standing there, smiling.
“Who's this lovely lady over here?” He asked Niall after pulling away from the hug
“This is (Y/N), my girlfriend.” Niall proudly answered
“Pleasure to meet you, sir.” I gave him a welcoming smile and offered my hand to him
“Oh, I thought you were still with Melissa.” His uncle asked Niall after shaking his hand with mine
“Uncle, that's old news.” He answered and you felt that he got a little tense answering him
“Well I just saw her.” His uncle said
“I haven't been contacted with her ever since.”
“No, what I mean Niall, she's here.” He said
Is Melissa his ex-girlfriend?
“I didn't know mum invited her.” He said getting uncomfortable
Then it was an awkward silence
“So uhm, food is already serve. Just help yourself, uncle.” Niall patted his shoulder and his uncle smiled and left
“You never told me about Melissa.” You said
“What for?” He asked
“I don't know.” You simply answered
“Look, it doesn't matter. Pass is pass. I don't love her anymore, alright?”
“I know.” You smiled at him and he held your hand with his
“I love you.”
“I love you, too.”
“Come on, let's grab some food and join the rest of the family.” He said
Niall's POV
As I went back to the kitchen to grab some beers, mum was also in the kitchen slicing the cake.
“You never told me you invited Melissa.” I said
“Why, is there something wrong?”
“Don't you think it's wrong timing?” I asked
“Nothing is wrong timing if you and Melissa made it clear two years ago. The fact that she's here it's because she is part of the family.” She said “And I think Melissa is better for you. I've never seen you so happy when you and Melissa were dating.”
“I am in my happiest now because of (Y/N), mum.”
“Have you told (Y/N)? That the reason you left 18 months ago it's because you wanted to move on from Melissa.”
I was silent and was frozen after she said that
“You see? I'm your mother. I know you ever since. I know when you are happy, contended, and safe. And you were when you were still dating Melissa. You told me Melissa is the best thing that ever happened to you and I agree.”
“Not anymore, mum. I brought (Y/N) home because I wanted you to know that I fully moved on and I am happy.”
“If you are, then why are you so upset that Melissa is here?” She asked but I totally spaced out “You better think it over before it's too late.” She said before walking out of the room
As I turned around I saw (Y/N) standing at the doorway with tears streaming down her cheeks.
