Chapter 4

“Have you set up a meeting with the Moon Pack,” I ask Marley two days after the rogue came onto our lands.  We're allowing her and her son to stay on pack lands as long as she finishes high school and gets a job aferwards.  Until then, she's staying at the pack house.  But if the Moon Pack is actually peaceful, we might take her back over there.  It might just be a case of a scared young girl afraid to be a mom.

Marley nods her head as she slides into one of living room chairs.  “They think we’ve come to rephrase our treaty.”  She rolls her eyes making me laugh.  “We’re leaving tomorrow.”

I nod at her, smiling as I see the small body of Noah dart into the room.  “Gray!” he shouts in excitement, throwing his self in my arms.  I chuckle at the sweet three year old.

“Hi baby, how was daycare?” I ask, brushing his brown hair out of his face.  Noah was found in the forest, his parents dead next to him.  We assume his parents were rogues, but we took in the one year old and I’ve been looking after him ever since.

“Good!  But, I have a question,” he says, puckering his delicate eyebrows in confusion.

“Shoot,” I reply, giving him a small smile.

“What’s a mommy?” he asks, and my hands tighten against his small body.  I look up to see Marley slowly walking out of the room.  I shoot her a glare, but she just gives me a sad smile back before exiting the room.

I look back to the adorable toddler, smiling at her as if nothing’s wrong.  “Why do you ask?”

“Well,” he starts, cuddling into me.  I drape a blanket over both of us as he continues, “all the other kids have mommies and they say that they are the best.  But I didn’t know what a mommy was, and they laughed at me,” he says, his lip jutting out a little bit as he tries to hold in his tears, but one slip out.  He looks up at me with watering brown eyes, making my heart squeeze.  “So what’s a mommy and where can I get one?”

I sigh, tucking his head under my chin, hugging him tighter.  “Well, you can’t just get a mommy.  A mommy is a very special person who will love you no matter what.  They take care of you, hug you and never want to let you go,” I explain, swallowing back my own tears at the thoughts of my dead mother.

Noah’s head bobs under my chin as he hugs me tighter.  I hug him closer as he takes in the information, letting the room fall into a hush quiet.  “Are you my mommy Gray?” he speaks softly against me, and I feel myself flinch a little.  “Gray?” he asks, looking up at me with those sad brown eyes.  “I would really like it if you were my mommy, and you already do all those things you said a mommy does.”

I nod my head, biting my lip before looking back at the little child next to me.  “I suppose I am your mommy,” I say, and he smiles brightly at me.

“Can I call you mommy?” he asks innocently, playing with one of my dyed blue strands.  I frown a little, thinking his question through.  I don't really want him to think that I'm his real mom.  But I don't want him to go through life without someone to call mom like I did.

I smile at him again.  “Sure honey,” I say, my voice gruff with emotions.  I clear my throat while tickling him a little.  “Now how about you go play with Aunt Marley?” I ask and he laughs as my fingers dig deeper in his sides.

“Stop it mommy!” he squeals, and I do.  I can’t help but feel guilty because his parents are missing out on a really great kid.  He’ll never know his parents-I guess I’ll have to explain that part of his past when he’s a little bit older.  “Auntie doesn’t like playing with me,” he adds, jutting out his lip.

“Well you tell her I told her she has to,” I say, kissing the top of his head.  “Now run along,” I say, shooing him off the couch.

“Alright, love you mommy,” he says, giving me a kiss on my cheek before running out of the room.  I turn around to lie on my back, putting my arm over my eyes, trying to swallow back my emotions.  I’m an Alpha, I shouldn’t be feeling all these emotions, but I guess that’s what love does to you.

“You did that very well you know,” a familiar gruff voice says from my left and I groan into my arm.

“Aaron, I told you we’re over,” I mutter as I peak one of my eyes over the hill of my arm.

He smiles at me sadly and nods.  “I know, but Marley sent me in here to tell you that you have a call from another pack.”

I frown, sitting up, letting the thin blanket fall to my waist.  “What pack?  Did they sound angry?” I ask as I rush out off the couch and walking quickly to my office.

“The Elm Pack Alpha,” he says and I stop dead in the hallway.

“The Elm Pack?” I exclaim, turning around in shock.  “Were they angry?” I ask him, but he just shrugs making me groan at his lack of information.  I walk faster to my office.  If they want to declare war on my pack, it won’t turn out well.  Our packs aren’t rivals per say, but when two of the most powerful packs are situated even somewhat close to each other, trouble stirs.

“It’s a web conference,” Marley warns as I enter the office.  I nod, letting her fix any stray curly brown strands so it looks better with my blue highlights.

“Eyeliner good?” I ask, looking at her and she nods.  I look down at my casual attire and shrug.  They should have given us a warning, it’s their fault I’m not dressed for the occasion.  I sit down in my comfy chair, crossing my legs at my knees, before pressing okay on the call icon.  I jump as a rather handsome face pops up onto my screen and I feel my heart flutter as my wolf whimpers softly.

Mate.  She whines and I frown deeper, the male on the other end frowning too.

No mini me, that isn’t our mate.  We don’t have a mate.  And that’s the truth.  Once you get rejected, the bond permanently snaps.  It’s not like in those silly romance books where they end up falling in love.  We might still have some feelings for the rejected mate, but they’re easily squashed.  I turn my attention back to the shock man on my screen.  He has nicely chiseled features and blond hair whipped wildly across his head; a pair of the most alluring light blue eyes stare back at me in shock before his sexy bow lips let out a growl, “Mate.”

“The Moon Pack is out of control!” I say, slamming my fist onto the desk as I look at the elders in my pack.  “We need to stop this pack from growing even more out of control!”

“I agree,” Ralph says, clinching his fists together while nodding.  “But we can’t do it alone, we need to make sure that the Moon Pack will be heavily outnumbered.”

“We need to get the Hidden Tree Pack in on this,” Eleanor says, nodding her head at me.

I groan, wiping a hand through my hair.  “They won’t agree with us.  Alpha Steven would barely compromise with us, and we don’t know anything about Alpha Gray.  For all we know, he could be just as bad as the Alpha from the Moon Pack.”

“Now Alpha,” Ralph says, standing up from his chair and leaning towards me.  “Don’t go assuming that Alpha Gray is some dishonorable man.  You won’t know what he is like until you at least try.  The worse thing he could do is say no.”

“Or go to war with us.  Need I remind that the Moon Pack was Alpha Steven’s brother territory before his untimely demise,” I point out making him sigh.

“Yes, but even Alpha Steven would put an end to this.”

I close my eyes dragging in a deep breath to calm myself.  “Fine,” I growl out.  “I’ll phone conference the Alpha right after we finish speaking, but-“

“Actually,” Eleanor interrupts me as she stands up, pulling her sheets of paper with her.  “I need to leave,” her eyes sparkle with excitement as she walks slowly towards the door.  “My granddaughter is being born as we speak and I must attend to my daughter,” she says and I nod.

“Congratulate Emily for me,” I say and she nods.

“Thank you Alpha,” she replies before departing with a smile.

“Well, we can’t have a meeting without a member, so I suggest you get ready for your meeting,” one of the other elders says before they say their goodbyes and exit the room.

Ten minutes later, I’m in front of my laptop, tapping my pen impatiently on the desk.  What’s taking him so long?  I called the old Beta five minutes ago.  I would have called the new Beta, but I haven’t gotten his number.  A light on my chat flashes, and I sigh.  Finally!

I lean forward, not really understanding what I’m seeing.  A leggy brunette is sitting in the chair.  Maybe it’s his mate?  My travel from her skinny jean covered legs all the way up to her curious light grey eyes.

“Mate!” my wolf calls out excitedly, and I jump, still staring wide-eyed at the woman in front of me.  Her wavy dark brown hair, streaked with a vibrant blue, flows down, past her elbows, and long eyelashes surround beautiful silver.  Her full lips open in shock as her face drains of color.

“Mate!” my wolf howls again in my head, but it’s not possible.  Leah died four years ago from rogues.  This beautiful creature in front of me can’t be my mate.

Yet, I feel my lips curve into a growl as the words mate leaves my mouth.  I watch as the gorgeous woman’s eyes widen before they narrow slightly into suspicion.  I don’t know who this woman is, but I do know one thing for certain.  “She’s ours!” my wolf howls in my mind again and I nod with him.
