"I've never lit a match,
with intent to start a fire,
but recently the flames,
are getting out of control."
KIRA POV
"How bad was he?" I questioned, leaning on the kitchen bench in an effort to feign casual interest. When in reality I was holding my breath, worried for Luke. How messed up was this kid? I didn't know why my sudden curiosity was so overpowering. Luke was an idiot and quite clearly he didn't care what people thought of him. Considering the fact that he was new and already in the hospitable, waisted and cut up.
I knew that mum was going to question my sudden interest. I should've thought of that before I opened my mouth....
"Why the sudden curiosity?" She questioned, as if on cue.
God damn it. I thought to myself. Now what? I couldn't exactly come out and say,
Oh yeah he's just this new guy that 's been following me. He's a major dick but you know that's ok.
Ahhhhhh
No. If I said that mum would most likely file a restraining order on him. That's just the kind of parent she is.
So I settled with this instead,
"New guy at school. He's in some of my classes." I said in a 'I don't really care' tone.
I honestly was proud of myself, my cover was pretty impressive. However, Mum was still looking at me skeptically. I knew she didn't believe me. There isn't a lot I could do to change that. Once she believed something she stuck by it, much like myself.
So I decided to try and change the subject, a risk I was willing to take.
"Anything else eventful happen?" I asked as I began walking back towards my room.
"Nothing much. Some girl had eaten some bad chicken. That was a whole new level of ugly." She groaned.
I shuddered, that was disgusting.
"Alright, well I'm going back to bed." I announced, not waiting for a reply as I ran back down the stairs, trying my best not to trip over in the process.
I'm coordinated, just not when I can't see anything.
I crept down the stairs and slipped into my room, quietly closing the door behind me before literally jumping back into bed and on top of Jadea.
She let out an annoyed hiss before scurrying away into the corner of the room, her round yellow eyes glowing in the bright moonlight.
The rest of the weekend past without much entertaining news. I had my usual shift at the coffee shop down the road, serving hot drinks to middle aged slightly perverted men. I swear I was the youngest person there by at least 20 years. Some guy even slipped his number into the front pocket of my black apron. The memory itself is enough to give me shivers. I didn't hear a single thing on social media about Luke or any form of sketchy business. It sounds bad that I've put him into that box of 'bad guys' already but sometimes looks is enough to go by. I know I haven't really 'gotten to know the guy' but I honestly don't think that that would be necessary.....
Monday morning came around like the bitch it usually is way to quickly. I woke up thinking it was Sunday and almost rolled over to go back to sleep when I heard my phone start to ring from my bedside table. I groaned, rolling over beneath the dona to reach out and grab the phone before I missed the call.
"Hello?" I answered, not bothering to look at the caller ID. I startled myself, my voice sounded horrible. Like I'd swallowed a small handful of nails.
"Kira!!! Oh my god did you hear about Luke?! Do you reckon he will show up at school today?" Charli's voice drilled into my still slightly foggy head giving me an instant head ache.
"Wha??" I questioned, sitting up to rub my eyes repeatedly.
"Apparently, rumour has it he beat some guy up on the weekend." Charli continued sounding over the moon at the new piece of news. To be honest it just made me even more angry at him then I already was.
I looked over at the clock and almost died.
7:45, school started in less then an hour.
"Keep talking, you're on loud speaker I have to get ready." I explained as I threw my phone, on loudspeaker, to the end of my bed.
"Okay, okay." She said as I began frantically trying to decide what I was going to wear.
"Mum said he came into the hospitable drunk on Friday night." I said, leaving out the detail about how he half dropped me home.
"Really?!" Charli gasped, sounding as if it was the best thing she'd heard all day.
"True story." I replied as I pulled on a pair of high waisted dark wash shorts.
"How hot is it going to be today?" I asked/yelled from inside my cupboard.
"24". I heard in reply as I pulled out a light, white midriff top that hung off my right shoulder.
"Thanks bud." I yelled as I grabbed a pair of white converses from under a pile of clothes.
"I'm gonna have to go, save me a seat in english please!!!" I yelled.
"Sure thing K, Byeeeee!!" I heard her shout before the phone went dead and I was left frantically trying to get ready. I pulled my blonde hair up into a pony tail and pulled on a black bandana. Leaving a few strands out to frame my face.
"Done"I muttered to myself before grabbing my school bag out of the corner of my room and my phone off my bed before sprinting like a maniac up the stairs and out of the front door. I was so late.
I arrived at school, thankfully students where still milling around the lockers. I wasn't too late. I put my bag away, grabbing my books and laptop before hurrying in the direction of my english class. English was my favourite subject, besides science. I enjoy writing and learning about the world so I guess that's one of the reasons why. What did annoy me where people that made fun of me because my favourite subjects are probably two of the three besides maths that the majority of the schools population hate. So I often kept my inner nerd to myself to save myself from the social humiliation that I would most likely receive. So I stick with writing an essay, paying attention and being a silent achiever. Most unlike Charli. English literature was her thing and if anyone messed with her english class that person might as well purchase a one way ticket to hell. I'm not even joking.
"Kira you are late." Mr Freeman grumbled at me as I walked into the room. His eyes looked angry as he peered at me over his half moon glasses. This man looked pretty much like a modern day Dumbledore. Long beard, gold glasses and beady blue eyes. He literally looked as if he could walk into the set and blend into the wizard world just fine.
"Sorry sir." I mumbled in reply as 20 pairs of eyes looked mockingly at me. I was never late, nor early so everyone was treating this circumstance like it deserved to be documented in the guinness book of records. I glared back and all their stares instantly fell away. Serves them right.
I moved to slide into the empty space beside Charli in the back row.
"What happened this morning? You're never late!!" She whispered as Mr Freeman began his usual speech about his weekend while trying, in vain, to find his class notes. He really was a pathetic excuse for a teacher.
"Your call literally woke me up." I shrugged as I opened up to a blank page in my note book and grabbed a blue pen from my pencil case.
"Damn." Charli muttered.
"I know right....." She cut me off.
"No I mean damn boy." She whispered, looking into the direction of the door.
I felt my insides clench up in worry and my heart rate increase.
I turned around gingerly to see what she was looking at. There, standing in the door way was a very, good looking Luke Hemmings. He wore a red flannel that was unbuttoned a bit at the top, the sleeves pushed up to his elbows aw well as dark jeans and black converses. The low cut of the flannel highlighted something I hadn't noticed before, a tattoo stretching from one collar bone to the other and god damn it was hot.
I noticed myself staring, the butterflies in my stomach jumping all over the place. Why and how did this even happen? He was a dick, Friday night was a perfect example of this.
"Luke, it's an honour you decided to turn up this morning." Mr Freeman said in a bland and slightly annoyed voice.
"Trust me Freo the pleasure's all mine." Luke replied cockily, a smirk stretched across his face.
I rolled my eyes and focused back onto drawing different sized triangles in the top corner of my book, trying to ignore the boy that had just entered the room.
"Well take a seat then." Mr Freeman snapped as Luke continued to stand in the doorway, blocking most of it because he was so bloody tall.
"You really are quite the gentleman Dumbledore." Luke said in a challenging tone as he took a seat in the back row near the door. A little too close to Charli and I for my liking.
At his comment the class began to snicker and if this situation was a cartoon there would've been steam tumbling from Mr Freeman's ears.
"Just sit down and listen."
Luke didn't reply, but gestured to the fact that he was sitting, rather slouched, in a chair. At this movement I realised that Luke's arms where bandaged in thick white gauze. He also had a cut above his left eyebrow, near his two black piercings.
That made me wonder if what Charli had said was actually true.....
The rest of the lesson was rather boring and that's saying something. Simply because I find english one of the most engaging times of the day. But today everything just wasn't working for me. I couldn't concentrate.
"Ok class I have to leave the room for a minute to get Mr Hemmings a detention slip. Won't be long." Mr Freeman then left the room leaving us all slightly worried.
"Yeah Hemmings why are you so late? Hit up another 12 year old on the way to school?" Dylan, the jock and ass of the school piped up as soon as the heavy wooden door leading out of the small room closed.
I stiffened in my seat, that wasn't a good idea.
I saw Luke's posture stiffen from the corner of my eyes as I continued to write into my book.
"Did you? Kill another boy like you did on Sunday, cause your daddy don't love you?" Dylan continued, a jeer present on his face.
That was enough. He'd hit a nerve.
"YOU. HOW DARE YOU ACCUSE ME OF THAT. YOU ARE A PATHETIC SOUL GO TO HELL." Luke yelled, standing up and throwing the chair across the classroom. He was angry, red faced and his fists where clenched tightly by his sides.
"Bipolar freak." Dylan muttered turning around as Luke took three long strides, grabbing Dylan in a head lock and slamming him against the wall.
Mr Freeman then came back, only to see Luke seething and grasping Dylan around the neck like a rag-doll.
"Let him go Hemmings." Freeman yelled as Luke practically threw Dylan to the floor, spat on him and stalked out the door.
I couldn't believe my eyes.
