As Haylee and Sam went to the hospital in an ambulance, she couldn't help but think back to a conversation she had with Lex years ago. She couldn't believe it was actually happening.
"Do you want me to call anyone?" Sam asked worriedly.
"I suppose Lex and her brothers," Haylee huffed.
"And tell them what?"
"For them to meet us at the hospital."
"O-okay," Sam stuttered slightly.
When Haylee and Sam arrived at the hospital, she was immediately taken away for X-Rays. Sam paced around as he waited for her to come back. When she came back, the nurses said they'd be back to set her IV and get her pain killers.
Haylee held Sam's hand while she waited. Haylee hated needles. She always said that was the only thing stopping her from getting a tattoo or any other piercing besides her ears and nose. When they came back with the needle, Haylee clutched Sam's hand and looked away as they placed the IV in her wrist. Sam held her hand and kissed her forehead to try and distract her.
"You're not pregnant are you?" The nurse asked.
"No," Haylee shook her head, "I have an IUD."
"Okay. You should start to feel some relief soon."
"Aren't you getting your IUD out soon?" Sam asked.
"Supposedly in a few days."
Lex arrived shortly after the nurse left with Jonah, Cousy, and Nolan. Lex had a bemused smirk on her face the for the whole Uber ride. The Arenado brothers could not understand for the life of them why their sister seemed so smug. They was worried for Haylee and Sam. Sam's call to them around 3 am after their wedding had shocked him. Lex just sat there with a smirk on her face.
"Bitch I called it," Lex announced walking in. Sam walked over to Nolan, Cousy, and Jonah and thanked them for coming so quickly.
"Fuck you," Haylee spat.
"I think that's what Sam was doing no?" Lex laughing smacking Sam on the back.
"What?" Sam turned and looked at Lex who had tears in her eyes from holding back her laughter. Cousy put his face in his hands and shook his head as he muttered her name wanting nothing more than to disappear. Nolan and Jonah exchanged a confused look.
A knock on the door stopped her from answering. A nurse and doctor walked in together. Cousy nudged Lex into a chair as the doctor and nurse took in all the extra people in the room. Nolan quietly told Lex to be nice.
"Hello, how are you doing, Mrs. Nicholson?" The doctor asked.
"I've been better," she grumped.
"I certainly understand. Well here are the X-Rays of your spine. Did you know you have scoliosis?" The doctor's words made Lex snort which earned her a shushing from Jonah and a dirty look from Haylee.
"Yeah I found out on accident when I was 15."
"You found out on accident?" The nurse raised an eyebrow.
"Yeah. If you pull up my file, you'll find a chest X-Ray I had taken to prove I didn't have Tuberculosis," Haylee nodded.
"Why didn't you get a normal TB test?" The nurse asked.
"I was born in Russia and received shots when I was a baby that cause a false positive TB reaction. Plus every time I get one, the reaction gets worse. So I got a chest X-Ray. My doctor called and was like good news you don't have TB. Bad news, you have scoliosis, go see a specialist," Haylee explained.
"Did you ever get a brace?"
"Not a medically prescribed one."
"Okay, well if you look at the X-Ray, you can see a slipped disc right here in the curve of your spine."
"She broke her spine?!" Sam shrieked unable to contain his horror.
"It's not broken, but this herniated disc is problematic and will require surgery," the doctor responded.
"And how quickly can that get done? We're leaving on our honeymoon in a week."
"We can get it done tomorrow. You'll be in a wheelchair for about three weeks after that however."
"What does that mean for our honeymoon in Fiji?" Haylee asked.
"I honestly wouldn't recommend going until your sutures are out," the doctor rubbed the back of his neck, "you don't want anything getting in the incision. An infection in your spine could cause meningitis. Not to mention, I don't know what the medical care would be like there."
"Don't worry about our honeymoon. Let's just focus on getting your back fixed," Sam soothed, running his fingers through her hair.
"We will let you talk and be back to discuss the surgery."
As soon as the door shut, Lex burst out laughing hysterically. Haylee was shooting daggers at her. She laughed so hard she ended up on the floor. Nolan just sat there with a hand over his face leaning back. Cousy and Jonah were shocked by the news and didn't understand why Lex was laughing. Haylee got annoyed and threw a pillow at her.
"SHUT THE FUCK UP!" Haylee yelled.
"Bitch I told you! I called it YEARS ago! I knew it! I knew Sam would break your back!" She yelled gleefully.
"Pardon?!" Sam squeaked.
"Years ago, Haylee was telling me about her scoliosis, and she showed me the curve in her spine and explained everything. And I fucking told her 'sis, Sam is going to break your back on your honeymoon or some shit' and here we are," Lex stood up still laughing.
"Lex," Jonah shook his head.
"Lex, stop it," Nolan picked her up and sat her back down in the chair.
"This is not the time to gloat and say 'I told you so'," Cousy agreed.
"But it is! I also said I'm gonna come to the hospital and I'm just gonna lay on the floor laughing," Lex guaffed.
"Is this what you meant when you wished Hayls a happy birthday on Insta?" Jonah asked.
"IT SURE ISSSSS!" She sang out.
"Alexia!" Cousy smacked his face again.
"I'm so sorry," Sam looked down at his wife of nine hours.
"Don't worry about it," Haylee squeezed his hand, "my back has been acting up for a while. And I wore two vastly different kinds of shoes today."
"You fucked her so good you broke her back," the other girl laughed again, "snapped her spine like a damn glow stick."
"ALEXIA!" Nolan yelled seeing how badly Sam felt.
"Oh my god, stop it!" Jonah rubbed his face.
"Shut up, Lex. Calling you was a mistake."
"But was it?" She smirked at her best friend.
"Yes!" Cousy yelled with Haylee, "we'll be leaving now."
"Let us know if you need anything," Lex waved as Jonah pulled her to her feet and then threw her over his shoulder.
"Fuck that. I'll call Paige and Dillon before I call you again," Haylee called after them.
"Fuck you too, sis! They're going on their honeymoon!" Lex flipped her off as she left, "and don't forget—I fucking called it!"
"THEN I'LL CALL SAM AND JESS!" She yelled after them, "I hate her," Haylee huffed to Sam as he kissed her forehead.
"No you don't."
"I do. Can you call our parents and Paige and Dillon?" She asked.
"Of course. I'm so sorry. I know this isn't how we should spend our first night married."
"Don't be. It'll be one hell of a story," Haylee smiled tiredly.
