You read that right, Brooklyn Grace and Bradley Cooper are working together again! This pair of besties will be starring in the new iteration of A Star is Born, the movie that is a staple the welcomes reinvention. All iterations of the film—including the latest which will be directed by Cooper—sing the same tune, but each version has new variations on the theme, reinvents the old story.
Simultaneously a romance, a tragedy, and a rags-to-riches story with a magnetic young woman at its center, A Star is Born follows an essential arc that has, thus far, stayed the same: An aging male celebrity, hamstrung by his addictions, meets a talented, younger woman with whom he is instantly smitten.
The faces, details, settings, and character motivation may all vary, but A Star is Born keeps getting remade for a reason: it's a story of romance and mortality, with a swooning arc that borders on epic! Reportedly, both Cooper and Grace played a key role in writing, songwriting, and will do all of the performing!

A student in Matthew McConaughey's "Script to Screen" class at the University of Texas' College of Communication sent us a video of yesterday's lesson! The students in the class reportedly are HUGE fans of Brooklyn Grace, always asking questions and trying to get Professor McConaughey to talk about her! A week ago he surprised the class with a picture he took with Grace both doing the "hook 'em horns"! Two days ago Grace was in Texas, celebrating McConaughey's birthday with a big group of his friends. And the next day McConaughey's lesson plan was to talk through the movie he did with Grace years ago called Unending! A student sent in a video of the lecture and we have transcribed it for easy reading and also included the pictures and gifs he included:
McConaughey: Ok, we are going to run through the process as I have taught you of a movie from the script to the big screen, with a real life scenario of the struggles. And since y'all would never forgive me for not doing it, I'm gonna walk ya through my movie Unending.
{students cheer}
M: Ok calm down! Hush!
{students continue to cheer}
M: Ok ya, she's awesome, I know! Lemme teach y'all!
M: I won my second Oscar as the director of this film. And Brooklyn won her seventh! So that means the movie was good.
{students laugh}
M: This was my first time directing a movie. It was fun but it was hard because we didn't have a full script. Normally as the director, you sit down with the script and you write notes for the actors and what not. Well, me and Brooklyn sat down and talked through the entire script, it took all night. We had to try and imagine the script on the screen which was hard because we didn't have a lot to work with. As the lead actors we had to have a direction of where we wanted to take it. We wrote a lot of what you see on screen, but some of it was just improv. Lesson of the day: the script is not always followed down to the exact word. It depends on the director you're working with.
We knew the plot of the story being told. A story about two lovers Matt, who I play and Dani, Brooklyn's character, are separated throughout the movie and can't stop thinking back on the times that we have had with each other. At the end of the film, we reunite and it turns out, our love for each other was 'Unending', hence the title. Filming a movie with the entirety of the plot being in flashbacks was different. You have to remember that the scene is a flashback. That's why we had to film the scenes in a certain order, so we don't get confused. We filmed all the scenes where we aren't together at the very end. Why? Because it was easier to look like we missed each other. We already bonded and were great friends, so separating us, we could tap into our emotions. And then of course we shot the promo pictures in the middle of filming, where we dressed in the same outfits, which are my favorite, but also just normal ones:

Q: How long do promo pics take?
M: Ok ya that's a good question. It depends! The sooner it takes us to connect, show our chemistry, do what the photographer wants to see, the faster it takes! We were in and out of there in thirty minutes, which is very fast. Normally it takes about five hours.
Ok, so when filming a movie, it's stressful. You gotta practice lines, do some dialogue, write some notes in the margins of the script. This set was different. We spent most of our time just hanging out not doing any of that:
To some, that's risky as hell. But since we didn't have much of a script and we already knew our lines because we are professionals {class laughs} we spent our time doing whatever the hell we wanted, drinking beers, relaxing, cuddling. {class cheers} Ok, settle down. That was great because we got to bond, become good friends, and create that chemistry that we won Oscars for.
Let's start from the beginning, the film starts on a close up of B, looking back through a photo album. Looking at pictures of the two of us as our characters when they were together. Then right after, the breakup scene, where we say our goodbyes:
Both of those scenes let the viewers know that they aren't together anymore. It's giving us some background on what's going on.
Now for some clips, some of them were scripted, some of them weren't, you're gonna tell me which ones you think are which!
Scripted or unscripted?

M: Which one do you think and why?
Student: Scripted because it looks well rehearsed.
M: What makes it look that way?
S: Well you look certain in your actions and Brooklyn Grace doesn't react surprised at all.
M: This was unscripted.
{class is surprised}
There was no kiss written in the script. A judgement call was made, it felt like it was missing something. I added an intimate moment right on the spot, and in the end it made sense for a kiss to be there! To go against why you thought it was scripted, I don't hesitate because I knew the action would be a great addition for the scene and B didn't react because she's very good at her job! {class laughs}

M: What do you think and why?
Student: Unscripted because it just looks like Brooklyn Grace does it naturally like she's done it before.
M: {laughs} It is scripted.
{class is surprised again}
M: Yes it was scripted, it is just a little moment between the two of us but it sure does go a long way! It was written to add intimacy without too much, if ya know what I mean.
{class laughs}
Alright this next one was shown during the Oscar preview before it won "Best Picture". It was shown because it truly is a great shot. From the camera placement, to the angle, down to the sweetness of the action. It's a great moment in the film, was it scripted or unscripted?
{class majority yells scripted}
M: What do you say and why?
Student: Scripted because it looks normal.
M: Explain.
S: Well Brooklyn Grace kisses back quickly even though she was smiling, you seem to know she would too.
M: I hate to break it to ya pal, but it was unscripted.
{class is surprised once again}
She actually had another line to say before getting into the cab and leaving. I stopped her mid sentence, and then [points to screen].
Is there a question in the back?
Student: Ya! Um I was just wondering if you watched the YouTube video Vogue did when Brooklyn Grace talked about all her romantic scenes in all her movies? She talks about you and these scenes.
M: Really? Well damn that coulda saved me a lot of trouble! {class laughs} What does she say about this one?
Student: Well she said the same things as you did but she also said "I credit that all to him! His ability to just take control of the scene and do what makes the scene better at that moment is just incredible!"
M: My god she's adorable.
{class cheers}
M: Alright settle down! Y'all already knew that! And I'm guessing no one else has seen this video or else y'all would be getting the answers right! {class laughs}
This next one, be mature y'all! We are adults! Scripted or unscripted?
{class cheers}
M: Hey I said be mature! Scripted or unscripted?
{class majority yells unscripted}
What do you think and why do ya think it?
Student: Unscripted because there is no way in hell this was planned!
{class cheers}
M: {laughing} And why is that?
S: Well I mean Brooklyn Grace starts laughing. And I mean who wouldn't want to do that with her?
{class laughs} [McConaughey smiling]
M: You all think I would do that [points to screen] just for the fun of it?
{class cheers}
M: Ok I get it, if ya got a chance take it right? {class laughs} But this was actually scripted. Well, kinda. The script that was written just "caresses breast with face". There was no direction. {class laughs} So we had to kinda just run through it, try different things see what looked right for the moment in the scene. It was great to show the intimacy of the moment but it was what made the public question our relationship as actors. In reality we just wanted it to look as real as possible so I guess you could say we did a damn good job at that!
Alright, this is the last clip which just coincidentally happens to be the last scene in the movie! Scripted or unscripted?

Student: Scripted because there are so many parts and things happening it's not likely that you guys made it up on the spot.
M: What if I told you that this was unscripted?
{class yells in surprise once again}
Ya, ya! The script was left blank, leaving us to make the decision on what it should be. This was almost the last thing we shot, so we have brought these characters to life and we sat down and talked about the reunion they should have and this is what we decided on. And in the end we went to the editors and said that this reunion scene should be the last thing in the movie. The script had another scene but we didn't even shoot it because this was the perfect ending to the story being told.
[to a student] Question?
Student: What made you guys want to make the scene what it was? Like did you guys rehearse the movements?
M: No, no we didn't talk about it at all because we wanted it to be almost sporadic, but we did agree that it had to be very passionate and over-the-top. And that's what you see here!
Ok we are outta time and I timed this perfectly! {class laughs} The moral of this story is that no script is set in stone. It's due to change over time and for every actor they will do what they think in their opinion. Some directors will insist they keep it exact to the script, others won't. But since I directed Unending, and I was working with this magnificent person:
I trusted that the both of us would know in our expert opinions what would be best!
