Shayne

Focus, Shayne.

My arm was shaking uncontrollably. Worry and pain making a dangerous combination on my senses.

I looked back and could still see Olivia's dark and lustrous locks flying about as she ran, repeatedly falling and tripping. She wasn't going to get help in time. If something happened to me and they got to her...

The thought traumatized me so much, I had to shut my eyes for a second, focusing on what was most vital at the moment; buying her some time.

My shaking gradually reduced as I lifted the Beretta towards the approaching danger. I knew for a fact we'd been outnumbered, and that my men hadn't made it. I'd grieve them later. At the moment I had to protect a certain green eyed girl.

I strengthened my stance and swiftly entered kill-mode.

At least ten figures could be made out. I had fifteen rounds. Good thing my aim didn't suck.

The first bullet brought two down, piercing through their bodies at once. The unexpected attack caused the rest to retaliate with several loud rounds in my direction, splinters of wood flying all about me.

I took cover behind a thick oak tree and waited for a moment before aiming again. By the time I was down to two bullets in my gun, I was sure I'd eliminated or seriously injured at least eleven fuckers. They'd seemed to increase in number sometime during the firepower. And I wasn't sure how many were left.

I focused on my sense of hearing, their inability to stay quiet giving them away.

Three more were still several feet away from me, two were trying to get closer and one was only a breath away from my position.

I peeked around the tree and saw the back of the fool, trying to discover my hiding spot.

I took that opportunity to sneak up behind him. By the time he sensed me, it was too late, I'd already pressed the barrel of the gun into his back, right where his heart was positioned.

"You don't wanna do this," he bit out.

"I'm pretty sure I do," I sneered, curling an arm around his neck, which came ridiculously easy because the guy was a short motherfucker.

What stunned me was the reluctance of the few shooters that were left. They looked worried, probably for the man at my mercy.

I laughed darkly. "Seems I have myself a prize."

"If you hurt me there shall be consequences."

"Yeah, sure. I'll take my chances, little man."

"Are you sure you want that hot little bitch of yours to get hurt?"

As if a dark cloud appeared over my head, my finger pulled the trigger several times before I realized I'd only had two bullets left, leaving me defenseless and with a limp body as my shield.

I dropped the body to my feet, and the face of a dark skinned young man with empty black eyes stared back at from the ground.

I waited for any remorse to fill me but I felt nothing. What I was remorseful about though, was my death. Because if I died, there would be no one to look after the people I cared about.

My eyes remained staring down at the dead guy, waiting for the vengeful bullets of his friends' weapons to assault my body.

Only, when I looked up, I found them gone, only their backs could be seen as they sprinted through the woods, probably to go and report the sad news to whoever had sent them. As long as they were headed towards the opposite side, away from Olivia, I could breath.

But breathing suddenly became difficult.

The bullet wound under my ribs wasn't the only one. I'd received two more to the shoulder and abdomen. I hadn't even given it much thought at the time, Olivia had been my first and only priority.

I started to trek in the direction she had taken, focusing on breathing and not dying. The girl still needed me, now more than ever. The danger wasn't over, not even remotely close.

I leaned against a tree when the world swayed a little, pulling off my shirt to add pressure to my shoulder. It seemed to be bleeding the most, but I couldn't even summon the energy to aide myself. I threw away the drenched shirt.

Pathetic.

I pushed off the tree at my own taunting, but a couple of footsteps was all my body needed to finally run out of juice and fall to the ground.

With the tiniest bit of energy left in my muscles, I pushed myself onto my back and figured my last moment should be me looking up at the night sky.

My eyelids felt heavy and the sleep approaching felt deliciously inviting. When they finally closed and my mind started to wither away, my subconscious perked up at the sound of voices,  familiar voices. Good work, Olivia. That's my girl.

"She's here!" what sounded like Laura's voice shouted. I felt her come up to my side. She laughed humorlessly. "You must be out of your fucking mind if you think you're about to die on me, Shayne. Come on."

My chest started to get pumped, but I knew it was too late.

Guilt—for leaving Olivia—was the last thing I felt before everything went silent.

Short chapter? I know, but there's another one right after this one. I'm only evil to a certain degree, guys. I couldn't leave you hanging just like that. 😂😂
