There were only 24 contestants left in the exam. The third hokage then started explaining about why they have the chuinn exams.

The preliminary round will consist of one on one matches. This is not a exercise. There are 23 of you remaining so there will be 13 matches. Survival candidates of these 12 matches will move on. As proctor I'm giving a certain amount of freeway of judging the matches. If the match seems hopeless I will most likely intervene to save as many lifes as possible. Naruto explained
The name of each opponents are chosen by complete random. Before eac match these names will appear on the display behind me. Naruto explained
Sauske Uchiha vs. Yoroi : Sauske wins

Obito then sent Aoi flying into a wall.
The winner of the match is Obito Senju. Naruto said
Sakura vs. Ino: draw
Temari vs. Tenten:Temari wins
Shikamaru vs. Kin:Shikamaru wins
Ken vs. Namai
If your ready you may begin. Naruto said
Wind style great breakthrough! Ken created a huge gust of wind
Water style double blast! Namai shot blast of water from her fingers
Earth style mud wall! Ken created a huge wall of mud to block the blast
Wind style wind blades! Ken created sharp wind blades to destroy of the mud wall causeing it to hit Namai
The winner is Ken Haruno. Naruto said
Nice try sister but Ken just moves so fast. Burto said
Kiba vs. Burto: Burto wins
Neji vs.Hinata: Neji wins
Sato Senju vs. Goro
If you ready begin. Naruto said
Fire style fire ball justu! Sato then created a huge fire ball
Water style raging wave! Goro created a powerful wave of water
Water style raging wave! Sato counter the wave with her own

Garra vs. Lee: Garra
If your ready begin. Naruto said
Lee started after the fight running towards Garra but he blocked the kick with his sand. Garra then aimed his sand at Lee. Lee dodged out of the way. Lee just kept on trying to hit Garra with his taijustu.
Don't tell me done already we still hasn't been enough blood. Garra
Naruto thought " His charka it so blood thirsty". "Wait this is that same kid from the sand village with the demon sealed in him".
Lee then took his weights off. He then began moving really fast. Lee managed to land a hit on Garra but he was wearing a sand armor. Lee then started around Garra in circles.
Garra got kicked into the air but Lee. Then was grabbed by Lee bandages and been spinning around down to ground. Turned out to be a sand clone.
Lee then started opening the eight gates. He started hitting Garra like crazy until his muscles started to tear themselves apart. When Lee fell on the ground Garra was about to finsh him off with his sand coffin jutsu. Guy stepped in and stopped the attack.
The winner is Garra. Naruto said
Naruto thought " That was so close that demon so out of control".
Dosu vs. Choji: Dosu winner
That is the end of the matches. We will now explained about the final matches. Naruto said
Each of you will pick a number from Anko and then the numbers will be paired up and that will fight against. Naruto said
So each of the genin picked a number. Then looked to see who they will be fighting against.
Final Matches
1. Burto Uzumaki vs. Neji Hyuga
2.Garra vs. Sauske Uchiha
3. Kankuro vs. Shino Aburame
4. Shikamaru vs. Temari
5. Dosu vs. Obito Senju
6. Ken vs. Sato Senju
Now that you who you will be facing you have one month before the final matches. The hokage explained
So if it tournament does that mean only one of will become chuinn? Shikamaru asked
No the more matches you fight the more chances you have to become chuinn. One of you may become ir may none of you will become chuinn. It up to the leader of the village your from to decide. The hokage explained
Why is the exam in one month? Obito asked
So you will have time to rest and to time to prepare. Because everyone here now knows your techniques so this is your chance to come up with new techniques. The hokage explained
