The lights were everywhere, suspended weightless in the air. Her hand aimed for the lights. She closed her eyes, knowing she would never be able to touch them.

Wandering the pearl streets of the city, she squeezed past the crowds toward the radio tower that stood proudly in its snowy and tangerine colors.

Couples walked past her, hand in hand, and snuggled close. Small children, followed by their parents, paraded around pointing at the Christmas lights adorning the street lamps and street posts. The harmonies of the carolers could be heard near the giant Christmas tree in the center of the park.

Everyone was happy.

The city lights waltzed across the merry streets, pulsating every so often. They twirled and danced, never tiring from their fleeting bourrée. She watched them come and go; like the snowflakes that briefly met her line of vision as they fell to their deaths.

She took the elevator and shuffled onto the observation deck at the top of the radio tower. She slouched onto its icy railing and stared at festive streets underfoot, focusing on the red and green Christmas lights as they danced happily from street to street. The white snow popped out from the glowing colors, and she collected the flakes that melted in her palm.

She hopped onto the railing for a better look at the empty city she called home. The bundles of lights twinkled like stars, mesmerizing her until she felt a vibration in her coat pocket. She pulled out the phone, and her eyes shimmered warmly as they read off the bright screen.

Her vision floated up from those sweet pixels to the stars that gleamed like city lights. Or maybe they were the city lights that gleamed like stars. She held out her fingers, longing to find out.

The December air pierced through her ears, numbing her senses. All she wanted was to hold the lights in her palm.

That was all she wanted.

She felt them get closer and stretched her hand out farther, finally able to touch them.

Then she blinked.

All she saw was that glorious tower.

She was happy.
