You can say (您好） when you are talking to a person who is older than you or someone who is not close to you or someone you respect. You can say (你好） when you are talking to a person who is younger than you or someone who is of the same age.
Examples:
你好！好久不见！ = Nǐ hǎo! Hǎojiǔ bùjiàn
