May 2, middle of the night

This is what I could remember: running, running, running through the early morning streets, damp, wet and grim. The click-clacking sound of my shoes tapping raggedly against the ground. I couldn't breathe. That man's face again. Did I know him? He was running at my side. He was telling me to slow down. The carriage was straight ahead. But I was shaking my head and pushing him away. Then he gripped my shoulders and wrenched me to a stop.

"Don't you see that revenge is the only way?" His clipped words echoed in my ears. "You know what we must do, don't you?"

"I do not want to!" I was yelling now. "No matter what, I refuse!"

"Do you want to be betrayed for the rest of your life? Do you wish to allow such unseemly goings-on? You, of all people, with your pride? Come now..."

I collapsed into his arms. And then all went black.

The nightmares wouldn't release me from their grip. They were chapters in a story that was unfolding. But why? What was going on? If I wanted a good story, I would go to the bookstore.

I rubbed my eyes and read my description of the episode over and over. Then I compared it with what I had written days ago. I didn't want any part of these people and their tragic story. The feelings of sadness and loss choked me with each and every image.

I thought of Destiny and her outrageous display, which seemed to truly unleash this cascade of nightmares. This was probably part of my own overactive imagination, stimulated by the tale of Victoria and Jonathan. I was being ridiculous for remembering every detail of her monologue and for doubting my own sense of reason. I kept telling myself that my worries about the dreams were silly. After all, with Destiny's words drifting around in my head, how could I possibly have a peaceful night?
