Chapter 3-Search-Alia
My eyes opened wide as Ryan led me by hand off the uncomfortable golf cart onto the dirt road nearing a wide expanse of trees and a farm. I smiled as I realized it was a small coffee shop Ryan had probably found just for us. I wiped my eyes from the last of the tears from the ride up and I beamed at Ryan again, showing the gratitude through my eyes. I turned to look at Tasha when I saw her gasp, her eyes going all blurry.
"Ta..." I began her name to ask her what was wrong when I saw her long legs sprint toward the trees, her long body wracked
I sprinted towards her, hoping to catch her before she got lost but her legs and strength were no match for mine. Ryan shot ahead of me, and I glimpsed Tasha's shirt as she darted farther. Then I called for her and a branch hit me painfully in the face knocking me down and skinning my back where the shirt had come up. Ryan looked over at me and I told him to go on, but that was enough time for Tasha. Ryan came back minutes later, sadness crossing his face.
"She's gone." He lamented.
"I knew she would be." I said, on the verge of tears again, but not for me for her
Ryan sat down next to me the world of the forest surrounding me and him. Then after a long time, Ryan got up and sighed sadly. I could tell he blamed himself for Tasha running away.
"It's not your fault." I said "It's mine. I told her to come home; I'm such a selfish dumb-o."
"No, it's both of us, we're horrible friends." He laughed softly.
"Yeah" I agreed "Now, lets go."
He got up and offered me his hand and we started in the direction we suspected Tasha to have gone. I frowned as the forest got darker and darker.
"Wrong way," I said, "she hates the darkness."
Ryan sighed like he was about to keel over and die.
"If we run we can go faster and get to Tasha faster." I said, looking at the pink slowly setting sun.
"Faster is better!" He said.
Then he whipped me off the ground unexpectedly, running as fast as he could. He avoided the sore and bruised spot on my lower back. He ran for about five minutes before we spotted light through the trees. He set me down gently and walked out of the trees. I followed behind and spotted a big barn and a farm. We walked into the farm and we knocked on the little cabin door on the side. A short stout man with gray hair and a big belly, he looked surprised to see us.
"Um... hello, may I help you?" He said.
"Hello, we are looking for a girl." I said.
"All that is here is me and my wife." He said, but Ryan looked at him funny.
"Mister, my friend here is a little delusional, can you please take care of her while I go and fix my... uh... car." Ryan said "and I will work for your care, I grew up in Kansas."
Of course most of that statement was a lie. I wasn't delusional, he rode up in a golf cart and he grew up here, in Las Vegas.
"Sure, come in and lie down miss." He said, pushing me into his home. I frowned when Ryan waved at me and ran to the 'car.' The lady, probably the guy's wife, came up to me.
"Hello" she said "I'm Jill and over there is my husband Nicolai."
"Hello..." I said, trying to sound dazed and delusional.
"Come into our guest bedroom, and my daughter, who's about your age, will give you some fresh pajamas and make your bed."
"Thanks" I mumbled, still trying to keep up the act.
She led me to a small bedroom with two beds stuffed into the room. The room was peach colored and pictures of people on farms and red headed babies sitting on cows. I sat down on the bed and waited for the daughter to come in. Minutes later a girl with a mass of freckles dotting her pale face and messy red hair came in. She was holding two sets of sheets.
"Hi," she said "I'm Jenna."
"I'm Alia." I said.
"Wait... I thought you were Tanya or something... wait... didn't you get here earlier?" She looked really confused.
"No..." I began, and then I got it, the crumpled bed next to mine and the two beds... the clues fit together.
I got up quickly and I towered over Jenna, she was short. I looked down at her, and realized she was only about thirteen. I smiled at her.
"Where's Tanya?" I asked her, really asking for Tasha.
"In the barn somewhere or out on the field, I don't know." She said, going over to make my bed.
I ran past Jenna, thanking her briefly, I ran out to the barn. I slipped inside and checked all the stalls and climbed up to the loft, no one was there either. I slipped out again and ran to the field. Then, I saw Tasha. She was beaming her eyes closed, she was sitting atop a gray mare and she humming softly. I climbed silently on the fence and sat there, my back against the stable. I waited and waited for a long time. Tasha just kept going around and around in a circle in the small corral. She just kept humming and smiling to herself. After almost an hour she opened her eyes. Her back to me, she hopped off the horse almost dreamily. She floated off and brushed the horse and then turned around, spotting me sitting there, she gasped out of surprise.
"ALIA" she exclaimed, wrapping me in a big hug.
"Tasha! Why the heck did you run away?!" I asked hugging her back.
"Coffee shop was where me and him met." She said, not saying Emmitt's name.
"Oh Tasha I'm such an Idiot for bringing you back from Paris." I said forlornly.
"Alia, don't blame yourself, I would have gotten taken away from Emmitt anyway." She said.
I sighed.
"Do you have any idea where Adam went?" she questioned.
"Um...." I thought "My parents and him had a fight, but I don't know."
"Call your parents!!" she insisted, taking my phone from my jacket pocket.
She found parents on my contacts and pressed send dialing them. I grabbed the phone and brought it to my ear.
"Hello." My mom said sharply, but I could hear softness hiding too.
"Hi mom, um... have you seen Adam?" I asked, Tasha prompting me.
"Well, Alia, honey I have to talk to you..." She began her voice sickeningly sweet.
Suddenly a cold fear gripped me, I felt like I was doused in cold water. She hadn't called me honey or been vaguely sweet to me since I was 14 and started dating Adam.
"What Mom?" I demanded my voice as sharp as knives.
"Well, honey, come home as soon as you can and um... Adam left something for you..." She began.
"MOM, WHY DIDN'T YOU TELL ME!?" I screamed, hanging up.
"Oh my... what happened?" Tasha asked.
"Adam left something for me at my parents and they didn't tell me." I growled.
"Come on let's go." She said, a comforting tone taking over her.
She grabbed my hand and yanked me back to the small cabin. She waved over her shoulder at the mare. Then she threw open the door to the cabin and went into the kitchen where Nicolai, Jill, and Jenna were all making dinner.
"Thanks Nic for letting us stay!" Tasha said, wrapping Nicolai and Jill into a big hug.
Jenna joined in and so did I making a big bundle of people in a hug.
"Bye" I said awkwardly.
"Bye Alia and Tasha!!!" The family called at the same time.
We left only to find Ryan waiting by the field with the golf-cart. I grinned happily at him and hopped in the golf-cart.
"Hey Ry!" I said.
"Hello ladies" He said, smiling back to me.
Tasha got in the cart next to me, pulling a pony-tail into her hair, so it wouldn't billow into her face again. This time in the golf-cart I didn't cry but I felt anger at my parents.
"Ryan" I said after a while "can you take me to my parent's house?"
"Yeah Alia, but why?" he said, turning off the road to where his car was waiting.
I launched into the story as we went to the car and loaded the golf-cart into the shed behind the restaurant. We hopped in the car, cool from the night air. We drove in silence, I was tense. I didn't know what to expect from the parental units. As Ryan pulled up in front of my house I tensed even more, even though I didn't think that was possible. Tasha led me up to the walk and Ryan hung back by the car. I rang the doorbell and my mom answered, her smile already fixated in place. I frowned and the rage built up again.
"Give me whatever he gave you and I'll leave." I demanded angrily.
"Are you sure honey?" she said, sugar-coating everything.
"Yes mom. Give me whatever he left." I growled.
"Okay honey" she said, grinning at me.
She went into the living room and opened the drawer under the plasma screen T.V. She came back holding a envelope. I grabbed it from her.
"Thanks mom" I said sarcastically.
"No problem sweetie" she said.
"Bye" I muttered, practically running out of there.
I slammed the door, leaving in a huff.
I ripped open the envelope with my nails and then I yanked the letter out, sticking the envelope into my jacket pocket. I opened the letter carefully and began to read.
Dear my beautiful Alia,
I love you. Yeah, I know baby you're wondering why I'm telling you this when I left, after proposing to you no less, but I had some unfinished business to do. My parents wrote me, telling me that they want to meet with me. They are in Greenland and they told me to come. I did it because I want to tell my parents about my life and learn why they left me. Baby, you know this has been haunting me for a while why they left me with the nanny for the first seven years of my life, then why they came back for a few days and then left until now. I will be back for you and if you want me I'm yours. I also know that I should have told you, but I don't think I could bear seeing your face. I will keep the memory of your happy face before I left on the last day. Alia, if I were you I wouldn't want me back either, and I was such a jerk, and the reason I gave this letter to your parents was that maybe you would develop a better relationship with them while I'm gone. I love you Alia, always have, and always will, for the rest of my life. I will miss you deeply while I'm gone and I will pray hard that you will miss me too, although I imagine with what I did to you, you won't. You are beautiful and perfect and you're smart too. So be smart and sell the ring or something, buy yourself something beautiful and forget about me, the jerk. I love you Alia.
With Love Always,
Adam. <3
I finished the letter and stuffed the letter in Tasha's face. I was feeling dizzy and tears were on the verge of coming. All of a sudden, my feet jiggled under me and I fell. The ground rushed towards me in a scary rush. I let out a little whimper before I felt the ground collide with my head. A sharp pain rushed through me as the edges of the world started turning black, everything was swerving. My eyes were drooping as the world went black.
