It was a cold and rainy Autumn afternoon. I was the only one in the carriage my sister had just been dropped off at her friend's home. I rested my head on the glass, fat raindrops roll down. People walked down the dirt path. Holding umbrellas and books over their heads in an attempt to keep dry. There was a woman standing in the rain with a young girl in simple blue satin button up shirts and cotton trousers held up by braces the young girl's face was covered by a flat cap I watched as she clung onto a patch work teddy bear the woman was trying to get people's attention but failed I asked the driver to pull the carriage over once it came to a stop I pulled my jacket on and walked up to them "Are you ok?" I asked the girl looked up her icy blue eyes contrasted with her dark chocolate like skin she turned away and coughed violently into her arm
"Would you be able to bring us to shelter, we are travellers and need medical care." The woman said her skin colour was the same as the girl's but her eyes were like warm honey she patted the girl's back as she spat out blood I nodded and led them to the carriage they down across from me the woman dropped a green bag onto the floor and sat crossed legged
"My name is Chance, Who are you?" I asked, the woman smiled
"I'm Marlboro and this is my daughter Cradle," Marlboro said she pulled Cradle's cap back showing a few black curls tucked away the Mansion came into view Cradle was speaking in a different language it sounded like the bird folk language but I wasn't sure the carriage slowly stopped and we walked into my home removing my boots I watched as the pair slipped off their black glossy boots I led them to the Nursery I opened the door and was Angina brushing Minnie's blond curls she dropped the brush and looked at them giving them a suspicious look Minnie crawled over to Marlboro Angina stood up flattening her apron as Marlboro squatted down and lifted her up resting her on her hip Cradle coughed again blood dribbled down the corner of her mouth something in Angina's brain clicked and rushed over to her guiding her to the wooden stool I noticed there were a few rips in the shirts on the back as she was giving her medicine her cap was removed revealing black curls falling into her eyes certain parts were pinned back with hair clips Marlboro played with Minnie her black hair was straightened and in a braid resting on her shoulder a matching satin ribbon tied neatly into his at the end I walked away to my room and hung my jacket up on the coat pegs on my door I grabbed my homework and walked back to the Nursery Minnie was asleep in her crib I ran down the stairs and found everyone in the living room Cradle was coughing up blood and other things that plagued her body
"So she has a rare disease that only bird folk catch and it's rare for them to survive," Marlboro said Angina was stitching her teddy bear there was a couple rips that needed to be stitched that's when I noticed Cradle's wings small black angel like wings Marlboro had wings the same but her's were neatly folded and larger Angina nodded looking up at me she set the patchwork bear down and walked over to me taking the homework out of my hands I walked with her to the coffee table she sat down on the sofa whilst I sat on my chair my legs draped over the arm rest "That's why we travelled to the human world to get treatment here," Marlboro said with a slight smile I noticed her socks had stitches running up the sides Cradle sat up and swished water around in her mouth then spat it out she walked over to me grabbing her head
"I want to see the gardens, can you show me please?" She asked I nodded we walked to where our shoes were and pulled them on we walked into the Apple orchid weaving through the thick tree trunks I grabbed a basket and walked down the rows Cradle flying to keep up with me she soared but glided down when I stopped at the thickest tree I climbed up with make shift ladder and sat down on the Oak wood planks Cradle sat across from me I groped under the plank like desk and pulled out a large circular tin filled with sweets I set it inbetween us and grabbed a caramel I watched Cradle shuffle the sweets around looking for something in particular she pulled out a handful of candied bananas and bamboo sticks "We have these in the village," She said placing one of the miniature bananas into her mouth the rain was dying down thankfully but it was still as cold as this morning we sat for hours talking, eating, joking and picking fresh apples but after all of that she leant in close to me and whispered
"You like me,don't you," she giggled and flew off back to the Mansion with the apples
