Haley ignored it; she was used to people not noticing her. But James didn’t understand, why would he skip her name? Surely they wouldn’t ignore her here. James got up and left, murmurs of people behind him filled the room which had only contained the professor’s voice. Haley got up and ran toward him.
“Why’d you do that?” Her voice was soft yet strict, scolding, but conferring.
“He didn’t call your name! I’m sick of people ignoring you! I’m sick of the world not letting you in! There’s nothing wrong with you! Why can’t people see that! Why doesn’t anybody understand?” James started to cry.
“Why do you care?” She asked just as innocently and beautifully as ever.
“Why don’t you care!?” James yelled as his anger burst inside of him.
“Because no one ever cared about me. As soon as my dad left to Iraq my mom left! He died there! He was the only person in the world who cared.”
“I care.” James said softly. Then he did something, something he will never forget.
He kissed her.
