Surviving

Two Months Later

“Mom” Yuri found her voice calling for her mother for the second time. She stared at the woman who was seated on the chair with a wide grin on her face. “You can stop daydreaming about the wedding now”

“Ohhh I am sooo excited” Mrs. Williams cheered happily pressing Yuri’s hands tightly. The big rock on her finger clearly made a huge impact on Mrs. Williams and lit up the house. Yuri nodded slowly, she was happy that her mom was finally getting a new husband but scared that she was now getting a new father. Not that Daniel was creepy like her biological father but the change did sort of have an effect on her.

“Tell me how he proposed again?” Yuri regretted asking but she knew how her mom loves telling that story over and over again. She was in love, Yuri could see. Yuri knew exactly how it felt to be in love and she considered her mom lucky to be feeling that way. Anyone was lucky to be madly deeply in love, it was after all the best feeling in the world.

“Okay so, he stopped in front of a ring shop and asked me that he needs a huge favor from me, I was confused but when I asked what was the favor, he said he wanted to propose to his girlfriend and if I could select the one that would be the best fit out of all the beautiful rings. I literally had butterflies in my stomach, Yuri. Butterflies” Yuri chuckled as she gave her mom a huge hug. Mrs. Williams wrapped her arms around her daughter. Things were better between them, it took some time for Yuri to stand up, but when she did, she grew closer to her mom and most of all closer to Jason.

“I am so happy for you” Yuri whispered slowly.

“Will you be my maid of honor?” Mrs. Williams smiled as she asked.

“Yes, yes of course!” Yuri hugged her mom tighter. Everything was slowly falling into place. Yuri tried to cover tears of joy but it fell down her cheeks which made her wipe it away quickly. If her memory served her right, she didn’t remember the last time she cried tears of any kind of happiness. The doorbell rang interrupting mom and daughter bonding time, Yuri stood up and gave Mrs. Williams a small peck on her cheeks.

“That’s my ride, I have to go now”

“You repainted your car?” Yuri exclaimed as she sat down on the next seat of Jason’s car. His blue car had turned into black. Along with the car, Jason had made a few changes to himself as well; his dress code looks way too decent. Yuri wondered what was up with her best friend.

“Seriously, you noticed the car first?” Jason rolled his eyes which made Yuri chuckle. The argument they had two months back was the last real argument they had. Things got better after that day, Yuri began to recall how the past two months had brought a real change in her. She was growing stronger as each day went and Jason was there every step of the way. He had made up for all the times he had hurt her, Yuri knew she couldn’t stay mad at Jason anymore. She knew what Sasha had done was purely out of love and was her decision. Jason never pushed her into it.

Yuri stared at her best friend, happy that she has now found something to make life meaningful again.

“You look way too decent to be my best friend. Where is Jason and what have you done with him?” Yuri demanded an answer strictly but ended up laughing too loud.

“Look at you, enjoying life and shit” Jason sneered.

“You do know that she’s the daughter of a priest and she isn’t allowed to date so no matter how you decent you look, her father can smell your dirty mind” Yuri remarked. The girl Jason likes just happens to be the most religious girl on the planet. And even if Jason washed himself seven times with holy water, he isn’t getting a shot.

“You out of all people telling me that it’s impossible make me want to throw up. Need I remind you, you fell in love with your alter” Jason’s words caused a little burn in Yuri’s heart but she consumed it in. She could see the apologetic look on Jason face and before he could say ‘I’m sorry’ she spoke.

“Maybe, you’re right. Just don’t ruin the poor girl with your devilish charms” Yuri smirked.

“I really like her, she looks so pretty and so beautiful” Jason said as he pulled over. They both got out of the car and walked towards the place where they’ve been going every weekend for the past month. Yuri glanced over at the girl who was a brunette with a braided hair wearing a blue dress long enough to cover her knees. She smiled shyly looking at Jason who winked at her.

“You’re late” Mr. Johnson stood in front of them and said roughly. He was the father of Paige Johnson whom Jason is so attracted to. “Now come on, we need to organize this event well” Jason and Yuri quickly went inside to do the jobs they volunteered for.

“Just so you know, I’m only sticking around because of Paige” Jason whispered behind Yuri’s back. She knew it wasn’t true, despite Paige; the whole volunteering at a charity event was in fact Jason’s idea. When Yuri asked Jason to promise her to continue her bucket list, he had made a promise to himself that if she makes it, they’d do it together. Yuri was however doing this for Sasha, and herself. It seemed like doing some good out there, lessened the pain.

“You and I both know that’s not true. You’re sticking around because of Mr. Johnson” Yuri smirked again while handing out the flyers to different people on the street.

“You’re a devil”

“Get over it, you love me”

“Get her to like me then” Jason eyed at Paige, who was now staring right back at him.

“Hell no, leave that poor girl alone already”

“Wait a minute, wait a minute . . . is this because you like her instead and want me to back off?” Jason crossed his arms as he asked the world’s most ridiculous question. Was he feeling threatened by Yuri?

“Me? Like her? Are you crazy?” Yuri almost yelled out her words.

“No, you might like her, last time I checked you were a lesbian” Jason pointed out. Meanwhile Yuri stared at him in disbelief.

“I will only like and love one girl in my entire life and that’s Sasha. So don’t you worry, I won’t be stealing any of your potential girlfriends”

“I thought you moved on . . .”

“I moved on, I did. I let go of pining over her death and thinking life was unfair. But she’s a part of me I can never erase Jason. I’ll always love her. I’ll always miss her” It was the reality set for Yuri, no matter how hard it was there was nothing she could do to make her forget Sasha, or her feelings towards Sasha. Even though the subject of Sasha was a sensitive topic, Yuri knew she’ll be able to overcome it eventually. But she wasn’t ready to let go yet, heck ever.

“I miss her too, even when she scolds me most of the time. She’s so fearless, so brave” Jason smiled as he remembered a memory of Sasha.

“Yeah that she is. I like talking about her; it makes me feel closer to her. Something in my gut says she can hear me somehow”

“Well if she can hear you or see you right now, she’d be damn proud. Two months ago, you were stinking with soo much alcohol, I was thinking of buying you a perfume case for your birthday”

“You’re so not funny Haynes” Yuri rolled her eyes. The next few minutes none of them talked because Mr. Johnson passed them by. He evaluates everything that happens, but luckily Yuri and Jason gets everything done on time.

“Have you seen Belle?” Jason muttered quietly.

“She checks up on me via text, Dr. Nick says she asks about my health very often. My monthly visits are becoming sort of fun cause he offers me lollypop now.” Yuri stated. Visits with Dr. Nick haven’t been easy either, he advised her about alcohol and also he often asked about Sasha.

“I barely see her, I guess she’s grieving in her own way. And speaking of lollypop, I’m craving some sweet food. Do you think I should go and ask Paige if she’d go out to eat with me?”

“I feel pity for the girl, for she is about to embark on the worst journey of her life when she start dating you”

“Thanks for the vote of confidence, Yuri. I truly appreciate it. Not”

-                                                       - - - - - - - - - -  - - - - - -

“Text me later?” Jason questioned as soon as Yuri got off his car. She was finally home after a busy day. Before she could answer, she could see a female figure at the corner of her eyes. Yuri gave Jason a fake smile realizing why he said to text him later. As soon as he left, Yuri turned around to face the girl.

“Whitney, what made you down here?” Yuri asked huskily. The last time she saw Whitney was about three weeks ago, when she finally had the guts to go and apologize how lamely she had rejected Whitney in front of the school. Yuri knew she was still recovering that’s why as soon as reality hit her, she apologized to everybody. Everybody thought she was back to normal but the truth was ugly as her life now is.

“I came to see you” Her reply made Yuri a lot uncomfortable than she thought she would be. When did all the popular girls become so hopeless romantics?

“Oh, here I am then. What’s up?” Yuri tried to keep it simple.

“I wanted to check up on how you were doing, that’s all. Belle told me, you still visit her brother. “Whitney smiled as she spoke. A lot changed over the past couple of months, and Yuri could see Whitney’s attempt to change, which was nice.

“Did Belle ask you to check up on me?” Some part of Yuri was curious to how Belle was doing. It must’ve been tough on her as well.

“No, I wanted to see how you were doing. Why would you think that?”

“No, it’s nothing. I just feel like Belle tries to ignore me but she checks up on me here and then. Tell her I appreciate it and that I hope she’s doing well”

“Yeah sure. I will”

“Oh and Whitney . . .”

“Yeah?”

“Thank you for checking up on me, I truly appreciate it but I am fine. There’s no more tumor in my brain. I’m fine. “

“I’m glad you’re fine. And so is Belle. I don’t know what happened between you two but she cares about you even though she ignores you. Belle stays at home, and barely goes out. We meet at the park whenever she decides to get fresh air and talk. So I know that deep down she’s having a rough patch. She talks about the whole tumor thing a lot. I guess it affected her more than anyone else, but don’t worry; I’m helping her through it”

“Since when did you guys get so close?” Yuri wondered out loud.

“Aw, don’t tell me you’re jealous Yuri” Whitney let out a small laugh.

“You wish I was, Whitney.”

“Okay so I had feelings for you, major feelings. But I’m over it now. So don’t keep your hopes up Williams”

“Good to know” Whitney laughed as she waved Yuri goodbye. Yuri couldn’t call Whitney a friend yet, not after everything that has happened between them but Whitney was becoming more likeable. Everything was changing, but Yuri wondered if she could adapt to it. Yuri walked inside her house and made her way into her pink room.

Being back in her room, Yuri took a look at the camera that sat at the corner which was a constant reminder of Sasha. Pain gushed inside her body but she let it. She cried every night still but nobody knew about it. Yuri made her way on to her bed; crossing her legs she closed her eyes. She remembered Dr. Nick telling her to meditate, cause the only way to control your emotions is to calm your body and be in control. Yuri let out a huge breath silently, she was in her happy place, and it was the only time of the day she felt at ease. Her thoughts grabbed every image of Sasha, she recalled how her voice sounded like. How her lips tasted like and most of all how bubbly her personality was. Yuri was in control of her body, she didn’t feel helpless, she didn’t feel sad but she was now calm.

She tuned out the rest of the world. Now it was silence that consumed her ears. The sound of her breathing was the only sound she could hear. She could feel her heart beating, in fact she could hear it silently. Yuri enjoyed meditating, she enjoyed how calm it made her feel, how focused she could be. But her meditation came to a halt when she heard a familiar voice that echoed in her mind.

“Yuri . . .”

It was as if the rest of the world had stopped moving, the earth wasn’t rotating and there were no oxygen left. Yuri gasped and opened her eyes, she felt her heartbeat rising. It couldn’t be, it can’t be . . . it was just an imagination. Thoughts ran through her mind like never before. She knew if she swam under the piles of lost hope now, she would forever be lost.

“Yuri . . .” There was that voice again. It was no doubt the voice of Sasha, the voice she missed so much. Yuri felt her heart sink, she felt herself tear apart from within. She knew she wasn’t just imagining this anymore. But how? How was this possible? Was Sasha back?

Please be back, begged every part of her soul. She needed to be reunited with her soulmate.

There wasn’t any time left to think, so Yuri hurried into the desk and grabbed a pen and a paper. She scribbled down the only thing she found logical.

“Sasha? Are you back?”

She stared at the paper and blinked for a few times. Nothing. She closed her eyes and called out to her and waited. Nothing. Desperate now, she tried to find a heavy object and knock herself out. But something stopped her from doing so. She knew she can’t risk heavy blows to her head after the operation. Most of all, she knew better. Yuri heavily panted while picking up her phone to call Jason. She felt the need to share this little incident. Out of all emotions, she recognized anxiousness and excitement did not go well together.

“Yuri . . .” Her voice echoed again giving Yuri goose bumps. Her phone slipped from her hands while landing on the floor. Tears dropped down her cheeks as she hoped and prayed that the girl of her dreams just may be coming back to her.
