* THIS IS A LONG CAHPTER AND HAS MANY ERRORS, REMEMBER MY WORK IS UNEDITED*
My medications got increased after I started vomiting non-stop from the chemo. I always felt tired and I can't even count how many times I've just closed my eyes to rest them for and minute and fallen asleep in class. Lucky grew and I loved her even more. She was always at my side and knew when something was wrong. Right now I was in my new sweater and jeans outfit with my thinning hair in a teal bow. I always felt cold and feverish and despite the millions of medications I took, I always felt kind of sick. It was offical I hated cancer. Lunch time finally rolled around and I left class lucky being good and staying at my heal instead of tugging on her leash like she'd done in the beginning. I went to my locker and pulled out my lunchbox. I didn't like school food any more it made me feel sick so my brother always made me a sandwich, cut some strawberries, packed some chips, a few oreos and a soda to keep me awake in my afternoon classes. I felt someones hand fold over my eyes and heard a fake squeaky voice say guess who. I smiled and thought. Did he really think he could get me?
"Connor," I guessed I heard a groan and the fingers pulled away.
"You always get me," he said with a small smile.
"Thats because your voice is so recognisable," I replied. He nodded.
"Did you take your pills?" He asked trying to help me keep track.
"I did but I have a few I have to take with lunch, thanks for reminding me," I said with a small smile. He nodded again seeming distracted.
"Hey, I'll meet up with you later," He smiled and the lightly jogged away. I pondered his strange actions as I walked to the large noisy cafeteria. He seemed so distant lately on stopping to say hi, bye, didi you take you pills, stuff like that. As always Melanie just kept getting worse. Everyday it was something new, as if I wasn't already insecure! Once she'd finally excepted the fact that I had cancer, she started saying I was not actually that sick and just trying to get attention, but honestly what kind of awful person would fake something like cancer? I took a deep breath and pushed open the doors to the cafeteria. I walked over to a table and sat down I first pulled out the little portable bowl for lucky and poured some water from my water bottle in it then I started to pull out my lunch. I took a bite and started to chew. I took my little pouch of pills from my bag and took out the five medications I needed. When I looked up again, chelsea was sitting down across from me and Logan was making his way to out table.
"So what are you going to where to Home Comeing?" Chelsea asked with a giddy smile. I shrugged.
"Probably something not form flattering and sparkly. I don't want to draw too much attention," I explained.
"Oh come on give yourself some credit, you have a great figure and you're beautiful, but anyway, I have made us an appointment with a Jovani retailer and we are going to get our homecomeing dresses!" She exclaimed with a smile.
"Oh wow that's... great, isn't Jovani a really expansive brand?" I questioned I had lots of money from what our parents left me and Blake but Chelsea had always been livng with the money saving mindset because her family didn't have much money.
"Yeah but, I talked to you brother and he really wants you to have a great time at homecoming so he said he would buy my dress, your dress and Jessicas dress!" She said with a broad smile.. I just laughed and gently shook my head of course Blake would do that.
I woke up extra early ton saturday morning to go to my chemo session then shopping with Chelsea. I decided to dress up for the occasion so instead of my normal just woke up jeans and sweatshirt look I went for classier overalls and a black and creme striped shirt underneath. I had been back home for two weeks and my hair had started to fall out in chunks. I was embarrassing so as always I put on one of my many beanies. I chose a turqouise beanie this time. I filled my large turquoise fauxleather bag with my medicine wallet, a water and a soda, my phone and my emergency contact list. I took grabbed my lip gloss and applied a coat before shoving it along with a blanket into my bag. I grabbed a book and put it in. I threw my bag on my queen bed and went towards my jewlery box. I looked at my face in my small side mirror as I put on my earrings. Even the concelear couldn't hide the bags under my eyes. I put on a light necklace and stood up. I grabbed my bag and walked down the stairs with the support of my brothers arms. My ankles had been bothering me alot lately. Once we got down stairs I slid on my pair of Chiara Ferragni python skin loafers. I walked out my brother locking the front door behind me. I slid into my brothers sleek black car and towards the familiar hospital we went. As we drove I realized something was missing. Connor always came to chemo with me, for mental support and entertainment. I felt like my sickness was bringing us closer and Melanie was tearing it apart, every free moment he had was spent with Melanie and only chemo was spent with me. I gues he'd forgotten about that too now.
The automatic doors to the hospital slid open and I walked in with Blake we walked to the reception desk and signed in. Flora met up with us giving Blake a peck on the cheek then we went to the area where I had my Chemo done. I took a seat and Mrs. Oliver came in moments later.
"Hello ms. Brooke how are you today?" She asked with a smile.
"I'm good but I've been feeling really tired lately and my ankles have been hurting," I replied. She nodded.
"Unfortunatly those are some common side effects of chemotherapy, if you would like I can get you some crutches or a wheel chair and Oh My Gosh, I'm sorry I forgot to excuse you from PE I'll write you a note for that," She said.
"It's okay," I said as I rolled up my sleeve and she started hooking up all of the tubes to the chemo drip and I sat still in the massage chair while she poked my arm with the IV-like needle. I pulled out my book and turned on the light back massage mode of the chair. Flora and Blake started talking. They both were smiling and Flora was asking him to go to her graduation in 1 month.
"Hey, It's Flora's morning break we're going to go get some coffee do you want a muffin or something?" Blake asked as the stood up.
"No, I'm good," I replied with a smile. The waved good bye and left leaving me alone with Mrs. Oliver. Once She had filled out all of my papers and things we did a small check up. She sat down across from me and pulled out a little notebook.
"How have you been feeling besides fatigue, naseau and soreness?"She asked.
"Well I've been feeling feverish and ticky. My hands and eyes twitch often," I said. Hmm, she mused.
"That culd be a side effect or something else, how have you been doing in school?" She asked.
"I've been doing average, I missed alot so I'm still catching up, I'm struggling in chemistry and math but I'm doing just fine in all my other classes," I answered. She nodded. Shee continued asking questions like this until Blake and Flora came back and the drip ran out. We scheduled a check up appointment in two days and then we went out to the parking lot. Dr. Oliver had given me a pair of crutches so only Blake walked. It felt good to not have all the weight on my sore ankles. Chelsea and Jessica were suppossed to pick me up and Blake was going to do who knows what. The cold wind in the early November air whipped across my cheeks and I pulled my jacket tightly around me.
"Are you cold?" Blake asked with concern. I nodded. He took of his jacket and held it out towards me.I smile.
"Thanks. Are you sure you don't need it?" I asked.
"Nah, I'm good," He replied smiling. We sat in a comfortable silence for the next minute until Jessica's familiar black car came up. It was easy to Identify her anyway, her long, pin-straight brown hair streaming out the window and her wide green eyes. The car pulled up and the window rolled down exposing Chelseas soft face and auburn hair.
"Get in girly we're going for a ride," Jessica said with a smile as wide as her face. And in I went.
The elevator doors opened and we stepped in, Chelsea pressed the button for floor 9. The elevator zoomed upward making me feel slightly queasy. The elevators stopped soon enough and we excitedly exited into the lavishly decorated dress shop. We went towards the beautiful reception desk where a woman in a white blazer and champagne dress sat typing on a large Mac computer.
"Um, Hello, we're here for a consultation with the Jovani retailer," Chelsea said politely. The woman looked up and smiled.
"Yes, I see right here that you are booked for an appoinment today at 11:00, in exactly 5 minutes, would you come right this way," She said with a smile getting up from her chair and coming around the counter. She shook each of our hands then guided us past the sections of other top brands and through a large doorway to a section of the store that had racks of dresses along the walls, a sitting area for guests and a large half hexagon shaped mirror. We all sat down on the elegant creme leather couch and sset our bags down. Another woman in a crisp navy dress that had a very low dipping back walked in.
"Hello girls, I'm Layla Mcumming but you can call me Layla," She said with a smile that revealed her pearly white teeth.
"Hi, I'm Jessica, this is Chelsea and Brooklyn," Jess said pointing to each of us.
"Great! So I hear you are here for Home Coming dresses?" She asked.
"Yes, that's what we're looking for," Chelsea replied.
"Okay, so I'll take you to the short dress section and get you each your own consultant, follow me," She said. She took us through a little curtain of fringe into a smaller room that contained 3 younger woman talking in hushed voices and a bunch of short dresses.
"So, Brooklyn, you'll have Lucy," She pointed to the girl with blonde hair that was straight and stopped just below her shoulders. The girl Lucy came over with a large smile and gave me two air kisses around my cheeks. She stood by my side until the Layla had introduced the other two consultants than me and the girl separated. I was pulled into a small space with a curtain and a replica of the mirror outside. Their were 2 seats and a smaller platform, most likely for the person trying on the dress.
"Have a seat," Lucy said. I smiled and leaned my crutches agianst the wall, then did as she told and sat down. She sat next to me, her pleated black skirt going out in all directions. She smoothed the previously mentioned skirt and took out a little notebook.
"Okay so, I don't want to force yo to wear a dress you don't like so what is it you're looking for exaclty?" She asked.
"Well, I want to keep it simple, not to much bling and not something super form flattering, I also don't want the clor to be, like, s bright that I stand out," I added.
"Why?! You have a beautiful body shape and if you took that beanie off and did your hair up real nice you would look like a million bucks!" She said with a smile. I hated it.
"Listen, Lucy, I won't look like a million bucks so please just give me something nice but not attention drawing, I already have more attention the I want,"I said, mumbling the last part. Lucy's face fell but she nodded.
"Alright, let's go look at some dresses," She said trying to sound like what I'd said made no difference. We walked back out to the short dresses, where both Chelsea and Jessica were already looking. Lucy led me over to some dresses that were so ugly, she clearly didn't understand what I'd meant.
"Lucy, this is a little too... understated, I want simple not grandma," I said with a small laugh. She laughed too, visibly relieved that these dresses werenn't what I was looking for.
"You know what, how about you look through the dresses and then I'll help you try them on and get new ones," She said smiling and wrnkling up her nose. I laughed, I liked her, she was easy to be around.
"That sounds nice," I replied. She smiled again and walked over to the girl Layla. I shuffled through the dresses. I picked out 6 dresses. Each not to sparkly or showy. Lucy walked over to me and together we went back to the dressing room. Lucy hung up the dresses and handed me a robe. She then walked out and shut the curtain. I took off my clothes and went to put on my robe but couldn't help and stare at my reflection. Had I always looked this... sick? My beanie was still on but I looked skinny, I hadn't had much of an appetite lately. Normally just ate the strawberries and sandwich out of my lunch. I should start eating more. My wrist looked tiny and my skin looked too pale. I shook my head and put the robe on. I slid the curatin open a peek and Lucy came back in.
"I like your picks!" Lucy said after taking a look at the dresses I had choosen.
"How about we try this on first," She said picking out the most non-me dress I had choosen. I stepped into the blue and pink appliqué. It was nice, but it wasn't me enough.
"So what do you think?" Lucy asked bubbling with excitment.
"It's really pretty but I think it'll draw too much attention, I don't know it's just not what I'm looking for," I said.
"Well it would look better without that silly hat," She said yanking the beanie off my head. I heard her gasp and saw her hand fly to her mouth. I dropped into one of the seats and put my head in my hands. She shakliy held the hat out and I took it from her hand. I was surprise when she sat next to me and started patting my back.
"I'm so sorry, I'm so impulsive, I shouldn't have. I understand, my mom had breast cancer, she died 3 years ago," She paused and a tear ran down her cheek," It was hard watching her go through chemo and struggle, I hopw you get better, that's what my mom would have wantedme to say. So instead of dwelling on it, how about we move on to the next dress, you're right this one isn't what you're looking for," She said. She pulled out the next one. It was a pretty red and the top was full of silver beading . The chiffon was a nice flowy fabric and the dress wasn't to showy. I really liked it. I put the dress on and Lucy zipped it up the side. I smiled it was really pretty, the fabric moved well and it wasn't to flashy.
"What do you think about this one?" She asked.
"The beading is nice and I really like it but I'm not sure about the tightness of this wa-" She cut me off.
"It's not the one, you have to LOVE the dress and you just said you liked it, how about we try on... this one," She pulled out another one that was blue and green. That one and the next 2 were no's also. The fifth one I tried on was the best I had tried so far. It was creme and strapless with a floral-ish embroidery out of a tan/pink color and a boxpleat that ending at my waist line. The dress had that was made of jewels.
"So?" Lucy smiled... again.
"It's the definatly the best so far, I love the simplisity but I'm not sure if it will look so good with my hair in a few weeks, with so much skin showing I'm not sure," I said. We tried on the last too and finally I found the one.
"I love this one," I said jumping up and down. I gave Lucy a hug and smiled.
"I love it too," She said. I was white with a pink embroidery layer on top a coral ribbon went around the waist and the necklie plunged. The cap sleeves were as wide as y shoulders and my whole back was covered. The plunging neckline added just the amount of skin I wanted and the sleeves and covered back kept it modest.
"Well, why don't we go out to the big mirror and see what your friends picked out," Lucy said. She opened the cutain and we stepped out. I went over to the large mirror and observed the dress from all angles. Jessica stepped out moments later in champagne dress with lots of beading and a low dipping back that had a strap of tool going across the back and a layer of the same tool around the tight fitting bottom part of the dress. She smiled and ran over.
"You look great Brookie!" She said throwing her arms around me. I heards a small squeak of excitment as Chelsea came over in a white, short, strapless floral applique dress.
"You guys look amazing, do you like mine?" She question giving us a twirl. We laughed and the 3 consultants and Layla clapped. We took pictures in front of the window overlooking the bright, Colorado mountains. We then payed for the dresses and walked out to the car. I slid in shotgun and Jessica took the back. Chelsea started the car and looked towards us. She poulled her sunglasses down.
"Who's ready for the best Home-Comeing ever?" She aksed.
