AND THE DUCK WALKED UP TO THE LEMONADE STAND AND HE SAID TO THE MAN RUNNING THE STAND, 'HEY! GOT ANY GRAPES?'....

....*cough* well anyway here's Beth...Enjoy!

*Beth's POV*

Ash's big brown eyes landed on me, wide and full of astonishment.

“What-What the hell-”

He went on like that for a while. Well, I could hardly blame him for it really. He had just been attacked by a pair of werewolves, if he weren’t scared he’d have been an idiot. He kept babbling for a while, a good ten minutes I should say, every so often looking at the dead wolves on the floor.

Finally, he stopped stammering.

Instead, he only looked at me, wide and wondering.

“Why do you have a gun?”

My mouth nearly dropped in disbelief. I had just saved him from becoming dog food and all he thinks about is my gun?

He asked a different question “What are you doing here anyway?”

That snapped me back to reality.

What was I doing?

I leaned in closer to him, so our faces were barely inches apart. He leaned back slightly trying to put more distance between us, but I grabbed him gently on the back of the neck holding him in place.

I put all of my Influential Power into my voice.

“You left the library late finishing a project for school.” I made my voice as smooth as possible. “You dropped your bag in the parking lot. You went into the alley to go home. You don’t remember anything else.”

He blinked, dazed, his face remaining emotionless.

While his mind was recovering from the Influence, I raised the butt of my gun over his head and struck him down.

Sorry, Ash.

It was either that or the whole of his memories of today got erased. I was good at getting the people I Influenced to do what I wanted, but changing and erasing memories were a lot harder. It tired you out easily of you weren’t used to it. And if you didn’t have that much power, like me.

I tucked my gun back into my waistband of my jeans and pulled my shirt back over it.

“Wow,”

I looked up to see Cole sitting on top of the chain fence that closed off the parking lot, his long legs dangling off the chain link metal. Cole was rather tall, taller than most guys anyway. He had a beautiful face that attracted more than a fair share of female attention. With high cheekbones, perfectly toned body and luminous blonde hair that fell unintentionally seductive over his crystallised blue eyes, he was every girl’s dream. Too bad for them, he was extremely choosy about women.

A short laugh escaped my throat.

“How long have you been sitting there?”

He nodded to the dead wolves. “Long enough to see you play John Wayne and knock the kid’s lights out,”

Letting go of the fence, he fell gracefully to the floor and landed on his toes.

A whoosh of wind signalled Garnet’s arrival, her short dark hair slightly ruffled from running at high speed. “What’d I miss?”

Her chocolate brown eyes eyed the two wolf bodies with disappointment.

He stuck out her lower lip in a slight pout. “You could’ve waited for us.”

“Sorry, I’ll try to remember wait for you some the next time a human gets attacked by a pair of mutts.”

“Speaking of which,” Cole stepped over to the bodies on the floor. He approached the brown wolf and nudged it with his foot.

“This one is clearly is from the Earth pack,” he looked over to the black wolf on his other side. “But this one is a Midnight.”

Garnet went over to have a look for herself.

“Why would wolves from two separate packs be hunting together?”

That was a good question. Wolves were very territorial. It was unheard of for different packs to be seen at the same time, let alone to hunt as pairs.

A thought came to me “Do you think they’re mates?”

Cole looked up from the dogs to me, and then shrugged.

“They could be. Unofficial of course, there is no way their leaders would authorise a union between the two packs. Especially Earth and Midnight, after all they’re not exactly allies.”

I almost laughed at the thought. “No way, those two packs have been rivals for centuries. But still, that doesn’t mean we don’t have a Romeo and Juliet situation here.”

Garnets eyes turned dreamy.

“A forbidden love,” She smiled at the two bodies “how romantic.”

Cole rolled his eyes “You hopeless sap.”

Garnet’s eyes narrowed to daggers. Cole stared her down, unfazed. Nothing ever got to him. Cole’s crystal blue eyes glanced up at me.

“So what’s the plan boss?”

I lazily stretched out my muscles. “Well, we need to get rid of the body in the parking lot.”

A loud groan came from Cole.

“Do I have to do it?”

“We can’t exactly leave it there.”

I snapped my gaze to Garnet, who was giggling quietly from beside him.

“I don’t know what you’re laughing about. You’re taking the mutts back to the house.”

Her face completely dropped. “Oh come on!”

It was now Cole’s turn to laugh.

“Careful you don’t get fleas!” He smoothly dodged a nose jab from her.

She turned to face me. “What’re you going to do?”

I nodded to Ash, who was still laying unconscious face first in the gravel.

Garnet’s eyebrows shot up.

“Ooooooo, I get it. You want some alone time with Mr. Dreamy.”

“Very mature, actually I need to get him back to his home.” I picked up one of his arms and let it flop. “He can hardly get there on his own, can he?”

Garnet giggled. “Yeah but-”

“Ok!” Cole interrupted “That’s enough. Some of us have got a body to bury.”

And with that, he made a run for the fence and leapt straight over it, as gracefully as ever.

“I should be back in a couple of hours. I’ll meet you and Cole there.” I hesitated a moment “Can you ask Zane if the Astros can take over?”

A smile pulled at Garnet’s lips

“Oh he’s going to love that, he’ll think I like him or something.”

“Ha, you like everybody, Garnet.”

She gave a snort of laughter. “Not him.”

I rolled my eyes at her. I reached down and swung Ash into my arms.

“Just ask him ok?”

“He won’t be happy, you know that right?”

“I’m not scared of Zane.”

“That makes one of us.” she added under her breath.

Before Garnet could speak again, I leaped onto the fence then raced across the rooftops to Ash’s house.

His house hadn’t changed much, some extra dahlias and rose bushes in the front garden, that were most likely planted by his mother, but that was the only real difference.

I jumped down from the roof onto the balcony outside his bedroom and opened the French doors.

Wow, his room was a mess. There were clothes thrown all over the floor and a stinking, overflowing trashcan in the corner.

Ignoring the mess, I pulled back the covers on his bed and laid him down. Carefully, I took off his coat and slipped off his shoes, then put the cover over him.

As I was about to leave, I stopped and looked at him. His face looked so peaceful when he was asleep. His chestnut hair falling gently over his eyes, his lips slightly parted as he breathed so softly.

Like an angel.

A reflection of light flashed in the corner of my eye.

A framed photo sat on his bedside table. I picked it up to have a closer look at the picture. It was a photo from last year, of Ash and me.

I remembered this. We’d just come back from our school trip to Paris. We were both standing in front of the Eiffel Tower, grinning and holding our little models of the monument.

I looked so different then. My hair a strawberry blonde that looked bright orange in this picture.

But he’d kept it. I’d thought he’d thrown it away.

“Ash,” I shook my head.

I checked his digital clock. Crap! Was it really that late?

It was almost midnight! I was supposed to meet Cole and Garnet back at the house by now.

I jumped up from his bed and headed for the balcony, glancing back once over my shoulder.

Ash Gautier, you’ll never know me again.

It was time to go.

And with one leap and I was off into the night.
