Chapter Two | Halloween

Halloween night. My favourite night of the year.

The next day at school, Max and I skate past everyone in the hallways, making them move out of the way and we skate to our lockers. Our lockers were a few lockers away and I sighed when mine happened to be next to the Ghostbuster boys.

I put my skateboard into the locker as like Max did. Two out of the four Ghostbusters smiled at me and I ignored them and closed my locker before walking towards my twin sister.

"Those guys are getting weirder and weirder each day we see them," I chuckle and Max nodded, agreeing before slamming her locker door shut making the whole room look at us.

She linked arms with me and then dragged me away, I let out a sigh and walked past the staring students.

It was now lunch and I approached my locker with Max following me. "I really don't like-" She begins to say but then there was cough and we both turned our heads to see the two out of four Ghostbusters smiling at us.

Max and I give us side glances. "Um... hi, Max and Aspen. I'm Dustin, and this is..."

"Lucas," Lucas answered nervously.

"Yeah, we know." Max pressed her lips together. "The stalkers."

"Uh, no. Actually... we weren't stalking you." Lucas lied and I rolled my eyes.

"No, we were just concerned because, you know, you guys are new and all." Dustin continued the lie.

"Y-Yeah," Lucas stammers. "For your guys' safety,"

"Mm-hm," Dustin nodded. "There are a lot of bullies here."

"So many bullies," Lucas rambled on. "It's crazy!"

"Yeah,"

I looked up and down their costumes. "Is that why you're wearing proton packs?"

"Well, these's don't function." Dustin tells us. "But... I do have this handy-dany little trap here." He brings out his trap. "And look, it even opens and closes. Look, look, look." Dustin opens and closes it. "Voila! It's cool, right?" Max and I gave no reaction. "No? Okay. but um, so we were talking last night, and you guys are new here, so you probably don't have any friends to take you trick or treating and you're scared of bullies, so we were thinking that it would be okay if you guys came with us."

"It'd be okay?" Max narrowed her eyes at Dustin.

"Yeah. Our party's a democracy, the majority voted you guys can come." Dustin clearly didn't get the tone in Max's voice.

"I didn't realise it was such an honor to go trick or treating with you guys." Max snaps sarcastically.

"Yeah, I mean, we know where to get the full-sized candy bars." Dustin grinned. "We figured you'd want in."

"That's presumptuous of you," I crossed my arms.

"Yeah." Dustin pressed his lips together. "Totally. Uh, so... you guys will come?"  I closed my locker and turned around, rejecting their offer and Max had followed. "We're meeting at the Maple Street cul-de-sac at 7.00! That's 7.00 on the dot!"

After we were a wee away from them, I let out a chuckle. "You're such a sarcastic bitch," I wrap an arm around her arm. "I love you."

-

"You're late." Billy grumbles to us as we approached his car, carrying our skateboards.

"Yeah, we had to catch up on homework," Max replies.

"Jesus, I don't care." Billy tells us. I glared at him but he wasn't facing our way. "You're late again, and you're skating home. Do you hear me?"

"Loud and clear," I mutter before we both jumped in the back of his car, putting our skateboards on the ground and he climbed into the driver's seat and we drove off.

We were 10 minutes down the road, Billy speeding full speed which got on my nerves. He knows we hate his fast driving.

"God, this place is a shithole." Billy tells us.

"It's not that bad," Max speaks.

"No?" Billy raised an eyebrow at us. He pulled down the window next to us with the buttons and smelled the... well, not so fresh air. "Hmm, you smell that Max and Aspen? That's actually shit. Cow shit."

"I don't see any cows," I retort before I could stop myself and he puts up the window.

"Clearly, you haven't met the high-school girls." Billy scoffs. "So what, you guys like it here now?"

"No," Max replied.

"Then why are you guys defending it?" Billy queries.

"We're not," I grumbled, leaning back in my seat.

"Sure sounds like it." Billy says.

"It's just, we're stuck here, so..."

"Hmm, you're right." Billy agreed with Max. "We're stuck here. And whose fault is that?"

"Yours," we both quietly mutter.

"What'd you twats say?" Billy demanded.

"Nothing." We say in sync and Billy glared at us.

"Did you say it's my fault?" I could feel the tension rising between the three of us.

"No," Max remarked.

"You know who's fault it is." Billy replied sharply. "Say it. Max... say it. Say it!" Billy turned around and we both flinched at his sudden volume. And then he steps on the pedal even harder.

My mouth opens slightly when I saw the three Ghostbusters biking ahead of us. "Billy, slow down." I demand.

"Oh, these your guys' new hick friends?" Billy laughed.

"No! We don't know them!" Max lied, her eyes widening. Which was true, we don't know them.

That seemed to piss Billy off even more. He was speeding towards the teenagers, making me feel sick. They seemed to notice us and started to pedal faster, too.

Max grabbed onto my hand and squeezed while I was leaning forward, my mouth wide open.

"I guess you guys won't care if I hit 'em, then?" Billy smirks making my heart pound. "I get bonus points, I get 'em all in one go?"

"No, Billy, stop this isn't funny!" I yell. He looked at me before revving his engine again and still speeding towards them.

"Billy, come on, stop it." Max pleaded. "It's not funny. Stop!"

"Billy, stop it!" Max and I were now screaming over each other trying to get him to slow down, but nothing was working. I then lean forward and moved Billy to the other side of the road.

Dustin, Mike, and Lucas all went to the side, I let out a sigh when we didn't hit them. "Yeah! That was a close one, huh?" Billy snapped at us and I lean back quickly into my seat. I turned around to make sure they were okay, Dustin was getting off the ground.

I looked over at Max, her mouth wide open. They definitely knew it was us.

-

It was 7.00 on the dot, Max and I were at Maple Street waiting to see the Ghostbusters. We decided we would come with them, only because we want the good candy bars. Just kidding.

All afternoon we felt bad for almost killing them. So we decided to go trick-or-treating with them and hopefully apologise for our step-brother's stupid act.

"There they are," Max draws me out of my thoughts and I spot the four Ghostbusters. They must be getting sick of wearing that thing. Everyone around us was dressed up in including Max, with a scary ass mask.

I was dressed up as a witch.

Max and I quickly ran over to them and jumped in their face, letting out a cry and they all screamed. I chuckle. Their faces were priceless.

"Holy shit! You should've seen your guys faces!" I chuckle. "And you? Who screams like that? You sound like a little girl."

We chuckle and Max rips off her mask and we walked on ahead. Max turned around to see them not following.

"Hey, you guys coming or not? Oh, I heard we should hit up Loch Nora." Max grinned. "That's where the rich people live, right?"

-

"Another full-size. Like seriously, rich people are such suckers." Dustin laughed as we left another rich person's home. "Wait. You guys aren't rich, right?"

"No, we live up Old Cherry Road." I tell him.

"Oh," Dustin muttered.

"No, it's fine." I shrugged. "I mean, the street's good for skating."

"Yeah, totally, tubular." I looked behind me and saw that Max was with Lucas, talking about whatever. "What? Did I say that right? Or is it, like, tubular."

Lucas came up to us. "It's like, totally, tubular." Lucas mocked in a surfer's dude voice.

"Totally tubular!"

"What a gnarly wave, dude!" Lucas laughs. They continue to say it in different ways, making us smile and I shake my head.

"Stop!" I laugh. "My ears are hurting."

I looked behind us and saw that Mike and Will were behind us, Will with a camera, filming Mike saying something.

We continued to go around houses and we walked up to another house. "Trick or treat!" We all smile politely at the old couple.

They gave us gummy candy, which I personally hate and I chucked it in Max's bowl. "Yay! More for me!" Max grinned and we turned around, walking back down the driveway.

Mike then went running off somewhere, and I quickly followed him. "Mike?"

He turned his head to me. "Will's missing! We've got to find him!" He begins to panic and I followed him down some steps and at the end of the steps was Will, sitting on the ground.

"Will!" I yelled out and tried to run past Mike but he wouldn't let me, the others were following us quickly.

"Holy shit!" Dustin cried out and we all ran towards him.

"Is he okay?" Lucas asked worriedly and Mike was bent down to Will, Max stood beside me giving me a worried look.

"I don't know," Mike panics. Will looked like he wanted to cry, he lets out a few whimpers. "I'm going to get you home, okay? I'm going to get you home. Hold on."

"All right, take it easy," Lucas tells Mike as he pulled up Will.

"I've got him," Mike snapped.

"Mike?" Dustin questioned softly.

"Keep trick-or-treating." Mike huffed. "I'm bored anyways." He then walked away from us and the four of us gave each other look.

"What's wrong with him?" I asked, looking at Dustin and Lucas but they didn't answer.
